Subject: Be careful: Pina colada

Hi folks,

I searched in alt.music.lyrics for weeks now without success, so maybe here somebody reads this and it makes click.

We search a country song sung by a male artist. The song was played often on radio (AFN Nuremberg, Germany) between 1980 and 1982. My wife thinks to remember that the song tells the story of a man lying on the beach and dreaming and she's not sure but also believes it ends with the man waking up. And here is more of the text she's pretty sure to remember:

...Drinking Pina Colada down in Puerto Rico we tangoed in Montego Bay.
We sipped champagne in the summer rain of a warm Caribbean day.
I took her pretty flowers in her long dark hair at the banks of Waikiki
And I left my heart in San Francisco where she first made love to me...

Sounds as a lesson in geography doesn't it? :-)))

And here an overview, which songs we could already exclude:
NOT: Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes
NOT: Two Pina Coladas by Garth Brooks
NOT: Montego Bay by Bobby Bloom
NOT: Flying down to Rio by Nesmith (from the Monkeys)
NOT: Desdemona's Building A Rocket Ship by Jimmy Buffet
NOT: Key Largo by Bertie Higgins
NOT: Kokomo by the Beach Boys
NOT: Balinese by ZZ Top
NOT: Werewolves of London by Warren Zevon
NOT: Bad sneakers by Steely Dan
NOT: Bubblin' Bubblin' by Rahzel
NOT: A Shot of Tequila and a Pina Colada by Jeffy K
NOT: Mother' s Pride
NOT: Sola Och Bada i Pina colada by Markoolio
TO BE CHECKED: I Got Mexico - Eddie Raven/Eddy Raven/Eddie Ravin (I found all these spellings???)
TO BE FURTHER CHECKED: Jimmy Buffet (but 30!!! of his Albums I have already searched without success)

LADY IN THE BLUE MERCEDES
(Daniel Darst, Gary Gentry)

It was a windy day down Malibu way. The California sun was shining.
I was in no hurry sipping bloody Marys and I fell asleep by the ocean.
Then a lovely lady in a blue Mercedes parked her car down by the sea.
She stepped into the sand and took me by the hand and we traveled away in my dreams.

CHORUS 1: And we drank piña coladas down in Puerto Rico. We tangoed in Montego Bay.
We sipped champagne in the summer rain on a warm Caribbean day.
I put a pretty flower in her long black hair on the sands of Waikiki,
And I left my heart in San Francisco where she first made love to me.

Then I woke to the sound of the tide coming in and the sun was almost gone.
I didn't want to wake from my beautiful dream but I had to take it on home.
Then somewhere in the evening came a heavenly voice saying, "Thank you for a wonderful day."
Then the beautiful lady in the blue Mercedes blew a kiss and drove away.

CHORUS 2: And we drank piña coladas down in Puerto Rico. We tangoed in Montego Bay.
We sipped champagne in the summer rain on a warm Caribbean day.
We stuffed our pockets full of pretty shells while the trade winds blew all night.
We bought mangoes and bananas in the marketplace and made love by the firelight.

[Fade out while repeating chorus.]

[As sung by Johnny Duncan on "Classic Country" Simitar CD 5633, 1998; and on "Pure Country" Sony CD 33695, 1998. Also sung by Lee Sims & the Platte River Band on "Back Trackin'".]
