Subject: RE: Tune Req: Peace River Waltz From: leeneia Date: 07 Jul 13 - 07:12 PM See if your public library will let you check out some nice, fat fake books of recent vintage. You and he can page through together, looking for pieces which are good for both of you. I'm playing the Peace River Waltz on piano. It's a nice piece, traditional yet not old-fashioned. I play a lot of fiddle tunes, and its modern sound makes for a nice change. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Peace River Waltz From: Ebbie Date: 06 Jul 13 - 10:31 PM Yes, I agree. I don't know - at all - that loving country music is unusual among our Native Indians. In Alaska, amongst themselves and for exhibitions, our local Indians sing their historical traditional tunes; when they sing with us they tend to prefer Gospel (Christian) songs. I was probably thinking of a Black man that I am currently working with on guitar. He has never played any instrument and says he doesn't sing but he wants to learn. I asked him who his favorite songs and singers are and he said, Well, I used to like the Supremes. I liked a lot of their songs but there aint' no use thinkin' that I'm going to be teaching him a Motown piece so I'm not sure where we will end up. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Peace River Waltz From: leeneia Date: 06 Jul 13 - 11:20 AM I agree, guest. When you leave the big cities of America, you find three kinds of radio station. Sappy religious stations; ugly, harsh rock stations and country stations. It's no surprise that people of all races go for the country music. Long ago, my husband had a co-worker, Dan, from rural Kansas. One day they were taking a long ride in a company pick-up truck, and the DH put a tape of Ferrante & Teicher playing rhapsodies in the tape player. Dan had never heard music like that in his life. He said he hadn't known that music like that existed. He loved it. Of course, one could argue that the Hungarian Rhapsodies are country in its highest form. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Peace River Waltz From: GUEST Date: 06 Jul 13 - 02:30 AM "Art is an unusual First Nation man in that his preference in song is Country music." That is not at all unusual in my experience. |
Subject: Lyr Add: GO ASK THAT OLD COWBOY (Buddy Tabor) From: Ebbie Date: 05 Jul 13 - 04:00 PM Interesting that this subject should come up now. I heard it for the first time a couple of weeks ago, sung by Art Johns, a Tlinget from Tagish, Yukon Territory. Art is an unusual First Nation man in that his preference in song is Country music. He is a retired horse wrangler so his second love is Cowboy music. The late Buddy Tabor wrote about Art: GO ASK THAT OLD COWBOY (Buddy Tabor) Go ask that old cowboy, he'll tell you what's true He remembers this country before the highway came through He remembers this road as a long, dusty trail Go ask that old cowboy, he'll tell you no tale And the years flowed like whiskey. He don't drink it no more Go ask that old cowboy as he walks out the door Go ask that old cowboy, he'll tell you no lies He remembers the friends that slipped right on by About a wreck on the highway, how they drank and they died Go ask that old cowboy with a tear in his eye Go ask that old cowboy about the horses that bucked That broke all his bones and busted his luck About the wild ones that threw him, stomped holes in the ground Go ask that old cowboy; he's feeling down |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Peace River Waltz From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 05 Jul 13 - 02:53 PM Thanks for explaining about the caterpillars. Of course, herding them, not riding them, makes so much more sense. Miniature corgis would be a lot of help with that. I like 'The Peace River Waltz' and I've made a MIDO of it so I can change it from C to D and make it more guitar-friendly. Now to depart from here and hook up the new printer. Have fun at the Stampede. I wish I could be there. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Peace River Waltz From: GUEST,meself Date: 05 Jul 13 - 10:29 AM Actually, they're the usual size - this is 'driving' in the sense of 'herding' - and believe me, herding caterpillars isn't as easy as you might imagine! Btw, the Calgary Stampede opens tomorrow - the caterpillar events are always my favourite, even though you don't hear much about them .... ------------------------ I heard a fiddler playing the Peace River Waltz in Calgary recently, and there was some discussion of the tune and its origins - so it is still being played here, although it's not one you hear often, I wouldn't say. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Peace River Waltz From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 05 Jul 13 - 09:35 AM Thanks for posting that link, Guest. I had looked at that site but didn't notice the link. I believe I'll add that waltz to my repertoire. The information on the composer says that "Coming from a musical family, he realized that he had to supplement his musical career so he held a series of day jobs as a caterpillar driver, farmer, logger and dishwasher." They must have really big caterpillars in Alberta, that's all I've got to say. |

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: PEACE RIVER WALTZ From: GUEST,Norval Date: 03 Jan 03 - 05:30 PM Here are the lyrics and chords in the key of C from an older simplified piano folio. Peace River Waltz [Keray Regan] It was [C]under northern stars, Vio[G7]lins and guitars Played a dreamy waltz just for [C]two. While they softly played, our hearts [G7]quietly strayed Along with the Peace River [C]Waltz. [C]Lights [B]turned [Bb]down [A]low, We [D7]both did know [G7]Soon we would say [G+]good[C]-bye. [C]I [B]held [Bb]you [A]tight, We [D7]kissed that night While [G7]dancing the Peace River [C]Waltz. It was known right from the start, that some day we must part, Because I took those vows once before. Though we had to part, you will stay in my heart, Along with the Peace River Waltz. Lights turned down low, We both did know Soon we would say good-bye. It made you cry, we kissed good-bye While dancing the Peace River Waltz. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Peace River Waltz From: rabbitrunning Date: 23 Sep 00 - 11:49 PM No luck. I found "Peace River Jig" and "Peace River Breakdown", but no waltzes. They're both mentioned here if that helps. |
Subject: Peace River Waltz From: Barry T Date: 23 Sep 00 - 12:01 AM A visitor to my website asked me to sequence this tune... which I've not heard. Apparently it originated in or was popularized in Alberta, Canada, back in the 50's.
