Well first I just sit there crunching my nuts and I guess they take pity on me.

Dulci....Lum's did have some decent dogs. I don't know how far out of the Ohio/Indiana territory they got, do you?

Does anyone remember "Wiener King?" It was a hot dog version of "Burger King." They had a 1/4 pound hot dog on a sesame seed hot dog bun.

I once ate a veggie dog. It made me ill. The skin was all rubbery, and had these bizarre green bits in it, not to mention and noxious smell. Gie tae me my bubba-q'ed beef HD's anyday!

My favorite was the hot dogs we would get at a place called Lum's. Best hot dog anywhere, steamed in beer, topped with mustard, coney sauce, relish, onions.

See what you all went and did, got me hungry for something I can no longer get. They done left town :-(

My favorite hot dog is the veggie dog that I just had in a dream at the Mudcat Tavern.

I'm a vegetarian as well, but I must be missing something when it comes to vegetarian hot dogs. I've had all sorts of seitan prducts that were delicious, including a convincing pepperoni roll and mock chicken teriyaki. I've made some delicious meals that people raved over until I told them it was tofu and then had the say "I didn't like that". I like Boca-Burgers and Harvest Burgers (especially the Italian style variety), but somehow, Veggie dogs just never did it for me. If anybody can recommend a good tofu dog, I'd appreciate it.
Slán,
Rich

Well BonnAmi, ther's nothing like a good ball game to bring out the junk food addict in me. Like the Budweiser commercial says, there's nothing like being at a ballpark on a hot summer's day. sitting on those hard seats and crunching your nuts or being right there behind home plate rubbing mustard on your wiener.

You know Catspaw, I can just see you, Cleigh and The Boys being served at a hot dog stand. Very funny picture in my mind.
Why I can even see you with one of those Nathan's baseball caps on selling the weiners.
Thats an even funnier image in my mind.

On the really good side, I'd have to go with Nathan's hands down. But ya' know, hot dogs are such basically schlock food to begin with, not to mention their allowable 2% content of floor sweepings, hair, and rat excrement, that the "good" concept for me somehow translates into BAD. I can buy some Ball Parks, great buns, coney sauce, kraut, slaw, relish......the works right?....and somehow I keep going back to those things that they sell at Ohio State football games. The indeterminate frank is possibly cooked and then thrown into an oversize bun, wrapped in a wax paper type stuff (you know the stuff...you try to wipe off the mustard with it and end up being covered in mustard flavored Coppertone Quick Tan). This "thing" is then stacked in a steam drawer until needed for sale. I think they make all of these up at the beginning of the season and keep them hot and soggy right through the Michigan game.

You buy one or two and walk over to the condiment table (what a mess those are....a whole other thread) where you try to separate the paper, bun, and frank, so you can apply some of that pale tan mustard of undetermined parentage. NOW THAT'S A DOG!!!!

Schultz makes hot dogs around here that have skins. I never had them before coming to New England. They're best grilled so the skin snaps a bit when bitten into.

Hot-diggety, dog-diggity
BOOM! What you do to me...

If you're ever passing through Westminster, Maryland, drive down Main Street and stop at Harry's. He uses Esskay weiners and puts his own special Coney-Island type sauce on them. Yep, just put the sauce, mustard, ketchup and onions on and you have eatin' pleasure. Esskay is a Baltimore brand made by the Schluderberg and Kurdel Company ("S. K.", get it?). The dogs are also sold in stores and they grill well, but you can't beat Harry's. We call 'em "death dogs" around here due to the heartburn they allegedly invoke.

Lessee . . . what you buy in a grocery store - Blue Jays Ballpark Franks. Do not grill them. Do not BBQ them. Steam them. It is the only way to go. A short session on the BBQ after maybe for the smokiness and grill marks, but ONLY as an afterthought..

I guess my favourite would be those weiners they cook at the Orillia Farmer's Market on Saturday morning. I missed it today, cos I got up too late for it. They're excellent Oktoberfest style sausages, grilled for ya right there on the spot.

And then there's Valdy. He's a black and tan dachshund, a true gentleman of leisure who has mastered the art of doing absolutely nothing to such perfection that he has almost become a sort of stationary art object...except when a stranger arrives. He's terrified of strangers, and launches into a lengthy barking fit when he detects their approach. I guess he is my favourite hotdog.

I used to love to eat hot dogs at baseball games. Then my dad ruined it by telling me this story: There was some labour benefit he was volunteering for years ago, at the H.H.H. Metrodome, and he took a job in the kitchen for the day. As my dad was throwing away unused hotdogs, on buns, the head hot dog guy walks up, and says 'Whoa, what're you doin'?! Those are good hotdogs!' He then proceded to take a dog out of the trash, made an 'ok' sign with his hand, stuck the end of the sausage part in the small 'ok' hole, and pulled the hotdog through it, scraping the bun away. He then threw the meat into a bin of fresh hotdogs. My dad left in disgust, and I've never been back. Yup.

Kramarczuk's in SE Minneapolis has kick-ass sausage, and good hotdogs, too. :)

Well I use to love hot dogs, especially the big knuckers. Something about the smell of a hot dog stand I find so tempting.
Now a days I stick to tofu hot dogs. They are much gentler on the planet and I don't mind thinking about what they are made of.

Tar Heel ... the same thing that your posts back and forth with SandyToes ... nothing. I didn't complain about your's, so please do me the same courtesy. And, besides, I knew darn well that favorite hot dogs had nothing to do with folk music, didn't you? But you still had to take a peek. It's Saturday and it's been a very heavy week on the mudcat and a little lighthearted banter won't hurt.

BTW ... I like your new mudcat name ... I'll be moving to the Tar Heel State in the Spring/early Summer.

Take it from a kid. From the age of three, countless people have tried to trick my now 6 year old into eating their favorite hotdog. He can usually spot an imitation by sight and It never takes more than one bite.
The original?.....Oscar Myer Beef....
Oh, if I were an oscar myer weiner....
That is what I truely want to be...
Cause if I were an Oscar Myer Weiner
Everyone would be in love with me

This is amazing, when I think of a hot dog, I think of some pretty tastless limp sausage in a bun with fried onions and lots of tomato sauce and mustard to give it some taste (there is none in the sausage and they all the same wherever you go). Sounds like I am missing out on something here.

No No No. The absolute, hands down wiener is in Northeast PA, in the Allentown area. If you are here find a Yoccos. Get two or three "all the way" with the mustard, chopped onions, and the chili sauce.
You will be in hot dog heaven and you will never be the same.

I used to live about twenty or so minutes from there--keep in mind here that we're talking about the deli type wieners, that they make themselves--there was plenty of other good stuff too, sausages, Lebanon bologna, smoked pork chops. And pies--but I must confess I never cared for the Shoo Fly Pie--

Most people that don't live there don't know how good that Dutch Country food is--and cheap, too
