HEAVENLY AEROPLANE

Oh, one of these days around twelve o'clock
The whole wide world will reel and rock
The sinner will tremble and cry for pain
And the Lord will come in his aeroplane

ch: Oh, you thirsty of every tribe
Get your ticket for an aeroplane ride
Jesus our Saviour is coming to reign
And take you to glory in his aeroplane

Oh, talk of rides in automobiles
Talk of fast times in motor wheels
We'll break all records as we upwards fly
For an aeroplane joy ride in the sky

ch

You must get ready if you take this ride
Leave all your sins and humble your pride
Furnish a lamp both bright and clean
And a vessel of oil to run the machine

ch

When our journey's over and we all sit down
At the marriage supper with a robe and crown
We'll blend our voices with a heavenly throng
And praise our Saviour as the years roll on

ch
repeat ch^^^

Gee, Pene - I looked all over for that song, and here you find it at a Mudcatter's site (GAZ, who has done a great job collecting lyrics for the Watersons, Martin Carthy, and the Copper Family - (click).
John Rutter did a choral arrangement of this song, which is apparently quite popular with church choirs who want to liven things up a bit after Mozart.
Can anybody furnish a tune?

I have this on a New World CD under the title of 'Airplane Ride'. It is sung by Mrs Nell Hampton. It was recorded by Alan Lomax, but the place of recording is noted as 'unknown'. Lomax noted that it is 'a modern Holiness song from eastern Kentucky and of local composition'. He went on to comment: 'One of the thousands of new spirituals created in the new small churches of the Holiness movement, this song has the touch of true folklore in the vivid metaphors of the verse and the gawky charm of the melody'. No doubt, it will be reissued, if it has not been already, in the massive Rounder Lomax collection.

The New World CD details are: Various Artists 'The Gospel Ship: Baptist Hymns & White Spirituals from the Southern Mountains' New World 80294-2. It also includes a marvellous version of 'My Lord Keeps a Record' by the Mountain Ramblers from Galax, with Cullen Galyean on banjo. Hopefully, the marvellous recordings of this group by Lomax that were issued in the Southern Folk Heritage Series on Atlantic will see the light of day in the Rounder Lomax Collection in due course.

The note by A.L. Lloyd to the Watersons' recording could be at odds with Lomax's comment about its Kentucky origins, given that Randolph collected it 30 years earlier in Oklahoma.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE HEAVENLY AEROPLANE (J. S. McConnell)
From: Dale Rose

I have added the music for The Heavenly Aeroplane to my Good Old Songs pages. I found it in Gospel Quintet Songs published by Thoro Harris, c. 1928. The version as printed was copyrighted by Harris in 1928, authorship credited to J. S. McConnell. Note that there are FIVE verses as well as minor variations. It is also obviously older than Lomax stated. The Heavenly Aeroplane
THE HEAVENLY AEROPLANE
(words and music by J. S. McConnell, copyright 1928 by Thoro Harris.)

One of these nights just at twelve o'clock
This old world's gwin ter reel and rock;
Poor sinners will tremble and cry for pain,
And the Lord will come in His aeroplane.

Chorus
Ho, ye weary of ev'ry tribe,
Get your ticket for this aeroplane ride.
Jesus our Savior is coming to reign,
And take us up to glory in His heav'nly aeroplane.

You may talk of your rides in your automobiles,
Of lightning speed on your motor wheels;
We'll break all records as up we fly
In an aeroplane joyride thru the sky.

Chorus

There will be no punctures on muddy roads,
No broken axels from overloads,
No sparks to trouble or cause delay
As we soar in rapture up the Milky Way.

Chorus

You must needs get ready if you take this ride.
Quit all your meanness and humble your pride;
You must furnish a light both bright and clean
And a vessel of oil to run the machine.

Chorus

When our journey's done and we all sit down
At the marriage feast, with a golden crown,
We'll blend our voices with the ransomed throng
And repeat His praises as years roll on.

This book verifies that it was written at LEAST as far back as 1928. It may well be older than that ~~ added 10/29/00 I just heard from John McConnell, son of the composer, and he gives it a date of 1920.

I should have said older than Lomax AND A. L. Lloyd stated.

A.L.Lloyd's notes on the Watersons album that contains "Heavenly Aeroplane" are a little suspect. He cites one song (Sound, Sound) as being by Cornish, when I know that Somerset male voice choirs (from a quite different culture) were singing it right up to the 1970's. Similarly he characterises the tune "Lyngham" (used on the album as the tune for "while Shephers Watched") as obscure-but-good, even though at the time of writing it was probably one of the top five trad. hymn tunes in English Charismatic/evangelical/Pentecostal Churches - not to mention being in the Methodist tune book, listed as the second tune for Charles Wesley's "O for a Thousand Tongues".

I think old A.L. had strayed from familiar territory, and was forgiveably floundering when he wrote those liner notes....

Though I haven't touched that site in several years, it is still there anytime I think to check it out.

My name is Mary Giran

I would like to know if any one can sing any inspirational song by Thoro Harris?
I have a songbook, the cover page published by E.A.K. Hackett.
Gospel Quintet Songs, published by Thoro Harris.
I cannot seem to find too much about Thoro Harris and his music.
Please let me know if the cover page goes to the gospel quintet songs.

Thank you

Hmmm. I did read a bio of Thoro Harris somewhere. I'll see if I can find it. I don't think I have the Gospel Quintet Songbook anymore, it is out on long term loan to musician friends who are making better use of it than I ever could.

I'll check back on the bio.

Never could remember past the first verse and chorus.

Thanks guys, alot.

Nobody has mentioned that there was a version recorded somewhere sung by Helen Watson and Linda Adams. Heard it on Folk on Two in the Jim Lloyd days.

Artisan sang this song at what they caled "The God Spot" at Whitchurch Festival some years ago and it went down a bomb with the congregation many of them asked when they would sing it again. I see that there is some talk of them reforming - if they sing this then its about time

John McConnell says his father, the evangelist John S. McConnell, composed the song about 1925, when the young John was ten years old. John's version is slightly different from the version published with copyright by Thoro Harris in 1928. An image file of the song (music and words) is available.

After more discussion today with John and Anna McConnell (John is 95 and living in Denver), I correct the previous post -- the song was composed by his father in Walla Walla, WA, about 1920, when John was five years old.

John, we have another thread which John McConnell posted to a couple of times in 2000, giving us that information, which has not previously beenmentioned on this thread. thread.cfm?threadid=589

Thanks for posting! When you talk to him next, tell him how much we enjoyed his visits. Also, my sixth grade class participated in a town cleanup for the very first Earth Day. That was a good while ago.

If you go to YouTube and search for Heavenly Aeroplane, you will find lots of videos, from which you can learn it.

The Heavenly Aeroplane
www.bobnolan-sop.net/.../01%20Heavenly%20Aeroplane%20(Jan)/..."Heavenly Aeroplane", published as a Bob Nolan song in Bob Nolan's Folio of Original Cowboy Classics No .... (Thanks to Dale Guest for lyrics and sheet music.)

I tried to hot link, but a message kept coming up saying the link was broken. If you Google

The Heavenly Aeroplane, it's presently about eight sites down on the page that opens. The site has music notation (original) for the songs. There is also an explanation of it being copyrighted to both McConnell and Nolan.
