This is a cool site! I wonder if anyone knows where I can find Galician tunes and songs. My band wants to add some to our Celtic repertoire. Thanks!

We had a recent discussion of Susana Seivane, thanks to Roger in Sheffield. This link will direct you to another discussion as well. As many of our threads do, it branches off into talking about other Galician musicians, too. No doubt someone who knows a whole lot more than I do will stop by and add their take on the matter.

Gracie, you can get some good Spanish tunes right here. Some are Galician, some are not. I can tell you right away though that the Aires de Pontevedra and A Bruxa are Galician tunes.

Galicia, pronounced "Ga-LEETH-eeya", is a region of northern Spain inhabited by Spanish Celts (Galicians), of the same Brythonic strain as the French Celts, the Bretons.

Galicians are the ones that lisp - an affectation aquired after one of the kings had a natural lisp and copying it was considered the thing to do (if you wanted to suck up to the royal family....). Catalans do not lisp, they are the ones who have the red and yellow striped flags and call it BarSelona rather than Barthelona - Manuel from Fawlty Towers was never a Catalan, he lisped.

Sheffield City Giants do several Catalan tunes whilst dancing their giants, if you ever get the chance to see them perform, do, and tell Tim to answer his E mail occasionally!!

All the above is true unless you are speaking of the other Galicia, which is now part of Poland.

You could do worse than check out recordings by the Galician polyphonic and panderetas group Ialma. If you cannot locate information, PM me and I'll get it for you and also information on other Galician song groups.
