I am truly amazed at the wealth of knowledge of songs among the members of this Forum. You have answered several song questions. Let's try another.

This was a song that I heard on an episode of M*A*S*H. I've been hoping to see that particular episode on the reruns, but so far, no luck. All I really need is just one line.

On this particular episode, Hawkeye Pierce was writing a letter to his dad in Crabapple Cove, Maine. He is describing the other people in the camp & begins to describe the camp Priest, Father Mulchayhee (sp). He described him as a pious and devout man, but then he said, "Sometimes he surprises me. Like at a recent talent show." Then the scene shifts to the good Father & he is trying to remember a song he had known from some time ago. Then he begins to play the piano & sings:

"When you're all dressed up and no place to go,
Life seems weary, dreary, & slow.
My heart has ached & bled for the tears I've shed
When I'd no place to go unless I went back to bed.

(The Line I don't remember goes here.)
And whenever I go,
To that peaceful spot where the violets grow,
Upon a nice white stone will be written, I know:
"He was all dressed up and no place to go."

I hope someone can help me fill in the blanks.

Thanks,

Randall

Hi Randall,

Here's a nice MASH Songbook (click). "All Dressed Up And No Place To Go" is there, too.

Never heard it on MASH (though I could have sworn I've seen every episode at least 3 times), but I have been singing "All Dressed Up..." for years--learned it from a nifty record by John Greenaway called "The Cat Came Back and Other Fun Songs."

Well, thank you very much Karolina & Nancy, your replies were both most helpful. Gee Karolina, for someone who has never seen all these shows, you sure know a lot about them. You're quite an amazing young lady! The song book is really neat.

Thank you both.

Randall

Hey Randall, I didn't say I had never seen MASH! I have, and quite enjoyed it.

You're welcome.

ALL DRESSED UP AND NO PLACE TO GO

When you're all dressed up and no place to go,
Life seems weary, dreary, and slow.
My heart has ached and bled for the tears I've shed,
When I've no place to go unless I went back to bed.

I've had a sad, sad life and whenever I go
To that peaceful spot where the violets grow,
Upon a nice white stone will be written below:
"He was all dressed up and no place to go."

"When You're All Dressed Up and No Place to Go" performed by Raymond Hitchcock, appears on the 3-CD collection "Music from the New York Stage 1890-1920, Vol. 3: 1913-1917" Pearl CD 9056, 1993.

"All Dressed Up and No Place to Go" performed by Max Morath, appears on the album "Jonah Man: A Tribute to Bert Williams," Vanguard CD 79378, 1996.

A sample of Billy Murray singing this song can be found at Early 1900's Popular Songs, Recordings from Victrola (1913-1919) at this page: http://www.besmark.com/popular.html

It was also recorded by William Halley in 1919.

WHEN YOU'RE ALL DRESSED UP AND NO PLACE TO GO was written by Benjamin Hapgood Burt (1880-1950) and Silvio Hein (1879-1928) for the play, "The Beauty Shop."

By piecing together the lyrics from several sound samples, I have found that the following verse precedes the choruses given above:

When the light shines bright o'er the town at night,
And it's laughter, wine, and song,
Life is one delight if you stand in right
But it's fierce when you stand in wrong.
Though your soul may cry for the life on high,
And your coin you would gladly blow,
'Tis a bitter cup to be all dressed up
When you've no place at all to go.

Another song from Martin Page, Kiss Me Goodnight, Sergeant Major: The Songs and Ballads of World War II (Panther, p. 185; text only):

ALL DRESSED UP

All dressed up and nowhere to go,
Never a chance to dance, never a show,
Sentimental kind of people like me
Just keep on dreaming,
You know how unhappy dreamers can be.
All alone with no one to love,
Patiently wishing on stars up above,
Until someone comes along I'll always be blue
I know,
Alldressed up and nowhere to go.

this song was actually sung during the episode Dear Mildred. It is season 4, Potter first season btw, and he is writing home to his wife, it is their anniversary. This is also the episode that Radar gave Potter the horse, although in this episode the horse is a he.

Note we seem to be discussing two different songs with very similar titles. Here's one of them.

From the sheet music at Indiana University:

I'M ALL DRESSED UP AND NO PLACE TO GO
Words by Thomas S. Allen. Music by Joseph M. Daly.
Boston, Mass.: Daly, Music Publisher, Inc., 1913.

1. Young Willie Brown
Was known all over the town.
He was a wonderful flirt,
And just the noise of a skirt
Would always set his simple brain in a whirl.
He used to brag how he could get any girl.
This night he's standing around
A certain corner in town.
He looked so lonesome and sad.
His friend said, "Where is she, lad?"
Then Willie said, "Oh, please go 'way, Mister Gloom.
I've got trouble enough of my own.

CHORUS 1: Because I'm all dressed up and no place to go,
Roaming all around just like a Romeo.
Oh! Won't somebody take a little notice of me?
When I'm all dressed up and here I've got the cash to spend,
And I can't meet a single friend,

I'm all dressed up and no place to go.

2. "I'm waiting here,"
He said, "for one little dear
Since just a quarter to eight.
That was the time for the date.
I've been a-stalling 'round and just looking wise.
At ev'ry girl I've made these googley eyes.
I wore my best Sunday suit
Just so I'd look kind of cute.
I've stood right here on the street
Just so to give them a treat,
But now I guess I'll have to be on my way.
Nothing doing for Willie tonight.

CHORUS 2: Because I'm all dressed up and no place to go,
Roaming all around just like a Romeo.
Oh! Won't somebody take a little notice of me?
When I'm all dressed up and here I'm ready with the "dough,"
And not a "chick" to say "hello,"

I'm all dressed up and no place to go.

Here's the other, from the sheet music at The Archive of Popular American Music at UCLA:

WHEN YOU'RE ALL DRESSED UP AND NO PLACE TO GO
Words by Benjamin Hapgood Burt. Music by Silvio Hein.
New York: T. B Harms & Francis, Day & Hunter, 1913.

1. When the lights shine bright o'er the town at night,
And it's laughter, wine, and song,
Life is one delight if you stand in right,
But it's H-ll when you stand in wrong.
Though your soul may cry for the life called high,
And your coin you would gladly blow,
'Tis a bitter cup to be all dressed up
When you've no place at all to go.

CHORUS: When you're all dressed up an' no place to go,
Life seems weary, dreary, and slow.
My heart has ached and bled
For the tears I've shed
When I'd no place to go unless I went back to bed.
I've had a sad, sad life, and whenever I go
To that peaceful spot where the violets grow,
Upon a nice white stone will be written below:
"He was all dressed up but no place to go."

2. 'Midst the cheerful gloom of a hotel room,
I have sat dressed up at night,
And have sometimes thought that the clothes I've bought
Were to blame for my awful plight.
Then I've looked again at my manly frame,
And remarked to myself quite low:
'Tis a cruel fate that a fashion plate
Should have no place at all to go.

3. Once a friend of mine gave me one swell time
That I shall not soon forget.
The excitement he handed out to me
Was a brand that you don't oft get.
We went through Grant's Tomb in the afternoon,
Which was pleasure enough alone,
Then we went to call on his Uncle Paul
Who was sick in the Soldier's home.

4. I at one time sat 'neath my own silk hat,
In my ev'ning clothes and cane,
In a swell hotel where I did not dwell,
And hired them to page my name.
It was music sweet, to my ears a treat,
As my name they would loudly shout,
Till a large well-fed house detective said,
I was in, but was just going out.

You can hear a recording of WHEN YOU'RE ALL DRESSED UP AND NO PLACE TO GO sung by Billy Murray in 1914 at The Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project at UCSB (or click for the mp3 file).

He sings verses 1 and 3.
