Subject: Cars 'n' Guitars From: GUEST,Roger the skiffler Date: 26 Sep 00 - 09:18 AM I've just unearthed a cutting from a Sunday supplement article about classic cars that probably falls into the "pretentious-moi?" category but might amuse or start an unacrimonious discussion: "Elvis's first Cadillac shared some of the same aesthetic as a semi-acoustic Gretsch. A Chevy Belair hints at a Beale Street Gibson. ...a '55 Corvette is a Fender Stratocaster...a '64 T-Bird, a Rickenbacker..." I suppose a '40s Martin would be an old pickup truck and a '20s National steel a Model T Ford? RtS |

I don't know about store-bought geetars, but the *biscuit board* electric my daddy made went real well with the 1953 Studebaker we all rode around in when I was just little. Any offers? An A40 might do at a pinch! Steve |

Subject: RE: BS: Cars 'n' Guitars From: Jim the Bart Date: 26 Sep 00 - 01:39 PM Ditto on the Dano and Nash. How about an Ovation and one of the new faux-VW Bugs. I can see the Ad slogan now - "Almost like the real thing, ONLY BETTER!" Personally, I would like a simple pre-war Martin D18 and an old Panel Truck (A Woodie, like the surfers used to drive - not very cherry, just an oldie but a goodie) or a Candy-colored Telecaster and matching ragtop corvette stingray (not the new penile design, the old 60's look, thank you very much). |
Subject: RE: BS: Cars 'n' Guitars From: Giac Date: 26 Sep 00 - 02:37 PM I have a 1950s Guild and an '89 Nissan Sentra. All three of us have heavy cosmetic damage, and have gone more than 140,000 miles. The two of them are easy to tune, in register and don't rattle. ~;o)

Subject: RE: BS: Cars 'n' Guitars From: WyoWoman Date: 26 Sep 00 - 06:18 PM Omigawd,Spaw. Does it run? I'll be right up ... er ... over ... er, over and out .... I love those cars. Mine wasn't a Landau. White over red, black interior. It was the coolest car I've ever owned, except for the slight problem of the battery boiling over after a few miles and the electric windows getting stuck up when it was hot and down when it was raining. It had a completely rebuilt engine (397 I believe, eight-cylinder) that would pass anything on the road except a gas station. I got it up to 120 mph a couple of times just because I could and I wanted to see what it felt like. It felt like 60 mph in that wonderful machine. If I can find the photo, I'll email you a picture of it (is that obsessive?) (like I care...)So, do you have a guitar that'll make me sound like Fielding? ww |
Subject: RE: BS: Cars 'n' Guitars From: bill\sables Date: 26 Sep 00 - 06:31 PM mousethief, the Reliant Robin is also a plastic car. It has only three wheels and can be driven on a motorbike licence. And both are very hard to sell second hand. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cars 'n' Guitars From: richlmo Date: 26 Sep 00 - 11:12 PM My first "real guitar " was an Epiphone I bought from my buddy "Moose" and I bought a used fastback Opal about the same time. Subject: RE: BS: Cars 'n' Guitars From: WyoWoman Date: 26 Sep 00 - 11:20 PM My very first car was an Opal Cadet (Kadette? seems it started with a K...) in 1968 and it was old when my Dad got it for me. It was such a cute little car until the brakes went out and I slammed into the back of a brand new Buick Riviera. The guy jumped out, crying and said, "It had 8 miles on it. I was driving it home from the dealership..." And I had JUST had the brakes fixed ... I did not own a guitar at that time, but my roommate had a Guild. I think that's a match ... ww |
Subject: RE: BS: Cars 'n' Guitars From: richlmo Date: 26 Sep 00 - 11:29 PM Those Opal's were pretty tough. I think I put about 35,000 miles on that one without changing the oil! I kept wrecking it and having to replace the driver's side door. Nothing else ever got damaged. Weird! The epiphone took a pretty good beating , too. |

Subject: RE: BS: Cars 'n' Guitars From: Ely Date: 26 Sep 00 - 11:47 PM My mom has a 1971 Guild F-30 and had either a Chevelle or a Toyota Karina (Carina? Dang, I know how to spell Opel Kadet). I'm not seeing a match there, though. Maybe the Chevelle. The Toyota was tinny but that model was rare in the US. In the true spirit of 1970's Japanese cars, it finally got so rusted out and my dad did a load of bodywork on it. It went around in primer for awhile until my uncle was embarrassed when we came to visit and threatened to paint it windows and all if my dad didn't get busy and mask it (uncle owns a sign shop and paints tour buses for Atlantic City). Hmm, the Guild has a repaired back--maybe it's a Toyota after all. |

It would climb walls and convert into a motel room at the flip of a switch! (Just kidding...a little less well-appointed than a motel room...but you get the idea.)

Subject: RE: BS: Cars 'n' Guitars From: Jim the Bart Date: 27 Sep 00 - 09:45 AM Wyo Woman - Those Opals seem to have bad stories attached to them. I had just bought one (after not owning a car for about three years) when I got into a disastrous wreck. Some girl ran a light while I was turning left. The car was totalled, I busted my guild D44M (Curly maple sides and back, since repaired by the good folks at the Old Town School), and broke my jaw. And I got nailed for the accident - I was turning and hadn't gottne my insurance yet. I paid $500 for the car (a lot of dough for a full-time folkie in 1972) and drove it for less than a week. |
Subject: RE: BS: Cars 'n' Guitars From: Steve Latimer Date: 27 Sep 00 - 10:10 AM The body of the Gibson Firebird was designed by an automotive stylist. Mister has a Washburn and a Jeep Cherokee. (Yes, we each have a red Cherokee.)But he really wants a cool old truck, like a Willys, or a PT Cruiser. Actually I want the PT Cruiser... |

I've got a 1996 Volvo 850 wagon and a Running Dog sycamore & spruce acoustic. Or maybe it's the Epiphone Dot that matches the car*, or the telecaster model (Samick Ray Benson -- curly maple capped body & three pickups -- not a real tele), or the 1942 Martin, or the 1943 Orpheum archtop (made by Kay). Whatever, it isn't the Valco-era National "solid-body" with the 22" scale and the blue house-paint finish. That one matches my sister's first car, a 1954 Chevy two-door.
