Can you really count Ringo? I mean, is the word "singing" to be used in ita loosest sense...? Or am I being to harsh on the wonder that is "Octopus' Garden"?

There often seems to be a mike in front of the drummer to do backing vocals. Lead vocals are more difficult to think of, as you say.

Grab.

I don't remember the names of the singers but two bands that had singing drummers were "Rare Earth" and "The Mojo Men". Both active in the late 60's or early 70's. Shelia E { for Escavido } also comes to mind.

Rana, I seem to remember that the organist for the DC 5, Mike somebody or other, did most of the lead singing. The drummer for the Gin Blossoms sang a lot of backup and occasionally lead.

If you move away from the drum set and talk about precussionists it opens up the whole world of latin music - Dezi Arnez, Tito Puente, ect.

Technically all drummers are percussionists but all percussionists are not drummers (so percussion is the overarching term). There appears to be less stigma attached to percussionists. There is an exception.

Multi-percussionists (eg: of classical, latin, Pink Floyd nature) as against single instrument percussionists (Bodhran, Djembe) tend to be stigmatised at festivals.

People hear with their eyes. Percussion is perceived to be loud. This is a stereotype. Percussion is the most dynamic instrument. Some players utilise the loud end too much.

Which gets me back to multi-percussionists (eg:drummers) and singing(or didge playing). Drummers who play and sing need to focus on their dynamics more. This is the case with didge as well.

This situation is even more pronounced in an acoustic setup. It is possible to play a drumkit/multi-percussion and sing at an acoustic level and have the vocals (or didge) be audible and intelligible.

Singing drummers, or didge playing drummers are rare because of the reluctance of most players to use the full range of dynamics on their percussion instruments.

Thus the "bad" name of drummers and the novelty of drummers who sing.

Has anyone heard anything else on Levon Helm and how he's doing? I know he's quit singing altogether but I haven't heard a recent prognosis or update.

Yeah Brendy, I knew he was still having a great time with the blues group (Barnburners), but I caught something on the news a few weeks ago about additional treatments or something. But thanks for the schedule....None too close to me, but Meebo ought to try to catch him. I haven't heard them but they're getting pretty good reviews.

Honey, of HOney and the HOneycombs.

Incidentally from a soundman point of view I HATE singing drummers because it is so hard to get them a monitor where they can hear it so that they can sing in tune without inducing screaming feedback!
