Subject: Hidden Residence Songs From: lloyd64 Date: 04 Sep 00 - 07:10 PM Underground Music During WWII the occupied countries had residence songs that had hidden meanings. I only know one, it's about the UM-PA-PA band that marched into Denmark, and how no one like the band so they waited for the day when they could send the band marching back home. I'm sure there are others. Maybe other times in history people had hidden residence songs. Can anyone help?

Subject: RE: Hidden Residence Songs From: Helen Date: 05 Sep 00 - 06:01 PM I think there are a lot of Irish songs like that. I'm not sure but I think Roisin Dhu/Black Rose is one of them, where the rose is used to refer to Ireland. I also think that Four Green Fields might be one too. There will be Mudcats who know more about it than me. I'm not a singer so I don't know the words of songs very well. Helen |

Subject: RE: Hidden Residence Songs From: Sorcha Date: 05 Sep 00 - 06:24 PM Would "Follow the Drinking Gourd" fit in this category? Or "Jimmy Crack Corn"? And, surely, there are Bonnie Prince Charlie songs like this. What about the fiddle tune, "White Cockade"? |
