I'm a freak I'm a freak It's the pick me up I need. Subject: RE: Help: Percolator Song, Ever Heard of It ?? From: GUEST Date: 02 Jun 10 - 01:06 PM The original poster is asking about a song (NOT "Percolator Blues" or the Maxwell House jingle) that was played on KFAT radio back in the 1970s. ("I'm a freak, I'm a freak, I'm a coffee freak...") I just heard it on kfat.org, but they didn't give the artist's name, sadly. No mention of percolators in the lyric, but it is a GREAT java junkie novelty song. There was another great one they played by Ramblin' Jack Elliott called "One More Cup Of Coffee" |

Subject: RE: Help: Percolator Song, Ever Heard of It ?? From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 30 Jul 10 - 09:54 PM The 'Peculator Song' as done on the Maxwell house coffee commercials can be easily accomplished by flicking your two fingers(forefinger, and middle finger) against your cheek, with your mouth held open, to resonate the sound!..A little practice and you can get it PERFECT!...Done it for years! Subject: RE: Help: Percolator Song, Ever Heard of It ?? From: GUEST,beyond the sun Date: 17 Aug 10 - 09:50 PM Yea, I'm looking this too. Don't know who wrote it or what it's called, and I don't know why or how I can rember goofy stuff like this, but I can still sing it in my head, well most of it anyway. I don't even drink coffee. Picture it, Allentown (Pa.) 1977 (or so). I'm 11yrs. old, home from school, sick probably, and I'm listening to an AM radio station in the morning, when I hear what sounds like a witch start laughing or cackling like they do. There's sounds in the background to suggest she's stirring a bubbling cauldron while she continues to laugh, then an explosion silences everything. (on the radio that is) Not sure exactly how the song starts up, but the refrain goes: OH! I'm a freak, I'm a freak, I'm a coffee freak, and coffee freaks agree, if the ocean turns to coffee, bury us at sea, well make it strong and make it hot, forget the cup, just bring the pot, 'cause man that stuff it hits the spot, it's the pick-me-up I need. first verse: I go driving off to work with a cup of hot joe in my hand, OW! spill some on my shirt and almost hit a van! Driving and drinking can be risky I might not arrive alive, but if I can't have my coffee, son, who wants to survive? (refrain) second verse: I've got an autographed poster of Mrs. Olson on the wall, (ouh-ouh) and another one of Robert Young hanging in the hall, (ooouuuuh), and when I DO go to sleep I dream about caffine (ouh-waah) , and I never leave the house without my lucky coffee bean. (percolator sounds in the background) Well I guzzle that stuff all morning, and I guzzle all afternoon, and on my way home from work man I gotta stop for a cup or two, and then I have a few cups with dinner, and then a few after dinner cups, then a cup again with the news at ten, and I just can't shut-up. (deep low voice says 'soitenly' like 3 Stooges Curley did) (refrain, only more hyper at the end and a dopey sounding person saying 'yup-yup-yup' after 'it's the pick-me-up I need. (There may be another verse here, but I don't think so. Hey, come on, 1977 was a long time ago. I'm not sure how the final part starts, or of all the words, but it is spoken instead of sung.) He eventually says: gonna go out and look at the stars, it's such a pretty night. WOW! look at those babies shine! Hey, that's the Big Dipper up there! Well what do you know, it looks just like a big 'ole cup of coffee! Coffee!?! Mmmmm, that sounds good. Well what do you know, the paint's peeling off my house. I know what I'll do, I'll go inside and brew me up a big 'ole pot of coffee and come out here and paint this sucker! Yea! I can be done in time to get the kids off to school. Then I can stop off at the donut shop and get a cup of coffee before I go to work in the morning! (the song drifts off from here while he continues to talk about coffee) Been rembering all these songs and cartoons from my childhood in the '60's and '70's during the day, then I gotta try to find them. Stuff like the preamble to the constitution from School House Rock, Fred 'Tex' Avery, the king of screwball cartoons and Lenny Bruce's 'Thank You Mask Man'. Someone find this stupid percolator song and put it on youtube, you all got wondering about the possible missing verse now. |

Subject: RE: Help: Percolator Song, Ever Heard of It ?? From: Bat Goddess Date: 05 Jun 12 - 02:38 PM First song that came to my mind was "Java Jive" -- recorded by Manhattan Transfer on their first LP "Jukin'" in 1971. Subject: RE: Help: Percolator Song, Ever Heard of It ?? From: JohnInKansas Date: 05 Jun 12 - 04:38 PM I was a bit disappointed to find that both of the tunes posted by Bobab "way up there" have been removed by YouTube due to "complaints" and that the account for the one who apparently posted both has been closed due to "repeated violations." Apparently some just don't understand the value of nostalgia in advertising ????? (...sniff...) But I'm gonna freshen my cup anyway. John |
Subject: RE: Help: Percolator Song, Ever Heard of It ?? From: GUEST Date: 05 Jun 12 - 04:53 PM I like a proper cup of coffee. Made in a proper cup of coffee pot. I may be off my dot but I like a cup of coffee and I like it hot. Iron coffee pots and tin coffee pots, they're no use to me. If I can't have a proper cup of coffee in a proper cup of coffee pot, I'll have a cup of tea. |
Subject: RE: Help: Percolator Song, Ever Heard of It ?? From: Gurney Date: 05 Jun 12 - 06:18 PM I have 'Java Jive,' mentioned by Mr Red and posted by Roger the Skiffler, by both Manhattan Transfer and The Andrews Sisters. I have a notion that The Inkspots did it, too. Someone like them, anyway. If you want to sing the song suggested by Guest above, you need a very fast mouth to sing the chorus. It's 'want,' not 'like,' and 'from a proper coffee pot,' not 'and I like it hot.' |
Subject: RE: Help: Percolator Song, Ever Heard of It ?? From: beeliner Date: 06 Jun 12 - 02:18 AM This is a 72 song caled Hot Butter by a group called Popcorn, you can google it and find a sample of it on Amazon, they also have a song called perculator The previous poster has it turned around, the title is "Popcorn", the group is Hot Butter, but their 1972 version is a cover, the original is by Gershon Kingsley in 1969, and there have been MANY other cover versions, some of them virtually indistinguishable from Hot Butter's. Many versions are on YouTube, you could probably spend an hour or more listening to all of them. |

Subject: RE: Help: Percolator Song, Ever Heard of It ?? From: GUEST,fisannie Date: 19 Dec 13 - 04:17 PM There was a group in the 60s called Jay and the Americans. They recorded a commercial song for Maxwell House Coffee. It was just the sounds of a percolator they themselves did. I saw them perform in Jacksonville, Fl. Along with the songs that they were famous for they sang or percolated the commercial. It was great. Everyone loved it. Larry Black was a band member at the time. |
