Egad....the bar's open!!!!

Let yer quacks
and newspapers
be cuttin' their capers
bout curin' the vapors
the scratch and the gout!
With their magical potions
their serums and lotions
upholding their notions
They're mighty put out!

Who can tell the true physic
to all that's pathetic?
And pitch to the Devil
Crown cholic and spleen?
You'll know it I think
if you take a big drink
with your mouth at the brink
of a Jug of Poteen....

So stick to the Craythur
the best thing in Nature!
For sinkin' your sorrows
or raisin' your Joys!
For what moderational
dose in the nation
can give consolation
like poteen me boys!?!?

My goodness! an all-hours tavern, for those of us who don't want to face the world on Wednesday morning, when I've been up late the night before talking with my AFS son about EVERYTHING and I want to let down! but it's time to go off to work and turn this line back into a fax line. Boo!

Well, welcome Liland! MMario! Can you make a poem for the occasion? I am fresh out!

Rich, no, the thread would get them to start posting!

Liland - this Tavern provides one with the fluid of choice, so you may imbibe whatever, be it diet soda, tea or whatever. My preference is for something with caffiene rather then alcohol.

Well, I'm still a newcomer (albeit a member, and now I seem to have figured out how to get all three of my places to post from configured so as not to label me GUEST!), but I don't drink, so I'm not sure if I belong in a tavern ;-) but I will share a couple of the songs I sing in AA meetings, as well as my online photo albums (in French as well as in Esperanto — sorry, not yet available in English), and my baptismal hymn (with photos of me baptizing a guy; I am indeed a Baptist). The background tunes are, respectively, Webb, Auprès de ma blonde, La Krokodil', and Bun Easain (i.e. Bunessan). I'm 46, a native Seattleite, Yale dropout, musical illiterate (but my roommate's got two Master's degrees in it, so I can always ask him—if it's Classical) brought up on 60s folk/protest stuff.

(I know it's early. But it's Friday and Monday is a holiday, at least for some of us. So I think I'll start the weekend early, by playing a little hookey ffrom work and get on over to Newcomers.)

??????Locked????!!!!

Hey! (knock, knock, knock) Anybody in there? (knock, knock, knock)

Passerby: Oh, you can save your hand. Ain't been any one here in days. The place's been locked up tighter than a drum.

Empty??? No one here???
Sssssnnnniiiifff! :-(

Lonely I wandered by Newcomers Tavern,
Recalling to memory those happy days of yore.
Gone are the Catters; the Tavern stands deserted;
No light in the window. No welcome at the door.

Lone is the Tavern, and lonely its courtyard,
The Newbies are scattered; the Catters, they have gone.
Why stand I here so down-heartened and saddened?
'Tis time I were leaving; 'tis time I went home.

Hope to see you all again soon. Another time. Another place.

(Scene 1--At the office, closing up)

Ah, that's another day down the drain. And another week as well. And that means----IT'S FRIDAY:

Zip-a-dee-do-dah! Zip-a-dee-ay!
My, oh my, what a wonderful day;
'Cause a whole weekend's comin' my way!
Zip-a-dee-do-dah! Zip-a-dee-ay.

Awright! I think I'll take a stroll over to Newcomer's and have a Harp or two before going home. After all:

At the end of the day I like a little drink,
To raise up my voice and sing
...

(Looks at camera)

What? Oh I never said I wouldn't sing. I love to sing. I'd just starve tryin' to make a livin' at it.

(Closes door--fade to black)

* * *

(Scene 2--Walking toward the Tavern)

You're a short time livin' and a long time dead.
So let me give you my advice my friend:
Keep your water weak and your whiskey strong;
Keep your hands in your pockets and you won't go wrong.

(Enters the Tavern and goes to the bar)

It's Friday, and I'm treating for this round. Make mine a Harp. Will you all join me in a toast:

Here's a health unto bonnie Newcomer's,
For it's here you'll find the pleasure of life;
Good music, good friendship, and laughter,
And the best kind of craic in your life.

Slainte

I really hate to drink and run, but I'm off to a football game (American not FIFA). I'll stop by again on Monday to see you all. Until then, may the good Lord keep you in the palms of His hands.

(Fade to black)

See this is what I get for spending time offline and too much time in the real taverns. I miss all the fun. However, since I have left gainful employment to spend all my time on the Mudcat (er, I mean "studying hard") I'll keep an eye out for the next party.

Why is it that I always seem to come to the really good parties LATE? (and I'm gonna be late to the real one in Derry as well. Guess I'm shy about being a non drinker..Hey is that some raw cider that's been sitting out. It's got a bit of a bite now. MMMMMM!

I have my guitar with me, but I'm better at storytelling, and I CAN sing along, even if I can't always remember the words!

So I guess I'll just sit here and drink cider and play my guitar. Maybe Lepus will wake up and join me in song...

Welcome Mary!

We've been having some glorious sunrises here (the Seattle area) of late. After a spectacular windstorm about a week ago, the whole Puget Sound area has cleared wide open, with a few whispy clouds now and then for effect. The sunrises and sunsets have been simply stupendous. I especially love the very coppery light when the sun first peeks over the Cascades (our eastern mountain range) in the morning. Almost makes getting up early worth it!

Again, welcome!

Greets. I just went around the virtual corner and listened to Henry Varian at "the Coach". Then I went to Bowdoinham (close-enough to Bath) & watched a pretty sunrise. Thanks to both Barry Finn and Naemanson for triggering some happy memories.
Praise, are you in here? This is the first part of my song:
Noreen's the first Mudcat who welcomed me
little-did-I-know she's across the sea
p.s. what is Mbo building that he is always covered in sawdust?
You have so many nice friendships here.

Dulci, where I come from cider's stronger than beer and gives you a terrible hangover too. Perhaps U.S. cider is different?

Anyway here's 10lbs of cheese, 60 barrels of beer, 20 loaves of bread and the biggest jar of pickle I could find. D'you think that's enough?

Oh, for those of you who don't care for alcohol - I've done some freshly squeezed orange juice, just for you.

Enjoy

And if you all are going to drink anything stronger than cider, Well, I will volunteer to be the designated driver. Haven't driven a horse and buggy for while, but that's ok cause if anyone needs a designated driver, they won't even know I can't drive.

Right now I got to run down to the store get some donuts, and to the orchard and pick up the cider. YUM!! YUM!!

Can't have a square dance without donuts and cider.

Dulci - I'll dance with you. But first I need sustenance. A pint of beer and a ploughman's lunch for me. (in virtual life you can dance on a full stomach). In case you don't have it in US, a ploughman's lunch consists of a big chunk of cheese, a big chunk of bread and some pickle. Yummy.

Now, where's all those fiddlers?

I don't know if it is or isn't but I know the owner and I'm sure he won't mind. I don't play any real instruments, only persecution, er I mean percussion. It's not exactly PC for oldtimey music, but if it comes down to it the bodhrán can take the place of the bass fiddle. Hope some others show up, though. Need some lead players. Are you playing or calling or dancing.

Rich, I think all your confusion is coming from sleeping in an empty tavern and drinking alone.

Is this the place where there is going to be a square dance and clogging tonight? Sunday you know. If it is shouldn't we be getting the place ready? Since you are the only one here WAKE UP!!! Can't have a square dance and clogging without making the tavern look like a barn, and where are all the fiddle players!!!

Please don't tell me I am in the wrong place again.

I have been up and down to all Mudcat Taverns and each sends me to the next.

So if this isn't the place, can we please have it here anyway?

...nobody in here at all which is weird if you take into consideration that this is the only virtual tavern open on Sundays, you'd think that the place would be packed, but all of a sudden everybody here is too moral to come here on a sunday or something but since I'm here and I am tired and those couches are oh so comfortable, I think I might just take a wee bit of a nap,but first let me light a fire and take the chill from the room and I get the tinder going (Don't worry I'm lighting it in the fireplace this time!) and I get a creel of turf (good tune by the way) and I get that going on top and as the rich smell permeates through the air, I feel even mor tired but oh that warmth feels so good, and maybe I'l just linger by the fire for a bit till the room warms up, but I doubt I could keep my eyes open so I'll drag one of the couches over and curl up and a I drift off to sleep...perchance to dream....of a happy time when no one was arguing here and we sat and ate scones with jam and hot mulled cider and then I was playing for a céilí and there are some young step dancers that want to dance during the break , so we play for them and it's so exciting but I hit a rimshot and there's a blue clicky thing on my drum that says "finally a decent veggie hot dog", and I float down a wormhole full of unmatched socks and I'm suddenly in a VW Microbus (albeit without shovels and rakes and implements of distruction) and I step out onto the parking lot and and a girl wearing a paisley tuxedo, hands me a hot dog and says "It's vegan" (which is even more strict than my dietary constraints) and I bite into it and (now for the weird part) It actually tastes good and for the first time in my career as a vegetarian, I had a veggie dog that didn't make me wish I still ate meat but then I realize that the girl in the tuxedo is Britney Spears, and I realize I'm at a Dead Show in Indiana, and the weird part is she had to have been about 12 when the Dead were last playing, and what would she be doing here anyway and as I ponder this I wonder what I'm doing here considering I fell asleep in the year 2000 and this has got to be 1995 at the latest, but I know where to get the answers I seek so I go to to town and I go into Wal-Mart there is a television on in the children's clothing section for some reason and there are 3 toy commercials, back-to-back, during a program about knitting and everything is getting dark and.....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Well, you know last time I came here it was empty, but you know it wasn't so bad and the coffee I had earlier just doesn't compare to the stuff that Swede served, and besides, I owe him a "thank you", now that I've managed to translate that Swedish toast he said to English where it means "Finally a bodhrán player good enough to let live"(LOL), And while I'm not sure what that means I oughta go pay a visit, and wouldn't it be nice if there was a big crowd there today and a lot of musicians to play with and so I'm going up to the door and there's not a lot of wagons out front but if memory serves me correctly, they try to have patrons park in the back so decent folks don't get upset about us hanging out here on Sunday so I go up to the door and who do I see but....

An empty room except for the guest bartender and he only speaks Swedish and so I really can't engage in much conversation but he has a Swedish/English Dictionary and so I am able to get the point across that I could really use a cup of coffee and so we play checkers while we're waiting for it to brew and he beats me 9 games to 4 and he shows me a painting that he appears to have brought with him and there are Valkyries fighting with slingshots, marshmallow skewers, and potato spud guns, against a 3 headed giant and several Knights that used to say "nyeekh" and I'm just about to shrug it off as kind of meaningless (uncultured bodhránai that I am) when I realize that in the backgroung there are all sorts of images such as guitars and squirrels and flowers and I get lost in all the beautiful colors and the ingenius hidden portraits and landscapes and there is a map of Kerry in the fur of the giants tunic and....the coffee is ready and I really don't even want it now as when I go home I am going to bed, but I really oughta have a cup, seems how he made it on my account, and so I'll have just a wee bit and .....MMMMMM it's the best coffee I've had in ages so I sneak a peek at the burlap sack the coffe came out of and it says (curiously enough, in English) Scandinavian Christmas Blend and so I celebrate a little bit of Christmas in October and although we have no tongue in common, coffee and paintings are languages that anyone can understand but I've been here long enough and so I'll take my leave of my new found friend with a hearty hug and you guys REALLY should have been here!

Well it looks like I got here a bit late again I was really hoping for a tune, but it doesn't look like anyone's here there are no cars or horses or wagons out front (notthat that necessarily means that nobody's here) and it's sure quiet which would be a sign that nobody's here but one could only hope for maybe a small crowd and maybe somebody has a whistle or a possum-shaped ocarina in his or her pocket, but on the other hand, I always feel stupid walking into a pub with my bodhrán and not having anyone to play with and maybe I oughta just go home, but when you just go home and blow off the party you inevitably end up hearing that same old story that begins "You shoulda came man you REALLY should have come cause last night Paddy Keenan came in and played his pipes till sunrise, and Tommy Peoples and Kevin Crawford and Liz Carroll were all there and you REALLY shoulda been there..." and I always hate that cause then I'm kicking myself and saying that "I REALLY shoulda came.", and so I walk up to the door with my fingers crossed and I open the door and I walk in and I see...

Quick a drink, no a double. Just spent the day with forty 8th graders at the Brooklyn Museum's New Hip Hop Exhibit. They LIE. It's titled Roots, Rhythm, and Rage. One Zoot Suit and Cab Calloway's Sheet Music to Hi-de-ho....No Bawdy Blues, No Strange Fruit....

A fast polka perhaps, a Texas two-step... I need to wash the world away...Strengthing Prayers Requested

PS I spent two really great summers selling dictionaries in Texas...Road houses and Country Radio.. Little Yankee girl was never the same.

And, BTW, Noreen and all. Have a great weekend in the real world.

One last round! Is there still room on Bert's card? No? Here use my light blue card. Never seen one of those? Hey with that card the sky's the limit!

Drink up all for the week is over and the weekend begins here!
