To me, the question whether Canadian Content regulations have "springboarded some people into international stardom" is not very relevant, since I've noticed that people who go on to achieve that exalted state mostly cease making music that has anything to say to me. To my mind, the purpose of CanCon is to help Canadian musicians to make a decent living while remaining in Canada and possibly making music that is relevant to Canadians. And I think it does that. I'm talking about "stardom" in the quasi-pop field, not the folk field, as folk music enthusiasts tend to be willing to embrace music from cultures other than their own. So a folk musician can become an "international star" in the folk world (whatever level of income this implies -- not on a par with Céline Dion's, I guess...) without having to abandon their cultural identity in their music. I'd like to hear Canadian working musicians comment on this -- anybody listening? |

Actually it's played down east, but under the title "La Rose". It's published in the fiddle book Music of Prince Edward Island, published by Mel Bay. It's also recently been republished in a Graham Townsend anthology. This is one of the staple tunes played by the Hamilton Old Tyme Fiddle Club, also the Niagara Region Fiddle Club, in the group waltz medleys. It's a lovely tune, with lots of variations on the second section. |

It would be very tempting for radio stations to get their playlists out of LA or wherever and blindly follow whatever continental directives are laid down -- you can bet the US programmers aren't going to pay attention to unknown (to them) Canadians. At least somewhere along the line radio programmers in Canada have to be aware of Canadian performers. Mind you, I get the impression that the criteria are pretty loose -- maybe someone who knows more about it can give us more details. Also, it would still be easy for programmers to fall back on the likes of Gordon Lightfoot, Shania Twain and Celine Dion. But I suspect people like those three wouldn't be where they are today if it weren't for CanCon. |

My oldest sister even met the Prime Minister of New Brunswick before she knew who the Governor of the state was. Of course, this was in an age before cable TV when the only news you got came through the antenna on top of the house (no satellite dishes either). And CBC came in better than CBS. ABC and NBC we vague shapes through the snow. But CBC was clear as a bell. I remember watching a new British science fiction show on CBC about an old man who traveled the universe in a police box that was bigger on the inside than on the outside. It was years later that I found out what a cult following that show developed. |

If there are negative effects, Rick and other performers would know them. But all in all, I feel that the music industry which is dominated by American record companies would be just as happy to market exactly the same material north and south of the border. I believe that CanCon is at least partly responsible for the success of many of the artists mentioned here who may never have had a chance to be heard without it. And CanCon also spawned SCTV's "The McKenzie Brothers" which started as a lark. There thinking apparently being "If you want CanCon, we'll give you CanCon."

These lovely old places have banned the USA's brand of fast food establishments. They are pushing the older way of sitting down with the family for a real and more formal traditional dining experience. (How rustic??) When CANADIAN CONTENT LAWS were first instituted in the 1970s (from what I recall), it was an attempt to keep the culture of the USA from overwhelming Canada's home-grown arts and music etc. and all that that entails. So many minutes of every hour on television HAD TO BE Canadian Content. So many acts brought in for festivals had to be Canadian ! After playing at the Winnipeg Folk Festival twice, I began to realize the insideous nature of creeping Americanism----the buying of entire ways of life in the name of "progress" and the USA's idea of Capitalist Manifest Destiny. Looking back, I'm left wondering what effect Canadian Content rules have had over the last 30 years ? Have they done what was hoped ? Some few here in the USA are truly sorry to see the so-called "success" of our system. Rural America has been destroyed too. Indeed, we have seen our small towns, like the one we live in, Peru, Illinois, developed into grotesque mini versions of the urban sprawl that has turned the concrete cloverleaf into the National Flower. Red Lobster and Hamburger Helper are probably thinking about a merger---out of which the result will be a product like (maybe) "Lobster Helper". Could an alliance between Mark McGwire and McDonalds be far behind ? The'll pool their trillions to buy The St.Louis Cardinals baseball team and re-name the stadium The "McArena" where Michael Flatley will put on huge dance fest extravaganzas from whichever etnic group is in at the moment. It was a variety show that featured the Irish Rovers and was located in a pub. It was a bit like Hee-Haw meets folk music and I'm sure it predates Hee-Haw. Another Canadian TV show I remember was The Salvagers. |

Carlos Del Junco, twice named Hohner world Champion in both the Blues and Jazz Categories. Carlos used to have Kevin Breitt in his band, one of the most innovative guitarists I've ever heard. Paul's show with his band is always energetic and entertaining, but his solo acoustic is remarkable. He covers Robert Johnson, Muddy, Dylan, Bo Diddley etc very well as well as doing a lot of his own material that is deeply rooted in blues. In the early seventies they were the best selling band in the world for a while. I'm a big fan of Tim Horton's Coffee. I like my coffee strong and I usually find the coffee in the U.S. brewed too weak for my taste. But it seems that that's the way you guys like it. Perhaps we need stronger coffee to recover from our stronger beer. I'm surprised by how many fellow Canucks don't know who Tim Horton was, they only know his name from the Donut shops. Tim was probably the finest Defenceman in the N.H.L in the sixties right up until a certain Robert Gordon Orr burst upon the scene. He was a mainstay on the Sixties Toronto Maple Leaf dynasty, the last Toronto team to win the Stanley Cup. Of course, this year's team will be the next Toronto team to win it. Oh yeah and speaking of the sixties Leafs, how about Johhny Bower and "Honky the Christmas Goose" or "Clear the Track, Here comes Shack"
