Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Gervase Date: 04 Sep 00 - 01:06 PM ...and why Christmas so early? The Christmas cake hasn't drunk nearly enough brandy... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Alice Date: 04 Sep 00 - 03:10 PM Well, when I go the email with the photos I asked Patrish to provide names because I had the same questions. When she gets back onto Mudcat, I think we will hear .... the rest of the story.... and *ahem* who is the lady lifting her dress up to show her panties? hmmmm? Alice |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Pene Azul Date: 04 Sep 00 - 03:46 PM I just downloaded them. I'll add them to the pages when I get the info. Jeff |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Mrs.Duck Date: 04 Sep 00 - 04:51 PM We had Christmas mainly because we never actually see one another then and never get the chance to hear all the seasonal songs especially the South Riding carols. I'll leave Patrish to put names to the faces some of whom are mudcatters others part of a crowd who meet fairly regularly at varioous folk venues and tend to occupy the Tap and Spile during Whitby folk week. There should be some more photos shortly from magician but he has been poorly (all say aah!) but promised or rather threatened that he would sort them out soon. I'm not sure how much it's worth to keep him from publishing my pose from the tarts and vicars night!!! |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Alice Date: 04 Sep 00 - 07:33 PM Mrs. Duck, Could you please explain what a Tarts and Vicars night is? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Patrish(inactive) Date: 05 Sep 00 - 05:22 AM The first Pic shows a group of us after the BBQ on wednesday: Dave, Les,?, Paddy, Steve, Jim McDonald, Jonny Booker, Bev(in the middle), Maggie(showing more then she bargained), and lying down with a glass of wine all over her Sherry -the landlady of the tap and spile.
The next Clacker photo shows me playing my christmas present - a pair of clackers and maggie, les and Mrs Duck watching. as you can see playing with clackers can be quite dangerous
The next shows Dave, Edna, Me, Rob, Maggie and Mrs Duck
The next shos my mates Maggie and Les playing at the christmas do
The next is me and Billy Mac at the BBQ the next three are party photos from Christmas night I think that one of them shows the mummer play we did.
Then there is the Vicar and Tarts party. From the back Dave, Rob, Jim(Father Jack), Paul, Edna, Pat,Trish, Fritz, next row Jude, Ken(Desmond Tutu) and Me.
I hope this helps identify people, but as you can see a great time was had by all.

Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Alice Date: 05 Sep 00 - 10:56 AM Well, Patrish, I'm still not sure if I understand - religious vicars? and tarts - the pastries, or the floozies?
What are the South Riding carols? I'm thinking now about what to perform at Christmas this year, so I'm seriously interested in learning some new (to me) songs. Alice |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Patrish(inactive) Date: 05 Sep 00 - 11:04 AM Alice, I will do some research and see if I can find some info - there is a song book available, but again I will do a bit of looking about - ok Patrish |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Patrish(inactive) Date: 05 Sep 00 - 11:59 AM http://www.villagecarols.co.uk/ Sorry its not a blue whatsit, but I think this has some info on the carols. If you e-mail me your address I will try and copy some of the songs we sang onto cassette and send them. Unfortunately you would probably need the words as the recording is poor Patrish |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Jed at Work Date: 05 Sep 00 - 12:00 PM Great pics from a fine looking group! Looks like lots of fun. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: GUEST,Ickle Dorritt cookieless again Date: 05 Sep 00 - 06:27 PM great photos Patrish -and all those familiar faces! Had tea with Maggie and Les at Hull shanty Festival over the weekend and shared a few songs. On your santa photo in the right hand foreground is my mate Roger who is a regular at nellies and the Tap & spile in Beverley. Didn't make it to Whitby and have been sulking ever since -Was that really Jim McDonald dressed as a vicar???? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Patrish(inactive) Date: 06 Sep 00 - 04:29 AM Indeed it was, as Father Jack from the "Father Ted" series, he even had a empty bottle of Irish Whiskey that he pretended to drink from through the night. He was heard to shout "Drink" and "Feck" and "Arse" several times. But it was a bit embarrassing walking through the streets with him. I was dressed quite tarty and was wearing stockings with a very short skirt and I couldn't keep the skirt down to hide the stocking tops. But to have someone dressed as a vicar next to you shouting arse.....well...... Paul wore a dog collar and his partner Pat led him through the streets of Whitby on a lead, she was following Ken (desmond Tutu) - it was an unusual parade, but loads of fun Patrish |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: GUEST,Michael in Swansea Date: 06 Sep 00 - 09:24 AM What a pleasant surprise seeing pics of my fiends Maggie et al. After 7 visits to Hull shanty fest I was unable to go this year due to a booking in Scarborough. Hope to catch Maggie at Whitby shanty fest in October though. M |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Alice Date: 06 Sep 00 - 12:18 PM Ok, Patrish, from your description of dress and behavior I am starting to get an answer to my question of " religious vicars? and tarts - the pastries, or the floozies?"
I don't know how many Americans have ever heard of a Vicars and Tarts party, but it is a new one for me. I really had no idea what you were talking about when you said it was a party for vicars and tarts. And what are vicar and tart related songs? Can you give us some examples?
How did the idea for such a party first begin? Is this party theme something new, or is there a history to it? Alice |

Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Patrish(inactive) Date: 07 Sep 00 - 04:31 AM Alice, here are some of the songs we sang: I am a tolerant man Parson and Clerk Polly on the Shore Begatting farmer Rolling Drunk Its great being a vicar A poor young maid of 17 I am And generally any nobbing songs. there is quite a tradition here of themed parties where people dress up Vicars and Tarts being only one. I dont think it is used for many singarounds though. Patrish |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: GUEST,Tony Date: 07 Sep 00 - 11:15 AM Wish I'd been there |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Patrish(inactive) Date: 07 Sep 00 - 11:30 AM Well I was there and I wish I could have bottled the feeling, the moment. If you are not there next year - its your loss. Patrish |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Les from Hull Date: 11 Sep 00 - 02:04 PM I imagine that some of the usual suspects will be at Whitby again at New Year doing the same sort of thing (again!) Big thanks to Pat for posting these photos. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Alice Date: 11 Sep 00 - 02:39 PM I'm afraid to ask, but.. nobbing songs are....? |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: GUEST,Ickle Dorritt cookieless again Date: 11 Sep 00 - 03:15 PM Patrish, nobbing songs -marvellous description! Alice, think fornication ....... |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Les from Hull Date: 11 Sep 00 - 04:53 PM We also have non-nobbing songs and songs of unrequited nobbing. It's not all nobbing you know. I know, I was there - except I can't remember much. |
Subject: RE: Mudcat Photos From Patrish From: Patrish(inactive) Date: 12 Sep 00 - 04:40 AM Hi Les, the reason I took the photos was as a visual reminder as I cant remember much either. But I must have been there cos I'm in the pictures. As to nobbing, I think mine was mostly unrequited - aaahhhhh.......
I posted the pictures to Alice, who cleaned them up and posted them to Pene Azul, who posted them here. I'd like to say thanks.
As to the term "nobbing songs" I'd like to take credit for such a wholesome expression, but alas.......not me. |
