From: wysiwyg

Here in the Big City, on the edge of MudcatHood, there is a small, cozy-looking, warmly-lighted tavern, on the northeast corner. Can't miss it when you come into town.... laughter and music are spilling out of the open door... your dad used to tell you about a place just like this, where all the people would come after their shift over at the factory... or they'd bring the kids over for supper and a little eight-ball... it was THE social center back then, and look! Here it is again, open after all these years!

You're new in these parts but this looks like just the spot to make a few new friends. You cross the street to look closer.... go in... feels right frinedly-like... and inside, there are a bunch of other newcomers like yourself, as well as a few people who have the look of knowing their way around a bit (but here at this tavern, which after all is a family place, they're all on their best behavior)....

You mosey on in and choose where to sit... (write yourself doing this)... Is that a waiter or waitress coming over to take your drink order? Perhaps a game of cards going on in the corner you'd like to join? Or do you like to hang out with the bartender? (Write your scene there)

So, stranger, tell us about yourself... where do you hail from, what brung you here, and what's your game? Do ya play any kinda that-there folk music? Oh, do ya now? What do you play? What's yer name again? Oh, how'dja get a name like that??

(Some of us may head over to another place later tonight, maybe you'll join us, we can take a MudCab... and there's a concert cross-town, over at that HearMe place you keep hearing about...)

Periodically, a rousing song of welcome is heard, to the tune of Flop-Eared Mule...

~S~

Hi there,

I'm new around here and could do with a quick pint of real ale to recover from a summer of folk festivals and Morris dancing; mind if I sit by the fire and chill out for a bit?

What's that? Do I sing or play? Well yes, I do sing a bit and I play the anglo concertina.

The name? Well I'm the only Scotsman I know of who dances the Morris! Mainly Northwest Clog, but a bit of border as well; certainly a rare sight in Fife.

Thank-you barman, a wonderful pint of Harviestoun 80; just what I needed.

Aahhh!

Jock Morris

Well, Gee whiz. Am I the only newcomer to find this place. I'm no musician. Although in my younger days I did play the sax and was a drummer in a rock band (but I won't say how long ago that was). I'm no singer. My father once told me I couldn't carry a tune if it was packaged and put in a barrow.

I was bred and buttered, as my dear grandmother used so say, in Scranton, in the northeast corner of PA. Lived for a number of years in and near Harrisburg at the beginnin of my career and now call Pittsburgh home.

I found the Mudcat through a link at Foxes' Irish Archives when looking for the lyrics to a particular song. Since then, I have found the DT and other Mudcatters very helpful in obtainig lyrics to songs. And, after a couple of visits have gone from Guest to member.

Looking forward to hearing from some other newcomers.

Hi, my name is Arthur.

Coming as I do from Dublin, some say I got that name because of my father's fondness for the black stuff. Speaking of which, put on a pint for me, please.

Hi! I'm not really a newcomer, but could stand a wee pint and a bit of craic myself.

I'm from the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and play fiddle, guitar, sing and write in a Celtic/Bluegrass band. I see Lonesome EJ, whom I've had the pleasure to meet face to face. "Hi, EJ!"

Oh, I brought a plate of brownies. Is that alright? They're good with dark beers, especially Guinness.

I'm married to my bodhran player, whom I'll refer to as Himself. I have two wonderful daughters, a dog, a cat, and all the little beasties that live under our house.

Anybody ready to do some pickin'? I always am.

I met Jed Marum here, who plays banjo, guitar, a restrung Martin backpacker, sings and writes. Neat guy. Hope he pops in a little later.

Welcome all; let's do some singing and playing now.

Hi everyone,

I've been around for a few months now and am really enjoying Mudcat with all its benfits (mine's a pint of the black stuff too by the way). It occured to me that I have never formally introduced myself. I just sort of got involved in conversations and suddenly realised there are a lot of people more qualified to call themselves 'newbie' than I am anymore. I sort of miss it.

Anyway (hand outstretched).

My real name is (you guessed it) Catrin

I love singing just about as much as I love anything.

I have a day job (spit)

I have two daughters, ten and tweny years old, respectively.

Second to singing, I love propping up the bar with a pint or two and solving the problems of the universe with my friends.

Good to meet you all,

Catrin

Howdy.....

I have lurked for a long time but only started posting a couple of days ago.

Ahhhhhh let's see I'll get the important stuff out of the way first....

A Crown and 7 please....hold the 7 and bring a Harp chaser....thank you.

I play that folky music, but my definition of a folk song is somewhat expansive. If I can play a recognizable version of a tune on my acoustic and at least one other person knows the words....we have a folk song. It has entered the collective conciousness....if it is a good song it will still be there 50 or a 100 years from now.

I play guitar mostly but I also show up on bass and I can fake mandolin. I sing too. In fact I do most of the singing with the group I play with (God help us).

Carlin is my real name....I was named after great-grandpa.

And I hail from the great state of Florida....land of sunshine and sharks.

Nice to meet all of you.

Why do I find all the drinking threads (virtual) when I'm at work. Doh! Well I've been in and out of here for a few months but I'm still fairly new. I sing a bit play guitar, English concertina, and I'm learning flute. Nynia's (a guys name folks) from St. Ninian but I'm not that religious I just like the name. I'm in Dublin but heading back to S.W. Scotland in the near future to go to Uni as a muture student. I'd like to suggest that anyone who's not been to a hearme (a cyber-singaround) to look out for the thread and bookmark the link. It's brilliant fun. All you need is a soundcard and speakers and you can listen in. If you want to sing / play (there's no pressure to do so) you'll also need a microphone. Well as I'm at work I guess I'd better simply have a virtual non-alcoholic beer (rats), I'll have a pint of virtual Marstons Pedigree or Directors later. Guinnesschik the Brownies were lovely, a nice touch. Arthur where abouts in Dublin are you? (I'm in Fairview) Well folks gotta go, I hope to see you around soon.

Oh, this looks inviting, Okay if my beast of a dog lays over there by the fire ? My oversized mutt is 28 inches at the shoulder, but he's still following me like a puppy and Bubba always sits in at Hearme when I go. He particularly likes whistling interludes.

Guiness for me too... takes me back to my college days and the roommate who made her Menorah from Guiness bottles. We did pray as we prepared each one.

I play a little guitar. But being self taught around the campfire I know my limits. Love to sing and as a female tenor I've been exploring the Blues. Mudcatters have been mightly helpful and encouraging. Old ballads are my first love and songs that are just fun, like Bell Bottom Trousers.

I'm working on a non-virtual pub/speakeasy in my basement. And this is a great place to soak up the atmosphere.Well, the really world is a knocking, maybe I'll get back for a song later.

I'm very pleased to meet you. Welcome to this crazy place.

Naemanson, it's funny that you should start the songs with South Australia - I have my own version of the song that I wrote from a woman's point of view... it's the favorite at our local session, and oddly enough, now the only version most of the people know!
When Bill Sables was here, he sang some verses that were different than ones I knew, too. We talked about how people can make up all kinds of verses to that song - and do.

Now, I think I'd like a black & tan, but if it's not on tap, make it a Harp.

Speaking of "on tap", and just for a bit of trivia, which I'm told I'm full of, among other things. Around Allentown, PA, they used to call beer on tap "loose beer". I guess because it didn't come in a bottle or can.

Anybody here from the Allentown area? Do they still call it loose beer? Just curious. It's the only place I ever heard it called that.

Well, I'm supposed to be working. Bye for now.

Congrats!! Jock. May you and your lassie have many years of love and happiness. Me and my colleen are going on 30 of our own.

Hey Arthur and Nynia, by any chance do either of you know of a Meehan's Pub or Bar (or similar designation) in or close to Dublin? I've been told that there is one. But there's probably plenty all over the island. Our children are proposing a trip to Ireland for our 31st, and it would be nice to find it and have our pictures taken in front of the place having our family name on it.

They have suggested a two week stay in Ireland. However, we feel, since we'd be so close, that we'll also go to Scotland. Nynia, if you have any good suggestions on what to do or where to go, I'd like to hear them. By the way, good luck in your studies. Have you selected a major yet.

Greetings, Carlin. Thought I'd let you know that I like the Pogues. I also enjoy listening to U-2, and just this last March, when taping a show on PBS, which I overtimed to account for pledge breaks, I found that I had taped a concert in London by the Corrs.

Okay, after a glass or two now of the fine brown brew, I'll join in:

I shook her up. I shook her down. Heave away! Haul away! I shook her round and round the town. We're bound for South Australia.

Slainte gael mavourneen!

In fact when I was eighteen I was a complete scally and totally incapable of learning anything. It was the right time for me.

Heave away! Haul away!
Never trust a sailor boy!
They're bound for South Australia!

All you folkies come and see
Heave away, haul away
Mudcat Tavern's the place to be
I'm bound for South Australia

If you're stuck for a tune or the words of a song
Heave away, haul away
Ask and the answer won't take long
I'm bound for South Australia

Post a message and you will see
Heave away, haul away
It's all that you would wish it to be
I'm bound for South Australia.

Cheers (clink)

Catrin

Lepus--North Branch, eh? Born in Red Wing, myself. I've lived most of my life in South Dakota, but my Dad's kin hail from Millville, Wabasha Co., near Rochester, on the Zumbro River, and that's as near as any place in the world to being "where I'm from."

So, I've had the bar keep lay in a cold case of Hauensteins, and they've got some hamburger and tater tot (or whatever gramma found in the fridge) hot dish baking back in the kitchen.

Have a Howie! Or two; they're cheap, and they'll go through ya faster'n you can sing:

But one little thing can revive a guy, And that is home-made rhubarb pie. Serve it up, nice and hot. Maybe things aren't as bad as you thought.

Mama's little baby loves rhubarb, rhubarb, Beebopareebop Rhubarb Pie. Mama's little baby loves rhubarb, rhubarb, Beebopareebop Rhubarb Pie.

Welcome to newcomers one & all,

MNShad

Well ....... WELCOME ONE AND ALL TO THE MUDCAT!!!!!

Generally I'm called Spaw, although I've been called a few other things.......well, skip that...........As the biggest waster of bandwidth in the joint, you may already have encountered me somewhere, but I am really glad to see so many new folks in the village. I hope you all enjoy and learn from this place as much as I have. We have some fine, caring, helpful, compassionate, intelligent, and talented people here.............sadly, I'm not one of them but that's another story.

If you have questions be sure to ask......someone will answer.....probably not me 'cause I don't know squat, but we do have some who do. I hope you all have explored the place a bit......check the stuff in the pull down menu under "Quick Links." AND...if things get too overwhelming and you feel addiction setting in....well that's normal....but treatment is available at the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed. We'll send the Insanevac chopper to pick you up.

Enough of that........PRAISE!!! Get off your christly ass and bring me a Jack and coke......Just show the can to Jack and then throw it away....and make it a triple.....Gotta' get primed for Mudcat Radio tonight(7 PM Eastern US-Mudcat Time)......and put it on Bert's Visa...............say what?........Its full?........Well call and get a credit extension!!! Just keep the Jack coming my way huh?

AND AIRTO---We do have another member in Belgium....goes by mcmoo......Send him a PM. He's a super guy.

Spaw
