Subject: Branded Wherever I Go

A woman at our Wednesday night sing did a fragment of a song because she didn't know the whole thing. The chorus goes like this:
Please don't wait for me darlin'
da-da da-da, da-da-da
I'll always be an ex-convict
And branded wherever I go.
(She figures that should be enough for us to find it, so I couldn't pry the second line from her). I found listings for a song called "Branded Wherever I go" - apparently it was recorded by Esco Hankins in 1961, by the Louvin Brothers & by Flatt & Scruggs, and on a Jim & Jesse album honoring Roy Acuff (so maybe Acuff recorded it, too) - but I can't find the lyrics. Can anybody help?
No, it isn't in Cowpie.
Thanks.

I've heard it too. 99% sure it's Merle Haggard.

Peter.

Don't know about Merle, but check your recordings by Esco Hankins, Louvin Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, Jim & Jesse, & Roy Acuff.

Subject: Lyr Add: BRANDED WHEREVER I GO ^^

I got this off an old Roy Acuff tape.

BRANDED WHEREVER I GO
(songwriter unknown)

Chorus
Please don't wait for me darling
We could never be happy I know
I'll always be an ex convict
And branded where ever I go.

I received the letter you wrote dear
In which you said you'd wait for me
I'm asking you to please not wait dear
It would only ruin your life I see.

repeat chorus

In three years my sentence is over
Them gates will swing wide for me
The Warden will say I'm a free man
But my name will never be free
repeat chorus

May God bless you for your kindness
You stuck with me through thick and thin
I love you too much to disgrace you
In closing God bless you again.

repeat chorus ^^

Dale Rose pointed out that there was a line missing from one verse, so Kendall supplied it and I pasted it in.

I thought maybe you were talking about the theme song from that old show "Branded" with um...who was it, Chuck Conners? Remember that?

Branded!
Scorned as the one who ran
What do you do when you're branded
And you know you're a man?
Wherever you go for the rest of your life
You must prove you're a man
LOL
