Subject: Over the hill - officially From: Jim the Bart Date: 01 Sep 00 - 12:03 PM Tomorrow my personal odometer (or should that be "odd meter") clicks over to 50 and I will be spending the day celebrating with friends and family. This past year has been filled with uproar and upheaval. I just wanted to say "Thank You" to all at the Mudcat for keeping me vastly amused, variously stimulated and mostly sane for the past six months or so. Thanks particularly to Max and Joe Offer and everyone else responsible for keeping this remarkable place going. I truly wish you could all come by to sit'n pick awhile and generally share my joy. Thank God I finally have the first 50 years behind me. Now I can get on with the rest of this little adventure. See ya'll on the other side Jim Bartholomew |

Subject: RE: BS: Over the hill - officially From: Art Thieme Date: 01 Sep 00 - 01:42 PM I've found, as Spaw noted, that almost checking out DOES truly zero one in on what's important. Next year I hit 60. Yeah, the old proverbial glass is more than half full. And the panorama is as beautiful as it was at 20---even better. This weekend Carol and I are heading back to the Mississippi River to celebrate our son, Chris's, and his wife, Shannon's, first anniversary. Chris was cook and deckhand and mate on the boat while I was the folksinger/tale teller there for a decade---his school break summer job. What a treat it was to work with him the way it was in the old days when kids and dads worked and mentored together--before it became natural to just take off for work and never see the family again until evening when everyone was too exhausted to relate. Your good thread here has opened a floodgate for me or so it seems. Thanks. Jim, ENJOY !!! Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: BS: Over the hill - officially From: SINSULL Date: 01 Sep 00 - 01:42 PM Congratulations! And welcome. I loved turning fifty. Can do all sorts of things in public that are impossible for a woman under fifty. But you have me confused. Weren't you in a bidding war with Mbo over my niece? You can't start being an old fool until you're sixty, so watch it. Mary |
Subject: RE: BS: Over the hill - officially From: Mbo Date: 01 Sep 00 - 01:48 PM Naw Mary, you're thinking of Benjamin. BTW I haven't struck out, have I? --Matt (29 years before he's 50) |

I can wear my pants up under my armpits, belch and fart in public, and gripe about "the younger generation". It doesn't get any better than this :) |
Subject: RE: BS: Over the hill - officially From: dick greenhaus Date: 01 Sep 00 - 03:38 PM I remember 50.....vaguely. As for being over the hill, it beats the hell out of being under it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Over the hill - officially From: annamill Date: 01 Sep 00 - 03:44 PM Yeah, Dick. When I told my ex-husband I didn't want to get old, he'd say 'Think of the alternative'. Love, annamill |

See you in the day room. (Does anyone remember what thread that birthday song to the tune of the Song of the Volga Boatmen was on? I love that and haven't been able to find it ...) Subject: RE: BS: Over the hill - officially From: Jim the Bart Date: 02 Sep 00 - 10:48 AM Thanks to you all. It's still early, but the revels began last night. Yeesh, this may be more fun than even I thought. If I survive it, it will surely make me better. Amergin, the picture isn't quite right; thanks to my Mom's dad (the direction from the hair follicle gene comes, or so I've been told) I should at least keep my hair. By the way, I have discovered one thing about visibly aging - it seems to happen most during those brief period when I have "retired" from playing music. I'm convinced that music is the fountain of youth. Thanks, once again, to everyone at get my room ready at the House of the Setting Sun. I'll see you all there at the end of the next 50. |
Subject: RE: BS: Over the hill - officially From: Big Mick Date: 02 Sep 00 - 11:28 AM Hey Jim............get the party warmed up, willya?
