Subject: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: WyoWoman Date: 12 Sep 00 - 02:25 PM In the thread on the San Francisco festival, Radriano mentioned that he liked a particular shanty because he didn't get to yell enough in real life. I completely identify -- particularly since I'm not a boss anymore. ;-+ BUT, fear not. WE have songs to help us. For instance, "Alabama John Cherokee," with that satisfying grunt ...unhh ... after the "way-he-yah". What other songs do you know that provide a good grunting or yelling outlet? Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: WyoWoman Date: 12 Sep 00 - 05:00 PM Yes, Radriano, I'm coming to the Bay Area again -- I hope this fall. Waiting to hear about various job-related insanities to know whether I'll be moving again or staying put and if b.) then whether I'll actually be getting paid with some hint of regularity. But I definitely am looking forward to a return engagement. I've even learned a couple more songs! Whoo-hoo. MMario. Thank you so much for the words to the birthday song. I've been doing that for friends, but only remembered a verse or two. I'll print them out and keep them ever. Mbo -- do you know the Pogues' Christmas song? It's one of my seasonal favorites. Not one I do at the retirmement home, of course -- unless it's the House of the Setting Sun ... Good ones, everybody, keep 'em coming! ww |

Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: sophocleese Date: 12 Sep 00 - 08:16 PM God Rest ye Merry Gentleman sounds sort of Russian if you sing it kind of fast and punctuate each line with a deep 'Hey!'

Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: Mrrzy Date: 12 Sep 00 - 09:39 PM You get to thump on Home Boys Home, and clap at The Wild Rover, but my personal favorite Uunhh is Man Piaba - the one that Harry belafonte did on what was the first record my parents bought as a couple. It's about trying to figure out the birds and bees. The chorus I hear in his very West Indian voice is: Hey! Woman piaba and the man piaba And the tam tam call but the lemon grass The lily root, golly root, belly root UUUNH! And the famous randy scratch scratch. No points for guessing my favorite line... and as a child, I just LOOOOVED singing about that famous randy scratch scratch! |
Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: The Lighthouse Date: 12 Sep 00 - 10:36 PM "Drunken Sailor" is a good song for thumpin away. "Home Boys Home" obviously and "Wild Rover". Anyone know "John Kanaka"?? John Kanaka-naka too ri ay. Too ri ay WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH too ri ay! John Kanaka-naka too ri ay! |
Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: Marion Date: 12 Sep 00 - 11:06 PM I like the grunt in the chorus of "White Collar Holler" (I can't remember who wrote it; Stan Rogers sang it).

Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: Peter Kasin Date: 13 Sep 00 - 12:03 AM There's the chantey, "Dan, Dan." the chorus is nothing more than "Ar!" "Blood Red Roses" and "Bring "Em Down" are other great shout at the top of your lung chanteys. Real voice killing, hernia inducing ones! |
Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: jacko@nz Date: 13 Sep 00 - 01:53 AM John Kanakanaka and Blood Red Roses have had a mention, and i can manage a whoop or yelp into many shanties but my unrestrained shriek in Chinesee Bumboatman apparently blew Mbo clean off HearMe |

Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: Callie Date: 13 Sep 00 - 09:13 AM At a local session the evening used to end with "Jean". And after the chorus that goes "And I love 'er. I love 'er" etc everyone would grunt loudly, suggestively and in a vulgar fashion right on the first beat of the following bar - very funny and very satisfying. A few South African songs are good for singing your brains out: Senzenina and Nkosi Sikele Afrika. And for some reason the chorus of "Factory Lad" (with hand actions which can get a little irreverant - especially at "chuck") has always been satisfying:
Turning steel how do you feel Callie |
Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: sledge Date: 13 Sep 00 - 09:26 AM A song from the Napoleonic eara, The route has just come for the Blues, loud Huzzahs all round. |

I thought I heard the old man say UNNNHHH!! And then you've still got the chorus! Wassail! V |
Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: GUEST Date: 13 Sep 00 - 09:47 AM I reserve the right to differentiate between a holler and a pelvic thrust: Elvis was a long way from hollering, as was Burton Cummings in the lamentable "American Woman". But never mind that. Sophcleese has uncovered further evidence of the sinister "Yellow Rose of Texas/Gilligan's Island/" conspiracy: "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" can be sung to the same melodies.HAH! |
Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: GUEST,dan evergreen Date: 13 Sep 00 - 11:13 AM To make my little girl crack up, I used to throw in a few exclamations in this song: "When John Henry was a little baby, (WHOOOOOOOO!) Sitting on his mammy's knee, (GET DOWWWWN!) etc., etc.,..." Of course, "UNHHH!" would work good, too. |
Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 13 Sep 00 - 11:15 AM try singing Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer with ho-ho-hos...
Then one foggy Christmas Eve, Rise and Shine in the DT. On the third line of the chorus stand up and sing, Rise and shine and...(insert big umph or clap or stomp here)...give God the glory, glory...
So rise and shine and give God the glory glory This one is on the missing tunes list. I may try to do a midi from memory. Somehow, the ole memory always plays a few subtle tricks when trying to get the melody just right. Mary |

Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: WyoWoman Date: 13 Sep 00 - 11:49 AM Bugsy, honey, not to be impolite, but are you buggin' again? I don't recall any exclamations or grunts in either of the songs you suggested. Barbara Allen and Scarlet Ribbons? 'they called her Barbry Allen [UNNH]...') ('Scarlet ribbons for her hair ... AIIYYAAAAEEEEEEE!...)
But, heck. Maybe my memory is just ... huh? ... oh, .... faulty .... Mbo -- I'm not sure the name of it because someone gave it to me on a tape and didn't include the names of the songs. I just knew that it was a Pogues tape and their "Christmas" lyrics sort of suited my pissy and profoundly cynical mood at that particular time of my life. ww |
Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: Mbo Date: 13 Sep 00 - 12:29 PM Was it this? Fairytale of New York. |
Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: Clinton Hammond2 Date: 13 Sep 00 - 12:52 PM The White Collar Holler was written by Nigel Russell... And it's near the top of my list with the way Song Of The Lakes used to do "Rolling Down to old Maui", (Made Stan Rogers sound like a little girls blouse) and of late, James Keelaghans's "Number 37"... for it's "way-hey-ya-hey-yahey hey-ya hey-ya-hey!" {~` |
Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: Barbara Date: 13 Sep 00 - 01:02 PM The variant of the Volga Boatmen/Birthday song I know goes : Happy Birthday HUUUHH! Oh, Happy Birthday HUUUHH! Smoke and smog fill the air People dying everywhere Happy Birthday HUUUHH! Oh, Happy Birthday HUUUHH!
And I've heard a number of other verses on that theme. I think they may be in the Forum someplace, if someone wants to search.
And if you want to count less-serious, doesn't-shove-your-guts-out-your-mouth type "HUHs", there's always,
I don't see it in the database, but it's in Rise Up Singing.
There is also a singer I sing with regularly at the pub who has raised the art of 'but-saying' to a high level; Whenever the word 'but' appears in his song, BUT especially at the beginning of a line, he belts it out with enough force to remove paint from the walls and cause his adjacent companions to spill or spew their beer. Do you suppose it's relevant to say he's English? |
Subject: RE: Songs that let you holler or go 'unhh!' From: Marymac90 Date: 13 Sep 00 - 01:38 PM Since my favorite chanteys for yelling have already been mentioned by chanteyranger or others, I'll go to the rock genre that I so often disparage. WAR!!! What is it good for? Absolutely NOTHING!!! and We will, we will ROCK 'EM!!! I think these will do to sing your guts out with, if that's what you've gotta have. Not my usual taste, but I think they fill the bill. Marymac |
