Subject: What's a cookie? and other mysteries From: GUEST,Kit Date: 26 Sep 00 - 07:24 PM Despite being of an age where I should, I don't understand some of the jargon involved in this business. What's a cookie? Also, how does one personal message someone? Doesn't really matter now, but in 2 weeks I'm going to uni at York, and want to take advantage of the unlimited internet access. Lastly, and most importantly, how do I stop being a guest? Do I have to register or something? Please, someone who is technologically minded, help. Cheers, Kit |
Subject: RE: Help: What's a cookie? and other mysteries From: IvanB Date: 26 Sep 00 - 07:44 PM Kit, a 'cookie' is a bit of information placed on your computer by an internet site for various purposes - most are benign, but there have been some uses which many consider invasions of privacy. When you become a member of Mudcat (click on 'Membership' above), the system places a cookie on your hard disk which identifies you to the system as a member each time you log on. To my knowledge, that's the only use Mudcat makes of cookies. When you become a member, you will no longer carry the 'Guest' appellation, as long as your cookie remains intact. I suggest you read the Mudcat FAQ - Newcomer's Guide thread to learn about the many advantages of membership, including access to the Personal Message area. If you choose to join, welcome aboard. If not, you'll still find this one of the best sites going for assistance on all things musical and, especially, folk and blues. And, if you join, be sure to read the instructions for resetting your cookie. Since it's stored on your local computer, you may need to reset it if you're using a different computer at uni. |
Subject: RE: Help: What's a cookie? and other mysteries From: CarolC Date: 26 Sep 00 - 08:41 PM Kit, I got your e-mail address, but I am told you won't be there for 2 weeks. You have to join in order to send and recieve personal messages. When you do that, you can reset your cookie for whatever computer you are on, unless the people who own the computer won't let you. I am logged onto a computer in one of my school's computer labs right now. First time I did that! You have to remember to log out again when you are done, or someone will have access to your cookie. Protect your cookie at all costs. Carol |
Subject: RE: Help: What's a cookie? and other mysteries From: Jon Freeman Date: 26 Sep 00 - 08:49 PM Don't forget that you may not be able to set a cookie at the uni. I can not log on at the college I am at. Jon |

Subject: RE: Help: What's a cookie? and other mysteries From: GUEST,Kit Date: 27 Sep 00 - 06:19 PM Carol, glad you got my address. As soon as I get to York (the uni I'm going to) I'll try and join so we can get some personal messages going. If I can't, it'll possibly be a bit difficult, but we could send stuff through Skipjack. Anyway, as soon as I know whether I can do technical things with cookies at uni, I'll let you know. Speak to you soon, Kit |
Subject: RE: Help: What's a cookie? and other mysteries From: CarolC Date: 27 Sep 00 - 07:47 PM Hi Kit. Most (probably all) colleges and universities set up private e-mail accounts for their students. So even if you can't send personal messages through the Mudcat, you should be able to send and recieve e-mails at the address that Skipjack gave me. I'll have him keep me posted about when you will be arriving at school, and I'll send you an e-mail timed to get there around the same time you do. Good luck with your preparations for school. Carol |
Subject: RE: Help: What's a cookie? and other mysteries From: GUEST,Kit Date: 28 Sep 00 - 07:08 AM Hi Carol, yes, I will be able to send and receive e-mails at uni. I'm there from Sunday the 8th of October, so if you want to send me one around that time that'd be great. Thanks for thinking of me - trying to plough through my reading list but I keep getting distracted by the box! Do you play the Louis Waltz ever? Skipjack gave me the music this week, and it's a really sweet tune, nearly up there with Kate Martin for me. Also, just got your e-mail address from Skipjack, so you can expect a message soon. See you shortly, Kit

Subject: RE: Help: What's a cookie? and other mysteries From: GUEST,Kit Date: 28 Sep 00 - 05:55 PM Hi Bill, thanks for that message. I'm going to hold you to that one - as you know, had a search for sessions in York a while back, and that sounded good. I'll probably be there Wednesday 11th October, without accordion at first but it will come. I'll be the short girl grinning madly at the live music. Cheers, Kit |
Subject: RE: Help: What's a cookie? and other mysteries From: GUEST,Kit again Date: 28 Sep 00 - 05:57 PM As for Skipjack, think he'll be a little busy what with the new employment of Mrs S, but I'll try my best to persuade him. |
