Subject: How much time do you spend on Mudcat?
From: GUEST,Aaron
Date: 08 Sep 00 - 01:17 PM

I've lurked this forum for a while and love it. Because of various constraints upon my time, I am a bit selective about the threads I read and even more selective about those I contribute to. On the other hand, some mudcatters apparently have much more free time than me (I hesitate to say "too much"). Their pseudonyms and voluminous remarks appear on almost every thread. I am curious. How much time are we spending at Mudcat? My guestimate for myself is an average of 10 minutes/day. And yes, this is an impertinent question.

10 minutes??? I sign in at 8:15 AM and wander in and out all day long. Then I check in at night. I work at a computer terminal all day long making my frequent visits possible. I hyperventilate when Shorty gets an attitude and won't let me play.

As much as I can.

Of course, real life gets in the way from time to time. But real life is always getting in the way of things I would prefer to be doing. -- But these days my real life is a whole lot closer to allowing me the time to do those things.

Geez, that's a hard question. I pop in and read stuff several times a day, but I'm only really 'here' after 10pm. And even then, I'm off doing other things like eating, sleeping, reading, etc. Maybe I should set up a stopwatch?

Some days maybe as much as 3 hours. Other days an hour. Other days not at all (but that's rare). Too much sometimes, but at least I'm not watching television.

5-10 mn each visit, maybe 3-4 times a day from work (but I'll deny it); then maybe an hour (more if I get into hearme) most evenings, not all. But I tend to be connected to the internet for work reasons anyway, like now, so I slipped over since I hadn't been able to when I tried at lunch...

GOOD thread. I like this kind of stuff.

see the reply from Sinsull. (Why exert myself typing in essentially the same answer)

BUT....BUT not only is the time spent posting need to be taken into account, but the time spent reading, the time spent composing replies (not to mention the time spent tossing and turning at night waking up with "But I SHOULD have said" running through your mind) and the time spent surfing the web, rummaging thorugh books, hunting thorugh memories for the answers to the questions people ask. Not to mention the time spent traveling to socialize with mudcatters and the time spent on HearMe and the time spent memorizing songs to sing on HearMe and....

y'know, I should get a life....

Does your family accuse you of having invisible friends? When Mbo's and Kendall's tapes came with return addresses I paraded them around the house gleefully proving their existence.

Yeah, MM. Also the numerous times so many of you show up in my consciousness with no help from you yourselves. The ether gets more ethereal all the time. Also: if I'm on the 'Cat, am I outside my body, returning only for lav breaks? Question becomes, how long are you actually interacting with the "real" "page".Um, I don't know.Nice way to join in the great pan-celestial hum, though.

I can't answer just for my time on Mudcat, but between reading the seventy or so emails a day on Banjo-L and luxuriating in Mudcat I spend, surely, two hours a day. And then maybe twice a week I'll spend another two hours on HearMe. Really lucky I'm semiretired.

Far too much. I should be practising! I should be writing songs!

I'm sick a lot, and only have a part-time job in the 'real' world. Somehow, sitting at a computer for 8 - 10 hours per day isn't as tiring as washing dishes all weekend at work. And it's not as tiring as trying to play instruments when my lungs aren't working properly. Funny about that...

I'm on mudcat about three hours per day average. (I think.) More sometimes, sometimes less.

Although I have a tendency to pick up an instrument while I'm waiting for the goldarned page to load!

Guest Martin,
Check the shorty thread. He's a computer (server?), one of several that run the Cafe. When he dozes off, the site shuts down or sends out strange messages addressed from shorty. Max has been fine tuning shorty and luka (?) and the gang with mixed results. For reasons unknown shorty has taken to signing his name at the bottom of every thread. I guess he wants to be appreciated.

I think it would be easier to measure when I'm NOT on Mudcat. When you're doing work like drawings, it's a good friend to have with you. I'm on about 15 hours a day. It's also good to write songs, practice music, work on my take, homework, etc. while waiting for threads to update.

See if you can work in some time for some 3-D relationships Meebo....Like maybe taking a female friend out for a coke or something? Go play handball. Hang out somewhere for awhile and see who shows up. Go sit in the middle of campus and play guitar for awhile.

Life is short.

Spaw's right meebs....I guess you see me popping in and out pretty often, but in between times I've probably run around the streets for an hour or two or scooted somewhere and back on my bike

Oh, nearly forgot, I manage about four to five hours a day in here at the moment. That might reduce if I ever catch up with all that interests me.

Mbo, there is a young man in town here who may have had a lifestyle something like yours. What he did mostly was play fiddle; in social interaction he was fairly inarticulate and a bit inept (No offense, Mbo! That's where you're different). He's 21 now and a very talented young man, started out on the Suzuki method when he was 8 or 9. Irish music is/has been his main interest.

A couple of years ago a professor friend staked him to a visit to Ireland and the young man and his mother- a guitar player- traveled around Ireland for two months playing with everyone they met. When they returned to Alaska he was a different person. Now he carries his fiddle to the parks and to the waterfront and gets out his fiddle. People- especially young people- gather around and he has a wonderful time. His whole demeanor has lightened- and we're all happy for him. Still doesn't talk much though. *BG*

Hardly any time at all....well maybe occasionally....some days a little more....Oh, hell, I'm connected pretty much all day (work is connected to the internet), and then I come home to be sure I didn't miss anything. My wife hates it when I start laughing at my computer. Imagine what she thinks now that I sing to it. Went to a shrink the other day..he asked me to describe myself. My response: "I'm a mudcatter." Made perfect sense to me.

Like Amergin, maybe too much and not enough. I don't have as much energy as most people because of some physical problems that I experience. I would like to be able to get out and be among people more often. I'm missing a concert and jam session tonight because I did too much yesterday.

This site makes it possible for me to feel much less isolated than I used to. I like interacting with people, and sometimes this is the only way I can do it. It's certainly more socially interactive than television. And I'm learning quite a lot while making friends. And I love the fact that the friends I'm making live all over the world. What could be cooler than that?

I would say that 50 to 75 percent of the time I spend on the Mudcat is spent waiting for things to load. I have a very slow computer.

Best wishes,

Carol

I forgot to get back on track to the question.
I turn on the computer with my first cup of coffee and check out e-mail and Mudcat, opening as many threads as I have time for and that I think will be absorbing. That takes about an hour and a half...
At noon I check out e-mail and Mudcat- takes 20 minutes... After work I check on Mudcat. In the evening when I'm going somewhere with another 'Catter, we discuss the current threads... Rarely do I not check the 'Cat when I get home, even if it's midnight...This is getting ridiculous! But I can stop, I just don' wanna yet.

Mbo - If I was in your neck of the woods, I would be your friend. Damn straight. I've got friends of all ages. My advice is do what Spaw is telling you and go sit outside on the campus and play your guitar and harmonica. You will soon meet others with similar interests, and similar interests are a great foundation for friendship. Find the local folkies (or whoever) and play music with them. The vast majority of my friends have come to me through the Orillia Folk Society and Don's Coffeehouse and it saved my life. No exaggeration there. Life is short, like Spaw says, and the human relationships one finds are what it's really all about, because that's where you can put everything else you've ever cared about into practice and actually do something with it.

BTW, which harmonica did you get?

I'm really busy. As a programmer, I'm in the final stage of a large project that will be a great success or my bankruptcy. A wife and two sons (and a third abroad) take much of my time. Then I sing in the choir and make some solos, and take classes of vocal technique, and read, and look for tech news in the net, participate in a local forum, go to the supermarket, and cook on weekends.

Then there's a hand that raises from the monitor and grabs my neck when I pass by the PC, and the Mudcat opens, and then I know that I'll sleep very few hours. Who cares ? I'll learn another bit, make a friend, and that's great.

Un abrazo - Andrés
