Do you think that a musician's appearance has much of a bearing on their chances of success in the music world?

Marion

PS If anyone's wondering about the "tits book bands" quote, it's from the movie Fame.

Merv Griffin was wildly popular as a performer in his time, but his face was rarely ever seen. In the video for "Run Around", Blues Traveler's very first song, the band was shown only for a few seconds...I guess lead singer John Popper though that if the kids all saw a 300lb man with a harmonica, they might think it uncool..but they slowly became more visible and became more possible, and suddenly it was real people making music, not just skinny pretty-boys.

Miles Davis used to play with his back to the audience, being quite stubborn about not being there to be looked at, but to be listened to.

Unfortunately, that was over 20 years ago. Music is all about sponsorship these days, and you need models to wear the right clothes and sell the right soft drinks.

You might make a living, but you're not going to be Bono unless you look like Britney. (you may find that last sentence strange, and thats because it is. You get my drift though I hope)

Well I'd like to say no but in all honesty, if I was booking a band, all other things being equal, a good looking female band member would encourage me to book them. I wonder how many of us can honestly say that we are not influenced to some degree or other on the subject of looks and physical attraction. I suspect that even though many people will argue that they are not, it is pretty well impossible for most of us to be completely impartial.

There was this cool movie..can't remember the name..anyway, it was about these 4 girls who had a punk band, and used their looks and slutty clothes to get booked, then they'd go onstage and sing THEIR kind of music, sortoff a reflective hard edged singer songwriter style. But they start off every concert by raising their fists in the air and screaming "WE DON'T PUT OUT!!!" That was so cool! Tits may book bands, but it may have nothing to do with your style of music.

My last "online" girlfriend told me she had had two breast reduction operations and still was not happy. I asked her why she just didn't have them both done at the same time. I never heard from her again. She liked "Backstreet Boys" and progressive blugrass. Was that a loss? Hmmm?

I think so, but maybe I'm just a disgruntled homely girl. I got ousted by a tall, winsome strawberry blonde who didn't know old-time guitar backup from a hole in her head.

I suppose I must favor a certain look in guy musicians, too, but I think I'm inclined to find them considerably more attractive once they prove they can play.

Aw, Ely, don't say you're homely. Beauty is subjective. And there's a lot more to being beautiful than physical appearance. From what I've heard, you are beautiful, and I don't think a visual image of you would change than. Sigh...If we could all be judged by things other than looks...

This thread seems to be about 2 related, but different subjects. Does sexuality book bands (Britney, Spice Girls) and does appearence, in general book bands, (Merv Griffin, Miles Davis).

IMHO I'd have to say that sexuality does play more of role than simple appearence. Whether it actually gets you in the door or keeps you out is another issue. I know of people who are contemptuous of Kathryn Tyckell's publicity photo -- the one of her in the leather jacket with the rather sultry/bewildered look on her face: I know others who more-or-less salivate.

As for appearence in general, I remember a friend of mine commenting how Garth Brooks didn't look like a CW singer; short, and kinda chunky. I'm looking at a picture of Kate Rusby on Hourglass and she's not what I'd call "stunning"; attractive, certainly. Of course, what ultimately grabbed my attention was the stunning musical and performance talent all of the above -- Tyckell, Brooks and Rusby -- display. Is it perhaps more accurate that appearence, and for that matter sexuality, counts more towards starting out than it does in continuing a career?

Dunno 'bout the question of do "tits book bands", but I know they're good for collecting money in the tip jar! We openly exploit our busty singer (since she doesn't play an instrument) and send her around with the tip jar as the rest of us rip into a jig or reel. Works for us!

Not the genre we generally discuss on the Mudcat, but I think it is interesting what happened to the rock band Heart when their lead singer (Ann Wilson) put on weight. In my opinion she had perhaps the best female rock voice ever -- I can't think of any other woman in rock who had or has the emotional range and power of Ann Wilson. But when she stopped being so damn attractive to the male audience members, the band plummeted.

This may be true to a lesser extent in folk and acoustic music, but it's still a factor, in my opinion. Guys have it easier, as there is somewhat less attention paid to their looks generally, and popular culture accepts a number of different male types as being attractive. But unfortunately, when it comes to commercial success, looks are a factor.

It'll certainly have a bearing on success in the Top Ten, MTV, pop world. Appearance is everything, as every manufactured boy- or girl-band shows - good looks are much more important than being able to sing, cos all the shows are just miming, songs are written by other ppl, and the producer can make anyone sound good (doubt _that_, and think of Shane McGowen who's got no more voice than a creaky door).

But whether you succeed in _music_ is a different thing altogether...

I just got back from a festival that was split most decidedly in half. The Yuppie types that were down for the weekend tended to hang around the willowy ToriAmos wannabe stages, while the rest of the crowd hung around stages featuring pepperpot schoolteachers with autoharps. Depends on what you are looking for I guess. If you go to see tits or hear great music. Personally I am a great fan of those non-angst ridden folks who are comfortable with who they are.

Got me a big footed woman
I'm a big-footed woman's man
She stands so solid, stands so strong
Because her tootsies are two feet long
Ya know a big-footed woman
Won't ever sing the blues
If ya wanna love me, honey can't you see
You gots ta wear big shoes

Well, this is an interesting discussion. I think it just depends on several factors, namely what kind of music you are playing and what type of venue is involved. I said to Mister once, that one of the things I liked about the bluegrass and folk markets is that they are based more on sheer talent than, as Travis Tritt once said, an ass-wiggling contest.

People who sell records because of their looks will not continue to sell records over an extended period of time, because they are not serious musicians with good, sturdy songs. People who sell records because of their talent will generally do so much longer.

Someone mentioned Ann Wilson - now, I was never a huge Heart fan, but it seems to me that their record sales dropped off because their sound had mellowed out quite a bit, and not necessarily because Ann put on weight. But it could have been a combination of both, I suppose.

How many records has Aretha Franklin sold during her career?

I'm not a professional performer, but my experience in life has been that while the "tits factor" may open certain kinds of doors for you, it can make it very difficult to be taken seriously.

I'll never forget the time my son was marching as a Cub Scout in a Memorial Day parade, and an antique car full of antique veterans started hooting and shouting suggestive remarks at me while I was standing by the side of the road, watching the parade. My son was there, for Pete's sake. And I wasn't dressed suggestively at all. Women tend to take you less seriously as well.

Hey Guinnesschik, you should ask your singer if she gets more tips on the fertile days of her cycle. Apparently there's been a study showing that waitresses get more tips when they're fertile - something about the pheromones that accompany ovulation.

Here in Cape Breton, there are many accomplished traditional fiddlers, and fiddle connoisseurs have a variety of favourite performers. But there are two who really stand as having achieved mass popularity: Natalie McMaster, who is young, beautiful, and female, and Ashley MacIsaac, who is young and has established a "badass" image.

Now it's possible that these two also happen to be the best two fiddlers on Cape Breton - I'm not enough of a connoisseur to tell the difference between a good fiddler and a great one. But I have a feeling that the vast majority of their fan base aren't connoisseurs either, and wouldn't be able to recognize Natalie's or Ashley's playing by the sound alone.

Marion: I really don't know about our singer, but as fiddler and singer, I give a kick-ass performance on such days. If I'm not performing, life just seems to be a bit easier at that time. However that should really be a seperate thread.

However, her "girls" always look cute and young, and there's always a fair share of leches in the audience. I'm currently writing a parody of "Dirty Old Town." Gonna call it "Dirty Old Men."

I'd like to think I wouldn't book an act based on looks. I'm certain I haven't made any choices along those lines yet but being a guy and knowing my weaknesses I'd hate to be put on the spot.

If you look at the entertainment industry as a whole it's easy to see that sexy looks will prevail. Our little corner of the entertainment world cannot be totally immune. But I like to think our corner is more enlightened and that when the choice comes along we are at least able to question our choices and make the right ones sometimes.

Oh,look sells.I have a couple of examples, but it's a personal opinion and some mudcatters love the gals I would quotate...Look does sell.how many performers change their shirt before coming on stage?!But we should make a distinction between clothing/tits and real glamour. Now,glamour sells .Not sex.Sex doesn't charm as much as a glamourous female performer. And male performers as well....Although I must say that if I see a folk musician jump up on stage wrapped in a particular fashon I scratch my head and think...so what, mate?!

Blind Desert Pete, unfortunately you've come up with the best example of yes they do. How a no talent tramp like Madonna can appeal to anyone on a musical level is beyond me, and probably beyond her, but she knew that if she did a strip show and sang at the same time it would sell. The only thing missing from her stage show is the metal pole.

Here's my take.

Tits don't book bands, club managers book bands.

Club managers book bands in order to get people to come to the club, pay the cover charge, and buy food/drinks.

Thus, club managers will book whatever band they think will attract an audience.

If they think tits will attract an audience at their club, they will book tits. If they think ugly people doing fabulous music will attract an audience at their club, they will book ugly people doing fabulous music. And so forth.

It's really a measure of what the club managers think their potential patrons want to see/hear.

How to change it? Easy. Go to lots of shows with good music. Refuse to go to shows where the music is lousy but the singer is shapely. Club managers, being business people, will book what sells.

Naw...police book bands. Like the time Jim Morrison exposed himself to a large audience and got arrested for it. "Book 'em, Dan-o!" That's what the top cop said.

Absolutely, looks book bands in the mainstream music world (pop, rock, etc), especially in the big-time entertainment business, where dollars are much more important than the music. But in our wonderful, real world of folk, Celtic, old-time, etc., looks don't mean much. Folk musicians are real people and they look like real people, not like "made-up", created for a target audience, plastic people. We're always swimming upstream. I love it. Loretta Simonet

Looks must help at some point, case in point, the Corrs.
Tits I dont think influence people that much, case in point, the Corrs, those girls are so flat they are almost inverted. I am not just saying that, I have looked long and hard at many photos of them, I will continue to do so just in case I got it wrong.

Sledge--YEAH YEAH! Did I ever mention that their song "Closer" was the reason I wanted to write my own music. I wrote my first song about a week later.

There's a few things I find reassuring...

Scruggs has a big gap in his teeth ala Letterman. Dylan has a big nose that his voice goes through. Woody Guthrie was known to not bathe sometimes for quite a while on end.

do t*ts book bands? who cares when your idea of talent has much more to do with what comes out of your heart than out of your bra?

Just a reality check here - good looks are an advantage in ALL lines of endeavor, not just music. Sad but true, hardwired into our primitive brains, affected by advertising, but still something we all deal with.
