From: GUEST,Jack Johnson on Puget Sound

A mandolin playing friend pulled out of his deep brain cells the tune and a few lines of "Buddy Bolen's Blues." We both like the song but it would be great to have a few more lyrics. Any help from you all would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

I think it's "Buddy Bolden" (?) and as I remember from seeing the lyrics somewhere eons ago, they're not very long. It was more of an instrumental. But, I could be wrong .

It's too late for me to type it out out right now, but if you'll remind me with a PM, I'll do it tomorrow.

This is the way I learned it. Taken from Rolf Cahn and Eric Von Schmidt's Folkways album. I have heard some varients

I thought I heard Buddy Bolden say,
Well I thought I heard Buddy Bolden say,
I thought I heard Buddy Bolden say,
Let Mr. Bolden play.

I thought I heard Frankie Dusen shout
Give me that money before I beat it out
Gal, give me that money fore I beats it out
I thought I heard him shout.

And I thought I heard Buddy Bolden say
Nasty bunch of dirty, take it away
You're terrible, you're awful, Take it away,
I thought I heard him say.

I thought I heard Buddy Bolden shout
Open up the window, let the bad air out
Open up that window, let the foul air out
I thought I heard him shout.

I thought I heard Judge Fogarty say,
Thirty days in the Market, Take him away
Give him a good broom to sweep with, take him away
I thought I heard him say.

BUDDY BOLDEN'S BLUES
As sung by Jelly Roll Morton on "Last Sessions: The Complete General Recordings" (1997)

1. Thought I heard Buddy Bolden say:
"You're nasty; you're dirty; take it away.
You're terrible; you're awful; take it away."
I thought I heard him say.

2. I thought I heard Buddy Bolden shout:
"Open up that window and let that bad air out.
Open up that window and let the foul air out."
I thought I heard Buddy Bolden say.

3. Thought I heard Judge Fogarty say:
"Thirty days in the Market; take him away.
Get him a good broom to sweep with; take him away."
I thought I heard him say.

4. Thought I heard Frankie Dusen shout:
"Gal, gi' me that money; I'm gonna beat it out.
I mean, gi' me that money like I explain' ya; I'm gonna beat it out."
'Cause I thought I heard Frankie Dusen say.

It is on Hugh Laurie's 'Let Them Talk.'

Yes, him who played 'House.' Very good CD, all blues, recorded in southern USA, with local talent.

My dad and I used to rock out on this song, him hammering out ragtime chords on the piano and me on the guitar.

He sang it:

"I thought I heard Buddy Bolden shout,
Funkybutt, funkybutt, let the stale air out.
Open up the windows, let the stale air out!
I thought I heard him shout!

I thought I heard Buddy Bolden say
Funkybutt, funkybutt, take it away!
Open up the windows, let the stale air out,
I thought I heard him shout."
