Subject: Oz folks - no Olympics From: GUEST,Lyle Date: 18 Sep 00 - 10:11 PM Just got back from a festival in a little town in Kansas (Walnut Valley Festival, Winfield, Kansas). It is four days of nonstop acoustic music, and IMHO, one of the great festivals of this country. Now, guess who the hit of the whole thing was?? TOMMY EMMANUEL. What a fantastic player!!! There are four stages going at the same time, and whenever he played, all the other stages were empty. He has been invited back next year, and it sounds like he wants to come here again. My questions to Oz folks: How come you've kept him to yourself for so long??? How many other's are you hiding?? He has a great website, but the first sentence is "Welcome to the official web site dedicated to arguably the world's greatest guitarist." WRONG!! There is NO argument! The website says his brother Phil is a great guitarist, too. Does he play in the same style? Do they ever tour together? I tried to buy a CD from him at the festival, but the lines were over an hour and a half long. Any suggestions of two or three of what you folks consider his best? Thanks for answering. And if that's a sample of your acoustic musicians, please load up 4 or 5 hunderd and bring them along!! Lyle |
Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: Bugsy Date: 18 Sep 00 - 10:25 PM Yes he is good isn't he? His brother, as I am led to believe used to play with him in earlier years, and I think still does on occasion. I seem to remember Tommy saying in an interview some time ago that his brother was the lead guitarist whilst he played Rhythm! Don't know for sure though. And that guitar he gets such wonderful sounds out of - is a MATON. Made in Australia, and IMHO, as good as they get. CHeers Bugsy

Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: GUEST,Callie Date: 18 Sep 00 - 11:25 PM The Emmanuel Brothers seem to have been around forever. Tommy played in loads of bands and as a session muso for years. Lots of pop music in the 80s featured brilliant guitar work from Tommy. Might sound odd, but I've never heard his cds. He plays so much that he's pretty much everywhere, and I've never felt the need to get into his recordings. His acoustic guitar version of "Lady Madonna" is probably around 8 years old and quite well known. If you can find an album with that on it, it will probably be a good one. I've never heard him play at folk festivals. He's pretty mainstream now - does lots of daytime tv appearances etc. There are tons of brilliant musicians who probably aren't known outside of Australia, but how would we know whether they are or aren't?! Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: katlaughing Date: 19 Sep 00 - 12:41 AM Please don't forget, if you want to help support the DT, see if Dick Greenhaus at Camsco Records can get the cd's you want; or Max, at the Mudcat Record Store; or Sandy Paton at Folk Legacy. You've got my curiosity up..I want to hear this guy(!), so I went looking and found this website,CLICK HERE which has a bunch of links, including stuff about his guitar and "why he doesn't play the guitars he endorses", whatever that is about. Also, here is a link to his official website. There are more folks talking about Tommy and the Festival over in the Winfield Time thread. Sounds like you all had a great time. Thanks for sharing, kat |

Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: Lena Date: 19 Sep 00 - 02:06 AM Besides Callie, thanks for the tape I enjoyed it so much and it's three days now I 'm munching...'Stick a point on the map,and I'll settle here...'.If it doesn't bother you,I think this is the right thread to tell me the names of the choirs/bands playing there... |
Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: GUEST,roo Date: 21 Sep 00 - 07:33 AM Another great guitarist here in Australia who would rival Tommy Emmanbuel is Michael Fix. Michael's website is at: http://www.ozemail.com.au/~mfix/ I've seen both perform live and they are pretty much equal. Michael is perhaps a little less the showman than Tommy, but then some would see that as good. There are many simnilarities in their style but it is hardly surprising as Michael was discovered by the legendary Tommy Emmanuel who became a mentor to the young guitarist and spent several years teaching and working with him. The Folk Australia website has links to lots of festivals and great Australian folk musicians if you are interested in learning more. It even has access to a lot of CDs etc for folk artists in Ayustralia. http://folk.mountaintracks.com.au/Folk_Australia/

Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: Lena Date: 22 Sep 00 - 12:35 AM Weak excuse darling. At the moment I wouldn't be able to stop listening to it...we'll do it another time.I knew already the song about Kitty Cane(who's the singer?!She must have been around for a long time)and heard from you that one about sticking a point on the map(oh my god what a nice way to describe it...forgive me)and I was wondering who's the singer if that one.Someone dropped the name "The Fagans".And also you put a lot of gorgeous choir music. Is that any helpful?! |
Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: Callie Date: 23 Sep 00 - 12:43 AM ok - Lena asked me to list artists I put on a tape for her, and to do so on this forum to increase non-Australians' list of 'singers to look out for'. Some of them are:
Margaret Walters (who sings with John Warner) singing "Kitty Kane" I also threw in some 'big names' - Paul Kelly, My Friend the Chocolate Cake, the Finn Brothers (they're Kiwis) Callie |
Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: Bob Bolton Date: 11 Oct 00 - 02:43 AM G'day Lena, I have just come back to Sydney, after a few weeks in the country - avoiding that Sports Carnival at Homebush - (and my birthday, which must be a few days after yours ... and about a third of century earlier!). I seem to remember that you mentioned working just down the road from me at the Capitol Theatre in Haymarket. I work at EnergyAustralia, 570 George Street: at the top of the hill out of Haymarket, opposite St Andrews' Cathedral and diagonally opposite the Town Hall. I take it that Callie has directed you to the local singing sessions and what few folk clubs survive Sydney's high rents and rapacious landlords. I see that her tape covered a good few of the regulars at The Loaded Dog, an inner suburban folk club with a strong leaning towards unplugged and unaccompanied singing. I hope you enjoy the Big Smoke -and don't get too hassled by our bureaucracy. Regards, Bob Bolton |
Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: alison Date: 11 Oct 00 - 03:15 AM Lena we have a nice little club out at Toongabbie if you're interested in venturing out West (only about 30 mins from central Sydney.) another great Aussie guitarist, (taught by Tommy Emmanuel)is Bruce Mathiske.... keep an eye out for him too... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: alison Date: 11 Oct 00 - 03:32 AM Here are some links for Bruce Mathiske and another I watched him at a folk festival over here, and many of the guitarists who were there reckoned he was better than Tommy Emmanuel. slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: Chris/Darwin Date: 11 Oct 00 - 08:49 AM I saw Tommy at a Tamworth festival Music Awards concert about 5 years ago, jamming with Albert Lee and a (then) young Australian guitarist called Rod McCormack. They traded licks for about 15 minutes, and you couldn't pick the difference in ability, although styles varied slightly. Incidentally, Rod won the National Banjo Championship a couple of times - he is the best 5-string banjo player I have ever heard - bar none, including the likes of John Hickman. Another great bluegrass guitarist is Andrew Clermont, who has toured the USA I believe. He has been National flatpick and fiddle champion numerous times. He is a pretty mean mandolin player as well! Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: Callie Date: 11 Oct 00 - 08:58 AM What about Damon Davies? Whenever I hear him play I vow to give up music and take up plumbing. Then I remember that I'd be a worse plumber than guitar player. Dang! Welcome back Alison! Slainte! Callie |

Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: Helen Date: 12 Oct 00 - 08:19 AM alison, Bruce Mathiske spent a number of years in Newcastle and established himself here as a bit of a legend. I believe he got started with recording here, too, with the help of Jill Gartrell, who runds Sandstock Music (mail order folk recordings). My hubby's claim to fame is that he took the photos used as the basis for the artwork on the cover of Bruce M's first recording. Helen |
Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: GUEST,roo Date: 12 Oct 00 - 08:35 AM Helen, do you know that Sandstock Music sadly is no more? Jill has just wound it up and sold all her remaining stock. She is heading north for life on the farm. |
Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: Helen Date: 12 Oct 00 - 07:58 PM roo, I knew she was considering doing that but we haven't seen her since September last year (she came to our wedding). It is sad because she had had that business going for a long time - at least 20 years? If we're lucky she might get the urge to start it up again after a bit of time off but if not, well she probably deserves the rest. Helen |
Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: Lena Date: 13 Oct 00 - 12:20 AM Capitol Theatre?!Bob,no.Are you confusing the Capitol theatre with the Opera House?!But actually,it could be an idea to apply for some work at the Capitol ;) (as soon as it stops raining,so that I can walk there.) .Very Happy you're back in Sydney(as if I ever met you...),and happy birthday!!! No,I've never been to the Loaded Dog.I never get around Annandale, for some strange reason.Probably because I never gel the right stop with the bus...but yes,Callie introduced me to the singing sessions(yahiii!) Subject: RE: Oz folks - no Olympics From: Bob Bolton Date: 13 Oct 00 - 11:19 PM G'day Lena, Sorry, I should not trust what passes for my memory to remember what I read on Mudcat before going on holidays. I didn't not want to waste time looking for the thread ... I should have, and got the facts straight! Annandale needs a specific bus - the 470 to Lilyfield (get off at Johnston Street and it is half a block away)upstairs in the old Council Chambers... or else any of the 4xx series that go further west - but then you have to know where to get off on Parramatta Road, how to get across and stay alive, and it is about 400 metres away, several block. It is a good singing venue, it has a great acoustic and Callie knows it quite well. Regards, Bob Bolton |
