Help: Historic 'Speakeasy' Music

A year and a bit ago we bought a great old house which came with the usual old wires and plumbing in the basement. But it also appears to have been used as a speakeasy in the Prohibition years (1920-1933.)(That's when America banned the sale of liquors-- A Speakeasy was an illlegal pub Finished in the 1920's with wooden floors, bead board waiscotting, and a great bar with the remenants of an ancient turntable built in, etc. It's a great space.. and someday when all the "real" work is done it may even have a ceiling again. The electrician and I tore it up while removing some "creative wiring". I'd love to start collecting some period recordings both blues and folk. And a year or so down the road when its all cleaned up perhaps it can have a Mudcat Christining(SP?)In the mean timeI'll have to settle for recordings. Suggestions??? Thanks so much MMario. I'll get the hang of music research yet. The links were great and enough to get my husband I both excited about a new music collection. We went out and got a copy of Musichound Blues so I can use your link help,the book and Mudcat's record shop when possible... Christmas is going to be fun. Also picked up a CD called Street Walkin Blues (1924-1956). I'm listening to it as I type and there is some great stuff here clearly there'll be some drift into my repetoire.

MMario provided some pretty comprehensive lists. I would add Ukelele Ike, Charlie Poole, and some of the great jug bands of the 20's: The Memphis Jug Band, Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers, and The Dixieland Jug Blowers.

Yazoo Records/ has some good compiliations of blues and old-time country music from the 20's.

Thanks Earl this is getting more and more fun as I go. The variety and energy of this music is great fun. Yazoo also has prints which was an unexpected bonus. Big Bill Broonzy and Memphis Minnie can have a place at the bar.
