I'd like to learn some Galician tunes, but have been heaving trouble locating any books or collections of instrumental dance music, airs, etc.. Does anyone have any suggestions re: books (collections, similar to O'Neil's Music of Ireland but re: Galician music), CD's that would give an overview of the range of Galician music, etc..

As usual, when Galicia is mentioned, I take the opportunity to name drop again what is still one of my favorites, Susana Seivane, piper deluxe. Some of the links in this thread no longer work, but the most recent one for Green Linnet does.

I have her first album, but have not yet ordered her second ~~ it seems to be not quite so available, at least in the US.

Not of much help to 8 pints in his quest for more info about her appearance in Glasgow, but certainly worth refreshing just to get the good word out again. Her album is still on my short list of favorites.

Note that Susanne's first CD includes some family snapshots in the very comprehensive booklet.

Also I'd second the recommendation for Tajedor - wonderful CD. And I'd add Pancho Alvarez, Les Violines and Camerata Meiga to the list of recommendations, for starters. Although possibly the best of all introductions is the "Cantigas de Nadal" compilation (Christmas Songs) by "various artists" - many of the tracks were specially recorded for the album, and it's stunning. As is the FNAC "Music of the Iberian Peninsula" sampler (not exclusively "folk", but none the worse for that . . )

Apart from the fact that Seivane is an outstanding player, it has struck me as odd to see that Milladoiro was missing in those lists about Spanish performers. I wonder if it is because they are so famous that don't need to be introduced here, but just in case they do, please get hold of something by them. They were (are) the forefathers of Spanish traditional music and an inspiration not only for Gallician musicians but for everyone here. Also try Llan de Cubel, from Asturias. By the way, I was saving for a year to buy a Seivane pipe, magnificent indeed (a medium, not an extraordinary one...couldn't have afforded it!). $1000 it was.

Well,well.... so much interest in obscure european bag-squeezing activities! The Sidmouth gig was indeed a memorable event,and marked the UK debut for her,later going on to Kelso festival and "celtic connections" in Glasgow(January 2001)...With a bit of luck she'll get invited back in 2002!

The new album has now been recorded,a promo-single has been sent out by the record co.(Boa),and the finished article (called "alma de buxo") should be in the shops next month. It also features a cameo appearance by the aforementioned wizard of the "triki": Kepa Junkera.

The distinctive pipe sound on her cd is partly due to the fact that she's been playing for 20 years and partly because her family have been the most famous pipe makers in galicia for three generations,and they've pretty much got it sussed out.

A must buy! The Linnet CD booklet said she started at age 3. Green Linnet often has 4 for price of 3 sales, and reduced price sales. It pays to put your name on their mailing list.

The high quality Sabelina sound file that I pointed to in the second paragraph of the first message (originally pointed to by Roger in Sheffield) still works, and gives you a representative sample of her music. I couldn't get the link for the whole album sample from Green Linnet to work (timed out), but it may later.

In any event, my advice is to run out and buy your own CD. I never did get around to posting my favorite album purchases of 2000, but this was certainly one of them. Useless trivia ~~ this is the only CD I have with the notes in three languages. (And one more time, I thank Roger for the original information.)

I also saw Susana at Sidmouth and was blown away (Carlos Nunez has the same effect!)We were on holiday in Asturias (right next to Galicia for clueless in Seattle) and heard some fantastic music in the hotel reception area: haven't been able to lay hands on a copy of the CD but it was: Tejedor - Texedores de Suanos. Going back to Susana: She's on at the "Both sides the Tweed" Festival at Kelso in the Scottish Borders on Friday 13th October: worth coming from Seattle for! Trish

Sam omits to mention that Bilbao 00:00 is a double CD with MANY guests - including Boutine Souriante. A couple of tracks let down (IMO) with over-sylised singing (see my comparison of Susanne "live" with her CD) but non the less highly recommended.

However the best of all Spanish CDs of recent years (and yes, we do have all those listed by Sam, and a few more) is that of Pancho Alvarez, "Flocencio, O Cego Dos Villares". For information see: http://www.folkworld.de/12/e/pancho.html

If I recall correctly it was FolkWorld's "record of the year" a couple of years back . . and thoroughly deserved; it really is a stunning album. (No "naff" singing, either!)

I'd meant to do a "rave" review of Sidmouth, but never found an opportunity to do so. Despite organisational difficulties it was a wonderful week's music . .

Knowing the interests of this group, the other thing I'd say to listen out for is Martin Simpson's recording of English Traditional songs (due on Topic whenever he gets it finished). Having heard some of it at Sidmouth, and also at Ely a few weeks before - where he did a superb accoustic workshop, billed as "meet the performer", accompanied by rotating morris dances, "rough" percussionists (playing milk pails, dustbin lids, etc.) and an Arab dance group, all performing about 80 yards from him . . . It's going to be sublime . .

Thanks for the offer, Escamillo, but it would be a lot of trouble. Though I often disparage the results given by babelfish, it still is a wonderful tool, and gives readable though far from perfect results. Here is an example of two paragraphs from the last link given.

Well, maybe that was not a good choice, but I am not going back to get another. I was surprised to read that Sonia Libidinski who provides the vocals on the album is only 14, also remarkable. (Earlier I said that Susana does one of them ~~ I read in another place that Sonia does them all ~~ conflicting info, but I am inclined to go with GeorgeH on this, apparently she does not sing)

One last parting word from babelfish. At the festival link given earlier, it says that food would include stuffed guts of lamb and slaughter of hogs ~~~ mmmmmmm, tasty!

Folk Roots did a lead article on her many issues ago.

Also - she was at Sidmouth this year, with her band, and played an absolutely stunning set; the sort of performance of which legends are made. To put it another way, it's one of the top half-dozen concerts I've ever been at; in Sidmouth terms I have to go back to the famous June Tabor concert in the Radway Cinema many years back, which June regarded (regards?) as the best gig she's ever done. Magic from beginning to end; total control of the audience, wonderful feel for varying the pace and intensity of the performance. And (IIRC) no songs . . (Why is it so many Iberian folk performances are at their weakest with their vocal numbers?)

Interestingly, while the CD photos are quite glamorous, she was far more casually dressed on stage.

Also - I don't think anyone's mentioned this . . her father is a very famous Galician pipe maker; we found another of our CDs, from about 10 years ago, is dedicated to him.

As I said before, she's outtasight and that's a lot for me to say about a piper. Thanks for the additional thread and the info above. My language skills are very limited (English too) and I'm interested in what else Jon finds. .......Its just kind of a striking style and the sound is a bit different although I don't know how that is acquired on pipes in terms of changes etc.

In a thread entitled BS: What do you think Mbo Roger in Sheffield put up a sound clip of an absolutely magical song on the pipes. A little detective work, and I found that it was Sabelina, by Susana Seivane, 23 year old piper from Galicia in Northern Spain. (sound clip compliments of rootsworld.com, a fine magazine) I figured Susana Seivane deserved a thread of her own, so here it is.

This info I got from the alway generous RA page from Green Linnet. Check it out for many other things of interest. Oh, and when they say SAMPLE, they are understating the matter ~~ these are FULL ALBUMS, quite listenable although recorded at 12 kbps. She sings one song, and Sonia Lebedynski sings another, the rest are instrumentals ~~ 43+ minutes of magic. (The object of course, is to get you to buy the album ~~ I just might do that. Here's another interesting page Maybe Jon Freeman can find the English version (I couldn't) for those of us with limited language skills. Copernic found 159 references for her, most not in English.
