Subject: RE: Bobby Sands, IRA and The Sands Family From: Susanne (skw) Date: 15 Oct 11 - 08:58 PM Richie Black - you're certainly right, they've always advocated non-violence and have been very active promoting mutual understanding. But have you read Tommy's autobiography? It provides some interesting info on what it took to reach that attitude. |
Subject: RE: Bobby Sands, IRA and The Sands Family From: GUEST,Song Date: 13 Oct 11 - 10:02 PM I asked Ben Sands, brother of Tommy and Colum and Anne, if Bobby was any relation. He told me that they did not know of a direct connection, but being that they are from the same region, he figured there was one way back. |
Subject: RE: Bobby Sands, IRA and The Sands Family From: Beer Date: 21 Mar 11 - 11:26 PM I would wager a bet that all the Sands are connected no matter which country they are located in. Jon, This is very strange. I just put my guitar down after singing "There Were Roses",then connected to Mudcat and here is the song being mentioned. Here I am living in Quebec for the last 40 years plus wishing i was home in the Atlantic Provinces and crying over Irish songs. I have a very strong connection to Ireland but that is for another time. ad. |
Subject: RE: Bobby Sands, IRA and The Sands Family From: GUEST,Alan Whittle Date: 21 Mar 11 - 10:36 PM I bet quite a few James Connolly's were shot around 1916. Sadly. |
Subject: RE: Bobby Sands, IRA and The Sands Family From: Richie Black (misused acct, bad email) Date: 21 Mar 11 - 08:19 AM I would like to see the title of this thread changed. There is absolutely NO connection with the Sands family and Robert Gerard Sands. The Sands Family are very well known in County Down, I met their parents Mick (Chief as he was known) and Bridie, several times whilst visiting family in Ireland, great people. Bridie was from a famous family in Warrenpoint County Down, called Connolly. She went through the same thing "are you related to James Connolly who was shot in 1916". The family love their Gaelic football, but never had any connections with republicanism. |
Subject: RE: Bobby Sands, IRA and The Sands Family From: GUEST,Desi C Date: 21 Mar 11 - 07:47 AM I believe the hunger striker Booby may have been a distant relative, I don't believe there is an IRA connection though, the Sands Family including Bobby and Colum Sands are a very talented bunch from Northern Ireland |

Subject: RE: Bobby Sands, IRA and The Sands Family From: GUEST Date: 18 Jul 10 - 09:07 PM About nine years ago, I asked Ben Sands if he was any relation to Bobby Sands. He said as far as he knew, they were not, but as the name was the same and they were from the same general area, it was likely there was a connection back somewhere. |
