I am quite flabbergasted.

On Saturday night, I was at a coffeehouse folk music concert and someone told me about Mudcat Cafe. He said it was full of nice people who all love folk music.

Well, in reading through the Forum threads over the past two days, I've been amazed at the extent of the nastiness and outright hatred that runds through so many of the threads.

I'm sure that most of you are very nice people, but this does not seem like a very nice place to me.

Selma or Patty - the MudCat like any other group - goes through periods of tension. And though it is neither a defense nor excuse, if you think the Mudcat has nastiness you should see other forums on the 'net. I have never seen as much nastiness at the 'cat as I routinely see on most other forums I monitor.

What threads have you not been reading. I see what you see but the nice thing about the site is that I can choose not to see some things. Sure, there are some nasty things being said. Some of them are spoken in haste and others out of sheer mean spiritedness.

But, and this is important, there are a lot of very nice things being said here as well. Keep looking.

Oh, and welcome to the Mudcat.

I have to agree I'm glad I stumbled in hear a few weeks ago. The last few days were a bit off, and I'm glad a few threads have disappeared. I spent the last two weeks handing out the web address to everyone I knew who had similar interests. Including the reference libraian for Episcopal House (The Diosease of Newark!) I'm really hoping that they've been too busy to check things out and that things will get back to the more TOC, intelligent, and warm community I was talking about.

It wasn't till I was reading last night that I realized that some refreshed threads weren't just to help me learn why NPR might not want to recognize music from the first three decades.
Please go back to what you do best
Really Selma and Patty it's great!

Of course my Three Piece suit husband is now grinning and threatening to grow up and be just like Spaw ....Just what did I get into???

The person who told me about Mudcat Cafe said that I should make up a nickname that's based on my name.

I happen to be a very positive person, I do not smoke and I do not allow smoking in my home. My children are both in college and doing very well.

Selma or Patty

Hang in there/here! Just watch out for threads that interest you , mark them with TRACE and concentrate on those, doing the odd trawl for new ones to add to the list. You'll soon develop an instinct for what/who/where to avoid. If you're interested in the music, the pluses outweigh the minuses.

We get a bit paranoid sometimes about people stirring things up, and sometimes that is appropriate - for example, I suspect that GUEST James is a stirrer.

It gets a bit loud here, and a bit heated at times -rarely nasty. Sometimes there are real disagreements, and its not a bad idea to get them out in the open, and see if there is some way around them.

One remarkably nasty bit of graffiti from a nameless source(and there's no way to stop that, it's the nature of the medium) - but the rest was pretty friendly. A bit suspicious maybe at times, but there's a history to that.

Ol' Bill in a first world war shellhole said "If you know of a better 'ole, go to it" - I'm not saying that, because it's not a welcoming thing to say. But if you know of a better 'ole on the Internet, let us know. I've found nothing approaching the Mudcat when it comes to quality of information and quality of friendship and of interesting argument. It'd be good to have something to fall back on on the occasions when the Mudcat crashes.

Well, SorP, I don't know what threads you'vre read, or what topics you might (or might not) be interested in, but what you will see if you look is that the notion and fact of free speech is very much alive and well at Mudcat. There are peoople here whose comment I always look forward to, and some I chose to ignore. And then there's the occasional flammer, sometimes a member and sometimes not. But the only thing worse is to think that they have no right to be here simply someone does not agree with their views. Narrow-minded people come in many varieties, just like the rest of us, but they are generally not among my personal favorites. I respectfully suggest you lighten-up and loosen-up and quit being judgmental. It does not become you.

Patty, if I had just found Mudcat and read only a few of the threads that are around right now, I also may have asked "What is going on here?" It's a shame that you were insulted in a personal message just as you were getting to know this place. I think your question was worth asking, and I hope people realize that Mudcat for newcomers is the slice of whatever threads they first come upon. If you stay, I think you will find better discussions and better people to communicate with than the one who sent you that message.

Lest you get the idea that I am knocking you, I did not mean that as a personal attack of any kind. However your initial post in this thread could quite easily be taken as a commment very similair to that in my example above. I'm sure you did not intend it that way -- but in this day and age it seems not to be intent that matters but rather perception.

I'm not sure why the general atmosphere on the 'cat has been riled up yet again, but truthfully, we sometimes go for weeks without an obnoxious thread - and frequently the number of music threads outweigh all the others; which may be ignored in any case. I would also ask pardon for those of us who have sufferred through multiple onslaughts of "trolls" (in the internet sense) as it tends to make some of us suspicious and touchy.

my two cents worth. You don't happen to own a copy of child's ballads, do you?

MMario, my opinion about why we went weeks without an obnoxious thread and why we've got 'em now is...we went weeks without the obnoxious person who posted them, and now he's come back hungry for more attention.

Patti, we're a diverse bunch of people, and not all of us are sane or nice. The mean people are a very small minority, (maybe 2 or 3 people out of hundreds) although we can all be upset if we let them get to us. "GUEST" up there is one of the meanies. They have no power unless we give it to them. (And some folks will continually do that.)

So, it either becomes a closed group, where one must be a member to post and members can be kicked out by disobeying rules, or it's open to all. I'd rather we all learned how to ignore the meanies. When we don't, we turn into meanies, too. "Please don't feed the sharks."

Welcome to Mudcat. Please hang around for a while, and get to know our best as well as our worst.

SorP,

There is also a regular cycle here, as in most communities, that when anything too positive or glorious is going on, such as excellent and thoughtful discussions over potenmtially controversial topics, certain folks just have to break the positivity and wade in with crap. To tear down whatever good was done.

You may have wandered in during that crap phase and gotten mistaken for part of it.

The proof is usually in the pudding, though, and if you enjoy this forum and contribute to it positively you will reap many blessings, as have we all.

In any event, come on over to the Tavern thread, last I checked we were all having a pretty goood time there. Introduce yourself!

(I've been warned that might not last, but I'm pretty sure that was a friendly warning for teasing that may come after I'm used to the place) I've been invited to Hearme even though I can't perform, and had nice "conversations" with several people. I've heard new music and some familiar ones and I LIKE THIS PLACE! Most of the "bad remarks" I've read seem to be between people who "know" each other and are just having an argument - I'll just stay out of the way on those.

I'd like to welcome SorP, too. Mudcatters are (like the rest of humanity) a widely varied bunch. If you stick around, ask for help, post a comment that doesn't knock the cafe (setting yourself up) you'll see, for the most part, a really nice, intellegent, sharing group of people. It works as a true community. I'm realtively new here myself, and have truly enjoyed the forum. "Good" and "bad" threads, alike.

Selma or Patty - I hope you stick around for a bit, and give Mudcat time. You'll see a lot of stuff worthwhile. I prbably spend more time in the DT then I do at the forum, or reading through the old music threads, but I do get sucked into some of the 'opinion' threads form time-to-time, and have seen some of the nastiness and even hatefulness you've alluded to (occasionally had it aimed at me). But it's easy to ignore, and it isn't prevalent.

You'll find some great folks posting here, some good thoughts, and some wonderful music. I am happy to say I'm a Mudcat fan!

Selma or Patty,

Welcome to the Mudcat.

Things have seemed a bit contentious around here lately. But that's just on some threads. If you want, you can ignore those threads. There are also some deeply thought-provoking, loving, light hearted, and even silly threads as well.

I would like to recommend "b. Say a prayer for Dirty", "Mudcat Tavern for tatterbrains", and, yes, even "Don't Post to This Thread, Either". I also second DougR's suggestion about reading the Help and Healing thread.

I've only been here for a few months, but already the Mudcat feels like family to me, and I've even become good friends with one or two people since I've been here. I stay out of the threads that make me feel uncomfortable. I'm having a great time in the ones that I like.

Best wishes,

Carol

Selma or Patty,

Welcome, but one thing that is often reccomended in FAQs for forums is to lurk a while. This is not to suggest that someone should not come straight in with a question or opinion but to suggest that maybe people are best advised to get a feel for a forum before jumping in with a question like "what is going on here".

I assume that you are new to all of this and I hope that you will enjoy being at Mudcat. As you get to know the place, you will actually discover that many of us, even with diferent takes on issues are actually friends and that even when fallouts occur, most of us "kiss and make up".

Selma or Patty, you are absolutely needed here, to help spread awareness of the genius that is the Simpsons. I got in a few Simpsons references in the "I wonder..." thread but other than that it's been a dry season.

Have you seen the one where Selma or Patty falls in love with Principal Skinner, who falls in love with the other twin?

Tomorrow... tomorrow is another school day!

PorS stick around...the joint is actually pretty cool. It is one of the more restrained discussion forums on any subject I have ever encountered.

If you want true nastiness and flaming go check out Fox News forum boards........

You will discover what a peaceful place this really is.

I've been nosing about for a cuple of years, and I've recognized a good many posters by name--even met a few. There are jerks here (re: GUEST at 1:09), but my best advice is to keep in mind what you want from the site and avoid flame wars.

Peace and Love

Jon Freeman's suggestion about 'lurking' before you jump in is a good one. I 'lurked' here for about a month before becoming a member and posting something, and I really think it helped me understand the place, and the people who 'inhabit' it. I've been here since... May? ...and only had two real bitter disagreements with members (even though I'm reluctant to call Conrad a 'member.' More of a glorified flaming guest, eh?). Which is quite a bit better than my real-life record during that time.

And welcome to Mudcat, SorP. You CAN'T leave. Your nickname is actually easy to remember:)

Selma or Patty -

This place houses a caring community of music lovers, at it's core. Since it is an open forum, it is inevitable that some flamers/trolls/stirrers will drop by, and as others have pointed out, there will at times be real differences debated here for all to see. I think if you give this site a good, long look, you will find something special about it. It may hit you slowly - an answer to a help message one day, a back and forth exchange of humorous jibes with someone another day, and if there is some unfortunate occurence happening in your life, such as a friend becoming very ill, or a family member dying, or a breakup of a relationship, you will find some very caring and intelligent people here who will go to bat for you with messages often showing wisdom and sage advice as well as moral support. There is a sense of community here that is not apparent from the beginning, but emerges as one becomes more familiar with this site. I logged onto another music site earlier this year, and found alot of flaming, alot of people making nasty remarks at the drop of a hat, and little of the sense of community that is here. Coming back here was like coming home. There's nothing like it on the web, so you might want to stick around and give it awhile, and as Catspaw said, choose the good stuff here.

Selma or Patty,
This place is like any community - populated by just the sort of people you'd find anywhere else; good, bad, indifferent and sometimes - just sometimes - bloody rude.
And then, of course, there's Catspaw - like that uncle you had as a kid who could fart in tune, knew all the words to the most unsuitable songs and exasperated your parents!
But where this place beats most other communities hands down is when you want some help. It could be some lyrics, some advice, a recipe or the answer to life, the universe and everything; whatever, someone will come up with the goods.
Stick around - ignore the eejits, truffle through the threads and don't be afraid to ask...and welcome on board.

I too "lurked" for a while..(not too long though..I couldn't wait to jump aboard and be part of this community). First, I read the "classic threads", figured out different relationships, found the photo gallery...put a face to the names and now I check in every day to see how it's goin'.....AND it's goin' good ... a little slow but good! These people are articulate.. sometimes I find that intimidating but not mean and nasty.

PS. Hearme for Mac's ...please..please.. please!! Cheers, LL

SorP, I do hope you come back to read this thread. You'll find that even though you got off on the wrong foot, this thread (with the exception of the odd flamer, whom you'll find wherever you wander on the 'Net) is basically a long, friendly list of people welcoming you among us with open arms. It's that kind of place.

And please don't think that my saying above that you got off on the wrong foot is a slam or a harsh criticism of any kind. I feel it's a true statement; it's considered poor nettiquette to read an online forum for only a day or two, and then post a message that says, essentially, "what a dump!" It really is best to get the feel of the room first.

If you do that, I think you'll find that a) the flamers are a decided minority, as you've already hinted, although they do sometimes stink up the place, b) some of what you might perceive as nastiness may in fact be badinage. Get used to our style of humor around here, and you'll see what I mean. Maybe you'll find that's not your style of humor, but at least you'll see the difference between one of us ribbing a friend, and one of us being genuinely pissed off. And c), some of the arguments here in the last few days have been over hot-button issues where some individuals are revealing long-standing hurts that most of us didn't even know they had, while others on the same threads lacked the context, until now, to even realize why such things hurt. That sort of conversation is likely to get heated no matter where it occurs, but if you reread those threads, you'll also find some of us at our impassioned best. We're human. Get to know us first.

But if the worst you can be accused of is poor nettiquette, then you're jake with me. Welcome, new friend. Pull up a stool. Ask for some lyrics. Provide some lyrics. Share a story or a joke. Best craic on the 'Net, I guarantee.

Chris

I joined a few months ago now and have recieved nothing but welcome and support - help with lyrics, great sessions on hearme, a cheering up and some damned good advice when i was having a bad time at work and I even won a mudcat snog of the week award!

I have met some catters in real life - several turned up to my local folk club one week. And I am beginning to make some new friends. I am also going to the UK gathering in October which looks like a real treat.

I think Mudcat is WONDERFUL!

Well. I get caught with my pants down sometimes, kinda like Homer, but there's few here like Sideshow Bob. Some try hard to appear that way, and others kid around at it quite successfully. You'll need to wander around here a while to make them all out. It's kinda like walking through a bar...step around the puke...duck the punches intended for others...and have a great time with your friends sharing fun, knowledge, and comfort.

Welcome home, Patty. (It is Patty isn't it?)

Peace, Mooh.

I have found that people here are extremely helpful, both with musical and semi-musical (heck, even non-musical) issues. I don't mind most of the BS posts because I think it's interesting to hear from people as individuals, not just as musicians. I don't expect everyone to agree with me and I don't expect to be right all the time, and there isn't anything I can say that won't touch a nerve with somebody. Oh, well. It's to be expected since we're all three-dimensional personalities and there are so many different backgrounds represented here. I've found that, even when people strongly disagree, they are pretty good about not jumping on others, and expressing themselves in a coherent and reasonable manner.

My guess is that some of the "nastiness" is also tongue- in-cheek between more seasoned Mudcatters, but I know that glibness doesn't carry well over computer screens.

Ely, Yeah, I get that idea too. Some folks just have ummm, a different sense of what's funny. Tongues firmly planted in cheeks don't necessarily translate well on the net. And like you said, some of the 'Cats perhaps know each other personally. So.....

They most certainly do soddy, some know each other in the 3D world and others like myself have met few others in person but have developed good friendships outside Mudcat. Hearme can also be interesting as you get to hear other catters and also exchange a bit of chat - sort of opens up a new dimension...

As regards the tongue in cheek remarks, the use of an emote icon such as ;-) or an indication such as *BG* can help to avoid missunderstandings.

Jon
