Subject: RE: Heavenly Aeroplane From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Sep 00 - 05:18 PM Gee, Pene - I looked all over for that song, and here you find it at a Mudcatter's site (GAZ, who has done a great job collecting lyrics for the Watersons, Martin Carthy, and the Copper Family - (click). John Rutter did a choral arrangement of this song, which is apparently quite popular with church choirs who want to liven things up a bit after Mozart. Can anybody furnish a tune? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Heavenly Aeroplane From: Stewie Date: 23 Sep 00 - 08:11 PM I have this on a New World CD under the title of 'Airplane Ride'. It is sung by Mrs Nell Hampton. It was recorded by Alan Lomax, but the place of recording is noted as 'unknown'. Lomax noted that it is 'a modern Holiness song from eastern Kentucky and of local composition'. He went on to comment: 'One of the thousands of new spirituals created in the new small churches of the Holiness movement, this song has the touch of true folklore in the vivid metaphors of the verse and the gawky charm of the melody'. No doubt, it will be reissued, if it has not been already, in the massive Rounder Lomax collection. The New World CD details are: Various Artists 'The Gospel Ship: Baptist Hymns & White Spirituals from the Southern Mountains' New World 80294-2. It also includes a marvellous version of 'My Lord Keeps a Record' by the Mountain Ramblers from Galax, with Cullen Galyean on banjo. Hopefully, the marvellous recordings of this group by Lomax that were issued in the Southern Folk Heritage Series on Atlantic will see the light of day in the Rounder Lomax Collection in due course. --Stewie.

Subject: RE: Heavenly Aeroplane From: Stewie Date: 23 Sep 00 - 08:54 PM The note by A.L. Lloyd to the Watersons' recording could be at odds with Lomax's comment about its Kentucky origins, given that Randolph collected it 30 years earlier in Oklahoma. --Stewie. |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE HEAVENLY AEROPLANE (J. S. McConnell) From: Dale Rose Date: 28 Sep 00 - 12:38 AM I have added the music for The Heavenly Aeroplane to my Good Old Songs pages. I found it in Gospel Quintet Songs published by Thoro Harris, c. 1928. The version as printed was copyrighted by Harris in 1928, authorship credited to J. S. McConnell. Note that there are FIVE verses as well as minor variations. It is also obviously older than Lomax stated. The Heavenly Aeroplane THE HEAVENLY AEROPLANE (words and music by J. S. McConnell, copyright 1928 by Thoro Harris.) One of these nights just at twelve o'clock This old world's gwin ter reel and rock; Poor sinners will tremble and cry for pain, And the Lord will come in His aeroplane. Chorus Ho, ye weary of ev'ry tribe, Get your ticket for this aeroplane ride. Jesus our Savior is coming to reign, And take us up to glory in His heav'nly aeroplane. You may talk of your rides in your automobiles, Of lightning speed on your motor wheels; We'll break all records as up we fly In an aeroplane joyride thru the sky. Chorus There will be no punctures on muddy roads, No broken axels from overloads, No sparks to trouble or cause delay As we soar in rapture up the Milky Way. Chorus You must needs get ready if you take this ride. Quit all your meanness and humble your pride; You must furnish a light both bright and clean And a vessel of oil to run the machine. Chorus When our journey's done and we all sit down At the marriage feast, with a golden crown, We'll blend our voices with the ransomed throng And repeat His praises as years roll on. This book verifies that it was written at LEAST as far back as 1928. It may well be older than that ~~ added 10/29/00 I just heard from John McConnell, son of the composer, and he gives it a date of 1920. |
Subject: RE: Heavenly Aeroplane From: Dale Rose Date: 28 Sep 00 - 01:12 AM I should have said older than Lomax AND A. L. Lloyd stated. |
Subject: RE: Heavenly Aeroplane From: GUEST,Bill Krouwel Date: 01 Mar 06 - 10:53 AM A.L.Lloyd's notes on the Watersons album that contains "Heavenly Aeroplane" are a little suspect. He cites one song (Sound, Sound) as being by Cornish, when I know that Somerset male voice choirs (from a quite different culture) were singing it right up to the 1970's. Similarly he characterises the tune "Lyngham" (used on the album as the tune for "while Shephers Watched") as obscure-but-good, even though at the time of writing it was probably one of the top five trad. hymn tunes in English Charismatic/evangelical/Pentecostal Churches - not to mention being in the Methodist tune book, listed as the second tune for Charles Wesley's "O for a Thousand Tongues". I think old A.L. had strayed from familiar territory, and was forgiveably floundering when he wrote those liner notes.... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Heavenly Aeroplane (J. S. McConnell) From: GUEST,John C. Munday Date: 30 Nov 10 - 05:38 PM John McConnell says his father, the evangelist John S. McConnell, composed the song about 1925, when the young John was ten years old. John's version is slightly different from the version published with copyright by Thoro Harris in 1928. An image file of the song (music and words) is available. |

(Thanks to Dale Guest for lyrics and sheet music.) I tried to hot link, but a message kept coming up saying the link was broken.
