Subject: David Massengill on WFDU's TRADITIONS From: GUEST,Ron Olesko Date: 06 Sep 00 - 10:47 AM David Massengill, one of the most respected songwriters to come out of the NYC folk scene of the 1980's, visits with Ron Olesko this Sunday (9/10) on WFDU-FM's TRADITIONS. Subject: RE: David Massengill on WFDU's TRADITIONS From: GUEST,Ron Olesko Date: 07 Sep 00 - 09:46 AM David is the type of guy you say hello to and then sit back and let him talk! He shared some wonderful stories and his new songs are incredible! He is working on a new CD which will hopefully be out next spring. He has gone into his personal history to come up with some songs that are very moving and also finds a universal element that we can all relate to. He performs a couple of these songs on the show this Sunday. I predict that when this new CD comes out - David will become the most wanted performer at folk festivals around the nation. Of course when I saw him nearly 20 years ago at Speakeasy I thought that any moment he was going to become the next big media darling. Of course his songs have become part of the folk fabric of the last two decades, but he never really achieved the status that he deserved. He is a wonderful performer to watch! Okay, enough of my soapbox! I think the guy is great! I hope some people will tune in this Sunday, or go to see him at the Hurdy-Gurdy Coffeehouse in Paramus on 9/16! |
Subject: RE: David Massengill on WFDU's TRADITIONS From: Stewie Date: 08 Sep 00 - 04:36 AM I reckon he is great too but, being in Oz, I've never had a chance to see him live. 'My Name Joe', 'Fairfax County' etc are great songs, but the one that always sticks in my mind is 'Contrary Mary' - deliciously deranged:

Subject: RE: David Massengill on WFDU's TRADITIONS From: Bugsy Date: 08 Sep 00 - 04:42 AM I like his work a lot too, though I seem to be the only one in my vacinity who has heard of him. His music gets good airtime on my radio show. Cheers Bugsy |
Subject: RE: David Massengill on WFDU's TRADITIONS From: GUEST Date: 08 Sep 00 - 04:00 PM I'm glad to hear you are playing him Bugsy! It has always amazed me that this guy isn't more popular. Most "casual" folk fans have heard a song or two by David but don't seem to recognize him! During the 80's when the "mini-folk boom" hit the NYC area, the record companies seemed to quickly grab the female songwriters - Suzanne Vega and Shawn Colvin most notably. For some reason artists like Massengill, Rod MacDonald, and Jack Hardy developed a respectful cult status but never made it to the mainstream. Of course if I could understand public taste, I probably wouldn't be doing a folk show!! |
