The boy stood on the railroad track,
The train approaching fast --
The boy stepped off the railroad track
And let the train go past

----

The boy stood on the burning deck,
His ass toward the mast,
And vowed he wouldn't budge an inch
Till Oscar Wilde has passed.

----

My father's version...

The boy stood on the burning deck,
The lifeboat honked it's horn,
But alas the poor boy could not move,
For the fire had popped his corns.

He was a captain in the merchant marines during WW2

The boy stood on the burning deck
When all but he had fled
And a staggering pice of insight
Was flowing through his head
When the flame of truth hits the ship of state
And the tides of time are turning
They tend to blame the captain
When the ship is what is burning

By Aussie cartoonist Bruce Petty, on the political demise of prime minister William McMahon

The heat had popped his corns.

I remember this from a book my father had (about 60 years ago):

The boy stood on the burning deck,
He stood upon his head,
Because his arms and legs were off,
He waved his hands and said,

My name is Norval
On the Grampian hills the village smithy stands,
The smith a mighty man
Was wrecked on the pitiless Goodwin sands,

And by him sported on the green,
His little grandchild Wilhemene,

And we rushed to the signal rockets,
Lets fire them quick we cried,

And the good Abbot of Atherbrethock
Plunged headlong into the tide.

Now who will stand on either hand and guard the bridge with me,
Aboard the schooner Hesperus that sails the wintry sea,

I and two more to help me,
Will keep the foe in play,

For I'm to be Queen of May mother,
I'm to be Queen of May.

I looked this string up since my mum(90) remembers some of the verse and wants to find the full version.

The boy stood on the burning deck,
He stood upon his head,
Because his arms and legs were off,
So he waved his arms and said.......(or possibly "instead"....)

She then has forgotten the rest but knows it was a parody of many poems. It apparently ends
"For I'm to be Queen of the May, mother, I'm to be Queen of the May."

She thinks the "Village Blacksmith, a mighty man was he" appears in it it as well.

Any offers?

Correction and additional verses
BTW Granny B remembered all the verses at 91 but didnt know who i was - one of the penalties of growin old

The boy stood on the burning deck
And tied his whiskers round his neck
and shouted give me half a peck
and he drunk till he was fu'

And by the time that he lay drunk
the good ship sank and then it sunk
But he climbed up an elephants trunk
and whistled for the crew

And then there was an awful thud
that froze each sailors noble blood
for someone threw a rotten spud
and knocked off the captains wig

The captain in a rage he flew
blew up the ship and sacked the crew
And they're a' daen forty days the noo
for playin at bunnetty tig

My Grandfather said a short monologue in this vein

The boy stood on the burning deck
and shouted give me half a peck
So they geid him a bottle .... by the neck
and he drunk till he was fu'

And by the time that he lay drunk
the good ship sank and then it sunk
But he climbed up an elephants trunk
and whistled for the crew

The captain in a rage he flew
blew up the ship and sacked the crew
And they're a' daen forty days the noo

The boy stood on the burning deck,
His heart was a all a-twitter,
He stood 'till he could stand no more,
And became a crispy critter.

His heroic ashes blown about,
His shipmates all in gloom,
Hailed his courage, one and all,
'Ere breaking out the broom.

And now, collected, in the pan,
Now committed to the jar,
They placed him on the mantle high,
Inside of Paddy's bar.

And, now and then, when back on shore,
They raise their glasses high,
And 'toast' the lad above the fire,
Sayin' "better him than I!"
