Subject: lyr: Beautiful Bridgeport by the Sea From: green@scsu.ctstateu.edu Date: 17 Aug 97 - 07:06 PM I would like lyrics (and tune if possible) to the song about Bridgeport, Connecticut. It des- cribed a time when the city was known as Park City and was quite beautiful. any help would be much appreciated. |
Subject: RE: lyr: Beautiful Bridgeport by the Sea From: Charlie Baum Date: 19 Aug 97 - 02:44 AM The one rhyme I remember is:
I will never leave Connecticut And that Bridgeport by the sea. The only place I've ever heard it is on WPKN-FM (located, not surprisingly in Bridgeport). |

Subject: RE: lyr: Beautiful Bridgeport by the Sea From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 15 Mar 06 - 12:04 PM Beautiful Bridgeport is definitely a faint memory. We live a ten minute drive from there. There's not much beauty left anymore. I'ts like many old industrial cities in New England.. ambandoned buildings, high crime and drug use... The good news is thalt there are many dedicated people who are trying to lift the city out of the ashes. It will be a daunting task and take many years, but I've seen other NewEngland cities that seemed dead come back to life. Downtown Derby where we live looks like one of the worst sections of Bridgeport. But, there are development plans underway and it will be a beautiful city when they're done. The scale of the project is very different... we have a six block square area to re-do, and much of it is still in decent shape. Bridgeport has fifty times as much work to do. Would the words to Fair Baltimore, that beautiful City do? Jerry |
Subject: RE: lyr: Beautiful Bridgeport by the Sea From: Charlie Baum Date: 15 Mar 06 - 12:47 PM I know the words to "Baltimore, the beautiful city," but it's not an acceptable substitute. The authors of "The Baltimore Fire" (associated with Charlie Poole, dealing with the fire of February, 1904) don't have clever rhymes for "centennial" and "Connecticut". "Bridgeport by the Sea" is by Vaughan DeLeath, [possibly Vaughn deLeath] circa 1936, and was written for the centennial of the city (which was created from parts of Stratford and Fairfield and incorporated in 1836). Jerry--I've always found downtown Derby charming, in an odd ramshackle way. But I grew up in Trumbull. --Charlie Baum |
Subject: RE: lyr: Beautiful Bridgeport by the Sea From: GUEST,Joe_F Date: 15 Mar 06 - 10:10 PM From my journal, 22 December 1972: It took 1쳌½ h to get out of Manhattan. A little black boy next to me wanted to be reassured of every step of the way to Bridgeport (are we in the Bronx? in Connecticut?) & as we passed into that dreary town delightedly pointed out, from the vantage of the Turnpike, every street & hamburger joint of Home. --- Joe Fineman joe_f@verizon.net ||: Don't Run Away from a Fight married Don't Walk Away from a Mess. :|| |
Subject: RE: lyr: Beautiful Bridgeport by the Sea From: Jim Dixon Date: 18 Mar 06 - 03:41 PM BRIDGEPORT BY THE SEA was originally recorded by Vaughn deLeath in 1936. Tom Callinan wrote a second verse to it and sang it on his 2001 album "Connecticut Grown." That's all the information I was able to find. |
Subject: RE: lyr: Beautiful Bridgeport by the Sea From: GUEST,Guest Date: 27 Dec 06 - 01:31 AM Now and again, a scratchy old copy is played over WFMU internet radio. Go to WFMU.org, click Search Central and then click the name or title (i think bridgeport, not beautiful). the DJ is Dave the Spazz. |
Subject: Lyr Add: BRIDGEPORT BY THE SEA (Vaughn deLeath) From: Charlie Baum Date: 29 Jul 08 - 02:23 PM Thanks to the last message, I was able to find a Real-Audio archive recording of Vaughn DeLeath singing "Bridgeport by the Sea" on Dave the Spazz's playlists, and transcribed the following from that recording: BRIDGEPORT BY THE SEA Vaughn DeLeath Some folks think the sun shines brightest In a far-off tropic clime But for mine I'll take New England Winter spring or summertime I know my fervor won't grow less For Bridgeport is my port of happiness Bridgeport by the sea That's where I'll always want to be Where the great ships go sailing by Where there's always a smiling sky Bridgeport by the sea Is home sweet home to me Though we have a great centennial My devotion is perennial For my Bridgeport by the sea Lovely parks where the kids can play Or slack around at the beach all day Bridgeport by the sea Fair home of industry You can bet your bottom penny but I will never leave Connecticut And my Bridgeport by the sea --Charlie Baum |
