Subject: Moleskin trousers From: WyoWoman Date: 28 Sep 00 - 01:00 AM In several songs, (e.g. "Schooldays Over" and "The Leaboys' Lassie") I've seen reference to putting on the moleskin trousers or men who wear moleskin trousers... Is this symbolic of men who work in the coalmines or laborers in general, or ??? Also, what is White Stocking Day? (in "Bold Riley," for instance...)? ww |

Subject: RE: Help: Moleskin trousers From: Naemanson Date: 28 Sep 00 - 05:41 AM What is moleskin anyway? Obviously it isn't the tanned hides of moles. Several songs mention it such as Jez Lowe's Black Diamonds but I had never heard of moleskin trousers before that. |

Subject: RE: Help: Moleskin trousers From: Liz the Squeak Date: 28 Sep 00 - 08:12 PM You can still get moleskin trousers. It's a very fine, close weave pile fabric like velvet, so called because it was usually black and resembled the coat of the mole. It serves no other purpose that I'm aware of, than keeping your bum warm and giving you something to put your pockets in. It's soft and smooth, doesn't snag easily and can absorb a fair amount of moisture before your arse gets wet. They don't like the tumbledryer. |

Subject: RE: Help: Moleskin trousers From: GUEST,Gervase Date: 29 Sep 00 - 07:25 AM I'm very fond of my moleskins - they're cherry red, and my daughter will not walk within 20 yards of me when I'm wearing them! Honestly, when I think of some of the stuff she wears... The fabric is as tough as old boots and wonderfully warm - much more so than corduroy. I've also got a pair of goose-shit green moleskin breeks which are perfect when you're out in the cuds. |

Subject: RE: Help: Moleskin trousers From: GUEST,David Robertson Date: 29 Sep 00 - 08:12 AM White Stocking Day occurs in many nautical songs. It's the day on which the sailors' wives, sweethearts or significant others went down to the shipping office to collect the men's half-pay which had been assigned to them (if they were lucky!) This was an occasion for dressing up in their Sunday best, including white stockings. |

Subject: RE: Help: Moleskin trousers From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 29 Sep 00 - 08:23 AM Moleskin isn't just for trousers. Shirts, weskits, caps - you could dress like a mole all over if you liked. A much friendlier fabric than denim, but it never seesm to have the same vogue. Maybe the name worries people.
Real moleskin has been used for gloves and weskits, by professional molecatchers. But you'd need an awful lot of moles for a pair of trousers. |

Subject: RE: Help: Moleskin trousers From: IanC Date: 29 Sep 00 - 08:25 AM "Moleskins" (originally) really are just that. As a teenager (1920s), my father-in-law used to trap moles and send the skins in to be made into trousers. For some reason the skins don't need to be cured. They are very soft and hard wearing so were used by people (e.g. miners) who had to work on their knees for long periods. Latterly, "moleskin" has come to mean a kind of velvety jeans cloth. Probably because of the texture which is velvety like a mole's skin.
Cheers! |
