Subject: RE: Canadian Content, Eh? Got any? From: quokka Date: 23 Apr 08 - 07:31 AM Resurrecting an old but interesting thread - obviously got too much time on hands at moment, can you tell? Recently saw Ron Hawkins sing - this guy is seriously good - Letter from Bilbao, anyone? Great song. Also Rosy and Grey: I want to take a street car downtown read Henry Miller and wander around Drink some Guinness from a tin Because my U.I. cheque has just come in Tell me where have you been because Everything is coming up rosy and grey And the wind is cold but the smell of snow Warms us today And your smile is fine and it's just like mine Won't go away... Everything is rosy and grey You've been under my skin now for more than eight years It's been eight years of laughter and eight years of tears can't remember the rest of the lyrics except for the rude bit lol Oh, btw i also had the extreme pleasure of seeing Genticorum!!!! WOW they are fantastic! Quokka |

For the true Canadophile(?!) I recommend a strange little CD called "Primadonna on a Moose" by Mary Lou Fallis. It's very very late Victorian operatic soprano though, so be warned! She went and found a bunch of old Canadian sheet music (1840's to 1910's) and put the best choices on the CD. Such great and enduring hits as: No, I'm not making this up. And I've got the lyrics sheet if anyone is desperate... |

Subject: RE: Canadian Content, Eh? Got any? From: GUEST,John Leeder Date: 20 Sep 00 - 03:04 PM Not to be confrontational, Steve, but... To me, the question whether Canadian Content regulations have "springboarded some people into international stardom" is not very relevant, since I've noticed that people who go on to achieve that exalted state mostly cease making music that has anything to say to me. To my mind, the purpose of CanCon is to help Canadian musicians to make a decent living while remaining in Canada and possibly making music that is relevant to Canadians. And I think it does that. I'm talking about "stardom" in the quasi-pop field, not the folk field, as folk music enthusiasts tend to be willing to embrace music from cultures other than their own. So a folk musician can become an "international star" in the folk world (whatever level of income this implies -- not on a par with Céline Dion's, I guess...) without having to abandon their cultural identity in their music. I'd like to hear Canadian working musicians comment on this -- anybody listening? |
Subject: RE: Canadian Content, Eh? Got any? From: GUEST,Chris Date: 20 Sep 00 - 12:30 PM "Guest" Pete Peterson mentioned "Sir John A McDonald Waltz" by Graham Townsend being almost unknown. Actually it's played down east, but under the title "La Rose". It's published in the fiddle book Music of Prince Edward Island, published by Mel Bay. It's also recently been republished in a Graham Townsend anthology. This is one of the staple tunes played by the Hamilton Old Tyme Fiddle Club, also the Niagara Region Fiddle Club, in the group waltz medleys. It's a lovely tune, with lots of variations on the second section. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Content, Eh? Got any? From: Steve Latimer Date: 20 Sep 00 - 11:39 AM Gordon Lightfoot is the exception, he was a star before CanCon. There is no question that CanCon has given us some pretty lame music as well, but it has also springboarded some people into international stardom. Would the likes of Celine, Shania, Barenaked Ladies etc. have made it without CanCon? I guess we'll never know. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Content, Eh? Got any? From: GUEST,John Leeder Date: 20 Sep 00 - 10:32 AM Re CanCon: Like Steve, I'm not close to the industry, but I believe the rules have had a positive effect. It would be very tempting for radio stations to get their playlists out of LA or wherever and blindly follow whatever continental directives are laid down -- you can bet the US programmers aren't going to pay attention to unknown (to them) Canadians. At least somewhere along the line radio programmers in Canada have to be aware of Canadian performers. Mind you, I get the impression that the criteria are pretty loose -- maybe someone who knows more about it can give us more details. Also, it would still be easy for programmers to fall back on the likes of Gordon Lightfoot, Shania Twain and Celine Dion. But I suspect people like those three wouldn't be where they are today if it weren't for CanCon. |
Subject: RE: Canadian Content, Eh? Got any? From: Naemanson Date: 20 Sep 00 - 10:14 AM This reminds me that my sisters and I knew more about the political representatives in New Brunswick than we did of our own national representatives when we were growing up in Northern Maine. My oldest sister even met the Prime Minister of New Brunswick before she knew who the Governor of the state was. Of course, this was in an age before cable TV when the only news you got came through the antenna on top of the house (no satellite dishes either). And CBC came in better than CBS. ABC and NBC we vague shapes through the snow. But CBC was clear as a bell. I remember watching a new British science fiction show on CBC about an old man who traveled the universe in a police box that was bigger on the inside than on the outside. It was years later that I found out what a cult following that show developed. |

Subject: RE: Canadian Content, Eh? Got any? From: Steve Latimer Date: 20 Sep 00 - 09:56 AM Art, I believe that they have, but I'm not as close to them as a Rick Fielding. If there are negative effects, Rick and other performers would know them. But all in all, I feel that the music industry which is dominated by American record companies would be just as happy to market exactly the same material north and south of the border. I believe that CanCon is at least partly responsible for the success of many of the artists mentioned here who may never have had a chance to be heard without it. And CanCon also spawned SCTV's "The McKenzie Brothers" which started as a lark. There thinking apparently being "If you want CanCon, we'll give you CanCon."

Subject: RE: Canadian Content, Eh? Got any? From: Art Thieme Date: 19 Sep 00 - 05:27 PM In today's papers there are stories of towns in ITALY that are rebelling against the seeming American takeover of their local quisine and culture. These lovely old places have banned the USA's brand of fast food establishments. They are pushing the older way of sitting down with the family for a real and more formal traditional dining experience. (How rustic??) When CANADIAN CONTENT LAWS were first instituted in the 1970s (from what I recall), it was an attempt to keep the culture of the USA from overwhelming Canada's home-grown arts and music etc. and all that that entails. So many minutes of every hour on television HAD TO BE Canadian Content. So many acts brought in for festivals had to be Canadian ! After playing at the Winnipeg Folk Festival twice, I began to realize the insideous nature of creeping Americanism----the buying of entire ways of life in the name of "progress" and the USA's idea of Capitalist Manifest Destiny. Looking back, I'm left wondering what effect Canadian Content rules have had over the last 30 years ? Have they done what was hoped ? Some few here in the USA are truly sorry to see the so-called "success" of our system. Rural America has been destroyed too. Indeed, we have seen our small towns, like the one we live in, Peru, Illinois, developed into grotesque mini versions of the urban sprawl that has turned the concrete cloverleaf into the National Flower. Red Lobster and Hamburger Helper are probably thinking about a merger---out of which the result will be a product like (maybe) "Lobster Helper". Could an alliance between Mark McGwire and McDonalds be far behind ? The'll pool their trillions to buy The St.Louis Cardinals baseball team and re-name the stadium The "McArena" where Michael Flatley will put on huge dance fest extravaganzas from whichever etnic group is in at the moment. Soooooooo, how is C.C. faring??? Art Thieme |

If that ain't content, I dunno what is, eh? Blessings, Barbara |

Subject: RE: Canadian Content, Eh? Got any? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 14 Sep 00 - 08:41 PM 22 million people sounds like a hell of a lot of people to me. There's 4 million or so in Ireland. And that's a hell of a lot of people too. (And the best music comes from the parts of Ireland with the fewest people.)
That's not in any way knocking Canada, but when it comes to folk music I tend to feel small is beautiful. As witness Newfoundland's contribution. (Or south of the border, as witness Appalachia.) |

Subject: RE: Canadian Content, Eh? Got any? From: Little Hawk Date: 14 Sep 00 - 07:57 PM Okay. Didja know that the following great folk singers all came from Canada? Ian & Sylvia Tyson Leonard Cohen Joni Mitchell Bruce Cockburn Gordon Lightfoot Buffy Sainte-Marie Stan Rogers The Band (mostly) Neil Young (is he a folksinger? Well sometimes.) Pretty good for a nation that had less than 22 million people at the time. Bullwinkle is also almost certainly from Canada, and so are Dudley Doright and sweet Nell. I'm not so sure about Snidely Whiplash. I think he may have been from Schenectady...
