Subject: 'I have candles lily white...' From: Branwen23 Date: 31 Aug 00 - 09:58 PM Looking for the full lyrics and tune for this song... I've heard it done very nicely with several parts... starts like this: I have candles lily white, hanging high, hanging high. I have candles lily white, hanging high. I have candles lily white, And I stole them all by night. But my life shall pay for all, when I die, when I die. But my life shall pay for all, when I die. There are several other verses... but I can only remember bits and pieces.... The way I heard this done, it was almost like a madrigal, but the tune is not slow like most madrigals... kind of confusing, I know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.... -Branwen- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'I have candles lily white...' From: Branwen23 Date: 31 Aug 00 - 10:07 PM I just saw that... It's very similar, but the version I heard is different in several places... I think I'll wait and see if anyone has the same lyrics with which I'm familiar... -Branwen- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'I have candles lily white...' From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 31 Aug 00 - 11:04 PM Or, indeed, Admiral Benbow, Admiral Benbow (2), Aikendrum, Captain Robert Kidd Captain Kidd, Sam Hall, Samuel Small, Van Gogh ...oh, and Wondrous Love...one of those tune-families where all the members are, as Marjorie Allingham once said in a completely different context, "aggressively legitimate". Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'I have candles lily white...' From: Anglo Date: 01 Sep 00 - 12:53 AM It could be all those, but it's not. It's a variant of Sam Hall, but I don't remember it well enough to write the tune. I believe it might have been published in an old issue (70's ?) of English Dance and Song. but I don't have it. SOrry not to be of more help. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'I have candles lily white...' From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Sep 00 - 04:38 AM We've been having a number of technical problems while Max has been tweaking things over the last few weeks. Not to worry. He'll have it fixed soon. In the meantime, send me a personal message if there's a song you need that you can't get, and I'll send it right off to you. Better yet, you could download the database and have your own copy. It's in the links in the blue DigiTrad search box. -Joe Offer- |
