The South Roscommon Singers Circle is a group of singers in the Irish midlands, dedicated to preserving a tradition while sinking a few pints. Declan Coyne, who founded the group, has just published a lovely book called "...the lilting sons of country folk.." He describes it as "a dip into Irish Music in Mid and South Roscommon, the personalities and events, past an present."

Apart from details of local singers and musicians, past and present, it contains the words of many songs associated with the area or its singers, with extensive notes. While much of it is of largely local interest, I suspect many people would enjoy the picture the book gives of the living tradition of Irish music.

For the last 2 years, my singing partner, Bob Conroy, and I have toured singing clubs in Ireland. We are intrigued that we can travel for hours through villages with no singers and no singing. Then, lo and behold, come to a mere dot like Brideswell, Co. Roscommon (2 pubs - 1 with a petrol pump - and a pre-Christian holy well) and find a living tradition and great fellowship in song.

The most important factor is, of course, a critical mass of people who really want to do something with folk song and 1 or 2 people who'll do most of the work. South Roscommon and Declan Coyne, Martin Ryan and their friends have made singing there a reality.

Earlier, the South Roscommonites made a great CD and I'm sure this new book is equally fine.

Martin, we will take a book each and we're going to pick them up in person.

I spend a lot of time just up the road from Brideswell...in Taughmaconnell and Bealnamulla.
Will be there very soon for a month or so, many a great music night is spent around that area.

Martin,
I would love a book please and a cd if there are still any available.
As I said, I'll be in the area sometime next month....but I have friends that are around that could pay and collect for me?

Well, I finally got my copy of The Lilting Sons of Country Folk and a chance to look through it. As Martin Ryan pointed out above, it is a new book of local musical lore from the southern half of Co. Roscommon, Ireland. I just thought I'd take a minute to say a bit more about it because it's a work of immense charm and one most people will likely not otherwise come across.

The text is divided into 3 sections: 1) The Personalities and Events of Bye-Gone Days, 2) Some Popular and Traditional Songs associated with the region, the composers and the stories behind them (but no tunes), and 3) The Personalities and Events of Today. The author, Declan Coyne, is a sometimes singer, one-time fiddler and an everyday dairy farmer with a diploma in Community Development Practice.

Where the book succeeds admirably is in presenting an approximately 100-year slice of the musical life of a region of rural Ireland. In doing so, it reveals a great deal about Ireland's living folk song tradition through its ballad singers and composers. It is a book that puts faces on songs and color to the countryside. 224 pages with many pictures.

Thanks for refreshing the thread (which started before I joined Mudcat). I was given "What shall we do" by Phil Hughes (who was a member of the Herga folk club for many years)when he made a return visit to Herga a couple of years ago. I just rang Mary O'Connor (formerly Hinds) to let her know that there is now a book and website.
