From: Fortunato
Date: 05 Sep 00 - 04:15 PM

I will be in London with my wife Susette Sept. 23 through the 29th. I am free to make music and socialize all those days except for the night of the 28th and the 25th. I hope to meet many of you. I plan to be at the Herga Folk Club on the 25th. There is an'An Open Evening'or Singers Night', at 'The Royal Oak', Peel Road, Wealdstone, Middlesex. Can anyone make it? If not please suggest alternatives as well! I just ordered my Travel Card so I've got the fare to travel all week, and I'm game for anything. I won't have a guitar, but we will have Susette's autoharp. We'll sing you an Appalachian tune. I'd love to meet you all. Please join us if you can. Regards, Fortunato (Chance Shiver)

Great Liz, they've said they'll let me borrow a guitar out there, so I'll be in business. We'll do some Carter Family tunes, and the obligatory Doc Watson tune or two if opportunity permits. I'm excited!

Can't wait to tip a pint o' Guiness out there with you.

Wow, never been to the end of the Bakerloo Line before - but I'll make the epic trek on the 25th. See you there.

Will you be delivering that ditty up at Herga with us, Shambles? And tell me now, do you think the beer is any good at all up at the Royal Oak?

Were no the 'Bakeroos', Buck Owens backing band?

I may be able to get there, I will try.

Not too sure about the beer, but after the first three pints, you won't notice if it's rubbish.

Maybe the song is best written after the ride on the 'Trains of Bakerloo?

Buck Owens and the Bakeroo's? Dressed in white aprons and chef's hats?

Didn't the Bakeroo's have a guy with a steam powered banjo?

hope to see you at Herga!

For the pleasure of meeting you, Fortunato, I will brave the M11 and the A406 on the 25th (the Tube only goes as far out as Epping). Haven't been to Herga in years.

You can borrow my guitar, if all else fails.

Lanfranc! Fantastic. It will be lovely to meet you as well. And thanks much for the offer of the guitar, I'll have my picks and capo and tuner and A LOT of motivation.

Susette and I were in our local, The Royal Mile, last night sipping Newcastle and planning a few songs. We'll stick to Shenadoah Valley tunes (my ancestral home) I think, the dearest to my heart.

I'm getting really excited.

Londoners, Help! I got these directions to Herga from the tube station, but I don't quite get them. Can anyone translate this into 'pig farmer' American? To whit: From the station entrance turn left to a roundabout approx. 25yds away. Turn right at the roundabout and walk the 50 yards to a main road. This is a dual carriage way and you turn left as you reach it and you will come to a large roundabout. It is sensible to cross the road here but carry on the same way for about a 100 yards. Peel Road is on the right and, although there is no vehicular access from the dual carriageway, I believe there is pedestrian access.

"Dual Carriageway?" regards, Fortunato

Hi Fortunato, Dual Carriageway - H-hm well. A rough translation would be two lanes of traffic going in approximately one direction and another two lanes of traffic going in approximately the opposite direction. These four lanes of traffic are often (but not always) seperated by a central reservation. I'm not in London area otherwise I'd join you, but I hope you and your good lady have a fantastic time.

All the best

Nynia

I would guess it means that there is a crossing there, but stay on the same side when you get over the crossing?? Wish I could be there but it's a school night (sic) unfortunately.

With a little luck I'll have had chance to top up with petrol before the 25th! If you have any spare time we could meet - I'm in the City (of London) most days, and my office is close to London Bridge. You would also be welcome to visit Francis Towers, our palatial hovel on the fringes of Harlow (40 minutes by train from London). PM or email alan@fits.freeserve.co.uk.

This should be a map

And in case the blue clicky doesn'tt work, here it is again:

I keep meaning to get to the Herga, maybe this will get hyped up to get over there. Here is a link to their website - I see it's an open evening on 25th, which is handy.

I hope you can make it McGrath. Susette and I are looking forward to meeting you all. Herga knows we're coming. Thanks for the maps and stuff!

It seems quite a genuine way to come to know a bit of London to have those of you who can come and sing with us. I'm very grateful to Mudcat and you all for the promise and richness of the experience. I excited. All the best, McGrath, I hope to see you there. We'll sing you a song from my family's home in Honeyville, Virgina, in the Shenandoah Valley. Or two if there's time!

All the best, Fortunato/Chance Shiver

Liz; Gervase; LanFranc; McGrath; et al.

Lord willing and the creek don't rise, Susette and I will see you at Herga Monday night, the 25th.

You'll know me by my big grin.

Also neither Susette nor I have facial hair.

We'll raise a ruckus.

Great Expectations, Fortunato/Chance Shiver

IT WAS GRAND! susette and I found our way to Herga and were received like family. Johnny Collins and his wife Nancy took us in, brought me a guitar and soothed our nerves. Johnny had visited my open mike some years ago in DC and it was great to see him again. Best of all Micca came and became an immediate great friend. He sang two lovely songs he had written.

Then on Thursday Gervaise and Micca met us for lunch and we had so much fun we passed the afternoon in the Hoop and Toy and finally went on to dinner, wonderful people and great fun. Sorry many of you couldn't be there, you'll just have to come and see us! regards, Chance

Hope you had a great time and I'm holding the snog in readiness..... Gervase, you and I need words......

Well Liz, it would only have been fair for me to receive a snog from you since Susette got kissed and hugged by Micca and Gervase and Johnny and more I can't remember. Next time my dear. here's a virtual hug.

Sorry I missed it, too, but the timing was unfortunate and hit a week from hell for me as far as work was concerned.

I'm glad my email to Herga possibly helped to make up for my inability to make good on my offer of a loan guitar, and that Micca, at least, made it over. The Hoop and Toy session was just too far away to get there and back in my lunch hour. Excuses, excuses - maybe next time!

Or maybe I'll give up trying to achieve the impossible for the ungrateful and take an extended holiday in the US and visit DC. Glad you had a good trip Fortunato and Susette. You were at least spared my rendition of the Roy Orbison song dedicated to one of Susette's namesakes, which would have snuck out unbidden after a quantity of alcohol.

Thanks, Lanfranc, yes Johnny Collins marched in with a guitar and after we sorted out who we were and when we'd seen each other last it was like 'old home week'.

Please come to see us in the DC, we're big Roy Orbison fans, and the alcohol will be provided I promise you. Next time, my friend.
