Subject: Lyr Add: NEW RIVER TRAIN From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 22 Jan 02 - 08:15 PM Lyr Add: NEW RIVER TRAIN The verse with the incomplete line in the post by W. T. Bush should read: Oh, darlin', you can't love five, Oh, darlin', you can't love five, You can't love five and get honey from my beehive, Darlin', you can't love five. More verses: Oh, darling, the time ain't long, Oh, darling, the time ain't long, The time ain't long, till I'll be gone, Gone away on that New River Train. Oh, darling, remember what you said, Oh, darling, remember what you said, Remember that you said, you had rather see me dead, Than see me in my rough and rowdy ways. Oh, darling, you can't love two, Oh, darling, you can't love two, You can't love two and your little heart be true, Oh, darling, you can't love two. Oh, darling, come kiss me at your door, Oh, darling, come kiss me at your door, Come and kiss me at your door, for it's time that I must go, For I thought I heard that west-bound whistle blow. The above version, by Ernest Stoneman and the Sweet Brothers, 1928, is from "Long Steel Rail," by Norm Cohen, 1981, p. 466-469, Univ. Illinois Press. Earliest reports of the song come from Virginia. The Ward Family, of Galax, VA, claimed that the song became part of their repertoire in about 1895. The song probably refers to one of the two New River companies chartered by the Norfolk and Western and that worked in the 1880s). The earliest recording (and publication) was by Henry Whitter, of VA, in 1923 (similar to the Stoneman version). Whitter's version counted up to four; in 1925 a version by Kelly Harrell of the same area went up to six. The version quoted from Bill Munroe is Harrell's. Later, Vance Randolph collected a version that went up to ten. (All data from Cohen) @railroad @bluegrass @cheating lover |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm riding that New River Train From: Dale Rose Date: 23 Oct 00 - 02:00 AM I have been looking for a picture to illustrate the time and place of the New River Train. I located several more modern pictures, but finally have found one that will have to do. This picture from 1906, carries the inscriptions Greetings from Gauley Bridge, W. VA. at the top and New River at Gauley Junction at the bottom. The train running through the New River Gorge is a bit hard to spot but you can easily see the plume of smoke from the stack ~~ look for the engine at the right of the picture on the far bank. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm riding that New River Train From: Dale Rose Date: 13 Sep 00 - 09:56 PM Here is a somewhat interesting side track. Despite its name, the New River is actually one of the oldest rivers in North America. It flows north from North Carolina through Virginia into West Virginia, where the best known sections are. Trains still run through the Gorge via Amtrack. Each summer U S Forest Rangers board the trains to provide information about the sights along the way and the history of the river. The New River is also noted for its white water rafting. Each year approximately 100,000 people gather on the third Saturday of October for Bridge Day at New River Gorge Bridge, which has a central span of 1,700 feet and a total length of 3,030 feet, rising 876 feet above the riverbed. One of the main attractions is that on that day, BASE jumpers are legally permitted to jump from the bridge. I know, not all that much to do with the song, but many think it is the TRAIN that is new, rather than the RIVER! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm riding that New River Train From: GUEST,Pete Peterson at work Date: 13 Sep 00 - 11:36 AM yes, the Monroe Brothers (from whom most of us learned this, directly or indirectly) did indeed sing "darling you can't love one" and not "love but one". which makes it a great polyamory song, although that word would not be invented for another fifty years |

Subject: Lyr/Tune Add: NEW RIVER TRAIN From: Snuffy Date: 12 Sep 00 - 06:15 PM These words and tune are from the Penguin Book of American Folksongs (1964), compiled and edited with notes by Alan Lomax Darlin' you can't love one Darlin' you can't love one You can't love one and have any fun Darlin' you can't love one Darlin' you can't love two Darlin' you can't love two You can't love two and to me be true Darlin you can't love two .. three and get along with me .. four and come knocking at my door .. five and get honey from my hive .. six and keep me in this fix .. seven and expect to go to heaven .. eight and keep this business straight .. nine and see me all the time .. ten and be welcome here again Lomax says Some hillbilly, who came to town and discovered the limitations of his ancestral Calvinism, began this rhyme, and it has kept on rolling by itself from coast to coast, to become the national chant of a rebellious American libido.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm riding that New River Train From: Ferrara Date: 12 Sep 00 - 01:41 PM I know that chorus too, slightly differently, but no clue about the verses. Refresh this thread in a couple of days if you still don't have it. There are so many folks in this group who know zillions of old songs, someone will know at least who sang it. The tune I know is the same as
Oh darlin' you can't (actually, "cain't") love one
Oh darlin' you can't love two I think "three" went, "You can't love three and still love me ..." Come to think of it, these may really be the verses. The way I learned the chorus was:
I'm ridin' on that New River Train I'm not saying this is right. I'm just saying it's what I would sing unless somebody told me different.... ^^ |

I'm riding that New River train. (American Folk Song) There must be more to this song....I am not sure I trust the tune provided, either. It sounds a bit stilted. ~black walnut Click for related thread |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: New River Train lyric request From: dulcimer Date: 22 Oct 99 - 08:01 AM Actually, isn't this one of those songs which you make up verses. I have a friend who has sung it since the 1940's and he goes up to not loving ten. And I have a tape which combines 2 through 5. Maybe there is no "right" way to sing it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: New River Train lyric request From: unclenort Date: 21 Oct 99 - 11:18 AM one more verse from doc watson: darlin remember what you said(2x)sung with a slightly different meter but it fits. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: New River Train lyric request From: Warrren Date: 21 Oct 99 - 10:25 AM Thanks again for the help. I agree. It is "Honey from my bee hive." That is definitely the meter that I hear, and it fits perfectly. Also, on my CD of Bill and Charlie, I can hear the "you can't love *but* one" pretty clear, although I didn't I hear it the first few times. It is funny, I am originally from Kentucky, as is all of my family but I still have a little trouble picking out some of those lyrics. Love the music though. It is addicting. Now if I could just find a good song book with Bill's mandolin riffs transcribed :) Warren - wtbush@yahoo.com |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: New River Train lyric request From: Pete Peterson Date: 21 Oct 99 - 09:22 AM I hear that extra syllable in there-- "and get honey from my beehive" I have listened several times for the "but" in Darling you can't love but one-- and never heard it. It's the only way the song makes sense. . . without that it is the national anthem of polyamory which I doubt is what Bill and Charlie had in mind. Wade Ward's version is completely instrumental |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: New River Train lyric request From: Gene Date: 20 Oct 99 - 09:47 PM and get HONEY from my hive would make more sense....
