Subject: RE: Mudcats gather in San Francisco From: Peter Kasin Date: 16 Sep 00 - 01:12 AM It's at 51 Embarcadero Cove, on the waterfront, about a half-mile South of Jack London Square and nextdoor to Commodore Yachts. It's in a converted turn of the Century lighthouse, and the band plays in the upstairs bar and lounge. It's a very fun time. I played in the band for two years before I got the Park job, and it was a gas. Winters Wages used to come to our then other regular gig in S.F. on Tuesday nights as a listener, and was later invited into the band. He's a fine fellow and melodeon player/singer, and you will have a great time if you go see them. |

Having such a talented pool of musicians around makes my happy job alot easier. I was running around most of the time, but I did get to see a little bit of the drinking songs workshop, and it had the biggest audience of the BALCLUTHA workshops all weekend. I mean, there were alot of beer bellies out there. Oak, Ash, and Thorn, radriano, and rIGGY did a great job by all accounts - no surprise there. I know they were practicing hard for the drinking songs, and rehearsing some songs as well. The four music volunteers included three mudcatters - Melani and daughter Sarah, and new mudcatter Elise. We'll work on the 4th; Charlie Fenton. He would make a great contribution to mudcat discussions. The music volunteers and the 100 or so volunteers at the many parts of this festival all did a tremendous job. It was great to meet Joe Offer, and to have this gathering within a festival with the mudcatters was hopefully the start of an annual event. Of course, Wyo, there'll be a sofa reserved for you next year. Anything to get you to sit on my lap again, darlin.' (see events page photo - at Pam and Dave Swan's, April, 2000)

Actually, Joe, for half a century I have sung that song just as most everybody has, as a rollicking party song. It was while I was waiting for Peter (chanteyranger) to look my way that I got the idea of singing it as it was no doubt intended by its author--it is, after all, one of the greatest disasters ever brought about by man's hubris--two thirds of the three thousand people aboard died because the captain was an arrogant ass, the poor (such poor as might have been on the Titanic--probably tourist class rather than steerage--were locked down below as passageways were locked to slow down the flooding of the ship--so I thought maybe once it could be sung in memoriam of those who died (and I didn't really stop the singing to enforce my vision--I merely called out "Somebody's rollicking" after the first chorus and heard Peter respond "But it's a funny song...." The song and my history with it kind of took over--the pace began to accelerate and after the fourth verse and chorus, I started another chorus, and it was all the way back to the wild version I grew up with. My mother, who was nine years old when "the good ship went down," hated the lighthearted version of it, having grown up with the disaster a large part of her consciousness, particularly since it happened only a few short years after she had come to the US from Belfast. But it was a great night, and I was sorry to have to leave with another hour and a half of music to go. What a wonderful place to sing that ship's hold is: the best accoustics I've ever experienced. --seed |

The only remotely sea-faring song I know is "The Last Leviathan," which is sure to put a damper on things. But I'm greatly enthusiastic on chorae, so I'll come be a hanger-on, rather than a devotee. The Starboard Watch (The little group I play music with) does this song every Thursday at L.J.Quinn's Lighthouse and Pub in Oakland. BSeed used to come and sit in and play his harmonica on several of the tunes. He played that banjo nicely the other night. Was also a pleasure to meet you in person Joe. Swano is right, you were sure bent on having a wonderful time. Also, yes, thanks to Melani and her daughter for all the work they did in helping to put this event on. He stopped a couple of times and chided us for singing in a "rousing" manner. It was really interesting to see what he did with the song. We lead a workshop where the point was to sing drinking songs! What a scam. We loved it. A big ol' chantey sing on the pier Saturday night ended the day's festivities with about ten of us stepping up to lead chanteys, one right after the other. Met the affable Joe Offer. A friendly guy, bent on having a good time. The night included a long session in the hold of C.A. Thayer, where none other than BSeed sprang up! I sat back to back with Winter's Wages, and every time one of us would head for a cheesy harmony, he'd find the other one already there. Lots of good laughs, lots of good songs. Ran into some old friends, had a great time, damaged a lot of single malt. Can't wait for next year. Thanks to Chanteyranger and all the folks at Hyde Street. Dave |

The version I sing is a compilation of Barry Finn's version and the versions found in Stan Hugill's "Shanties of the Seven Seas." If you search for "Roller Bowler" in the Forum threads you'll find Barry's version. It was posted earlier this year so you just have to filter for one year. For the chorus, Barry sings "Away you Roller Bowler" and I sing "Hooraw you Roller Bowler." I also shout out the "timme" in the chorus just because I don't get to yell enough in everyday life. Fantastic singing, incredible fiddling, ethnic dancing (the Polynesian dancers stole the show!), beautiful boats and ships everywhere, fresh salmon for sale off the boats that caught them that morning. All my favorite people--old friends, new friends--the chantey sing one of the best I can remember, beyond hilarious. Chanteyranger can undoubtedly describe it more eloquently--I am close to speechless. All I can say is, you guys better start planning now to be there next year! |

Mudcatters performing on Saturday will be Dave Swan and his Swanettes (Oak, Ash and Thorn), rIGGY, and radriano, all in a drinking songs workshop Saturday aboard the ship BALCLUTHA 1:30-2:20, p.j. drumming with the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers Saturday 10:30-11:00 am, 12:30-1:30, and 3:00-3:35 at three different locations on the site, and Winter's Wages may or may not be with Skip Henderson and the Starboard Watch 11:00-11:45 on the main stage, with his fluctuating work schedule. (415)556-6435 for the evening chantey sing, (reservations taken because of limited space aboard ship). Melani and Elise will be volunteering, and Joe Offer will be there, staying at radriano's place for the weekend. Plenty of jamming space both days, so fear not, BSeed (You're on the chantey sing gate list, Seed - see you there). There'll be 25 different acts with about 120 musicians and dancers total for the two days. Looking forward to seeing any mudcatters who can make it there. -chanteyranger |

I'll attend the festival on Saturday (chanteyranger, can you save me a ticket for Saturday night?), but on Sunday I will probably go to the Fiddlin' and Pickin' potluck in Berkeley--and suggest that it might be an even better place for Muddies to actually jam together than the festival will provide.
