I think the greatest, most sensitive and memorable song from East Side Story was "Beulah"....

BEULAH

Beulah
The most beautiful sound I've ever heard
Beulah
The most beautiful sound in the world in a single word
Beulah
BEULAH! BEULAH! BEULAH! I've just met a girl named Beulah
And suddenly that name will never be the same to me
Beulah
I've just kissed a girl named Beulah
And suddenly that name will never be the same to me
BEULAH!!!
Say it loud, it's like buzzards winging
Say it soft, it's like telephones ringing
I'll never stop singing...BEULAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Oh man LH, you don't know how funny this is to me! We have a town near here called Beulahville, which we INSIST on pronoucing "Bay-yoolah-ville". It's the ATV capital of Eastern North Carolina. You can't drive 100 feet in that place without seeing some chunky good ol' boys (kids) crashing across the corn & cotton & soybean field stubble. It's also the home of many chicken farms, so...

BAY--YOO--LAH-Lah-lah-lah! I'll never stop seeeengeeeng!

or my favorite, the theme song of the Irish-American gang of Juvenile delinquents...

When You're a Shit

When you're a Shit you're a guy in demand
From the holes in your shoes to the grime on your hands
When you're a Shit you are never passe'
Though you break into dance you're too tough to be gay

Oh, great, CR. You made me spew MGD all over my keyboard. Some might say this is what I get for drinking MGD, but hey. It was here and so am I.

I feel shitty, oh, so shitty
That the city should fall to its kneeees
A committee ... should be organized to cheer up meeee

See that ugly gril in the mirror there
(which, what, where, whom?)
Who can that repulsive girl be?
Such a dopey face, such a flaccid smile, such a triple chin, such a shitty meeeeeee

There's a couch for us
Somewhere a couch for us
Naugahyde or an overstuffed chair
Wait for us somewhere
Hold my beer and my underwear
Hold my socks and we're halfway there
Somewhere,somehow
We'll find a floor that's less grungy
A color TV and some munchies
Wait for us somewhere
Here's some wine for us!
Some cheese and wine for us!
Some Ritz crackers and a pizza slice
Heat it up till the cheese is nice!
Some couch!
Some beer!
Some where!

Okay, I'll bite--is there actually an "East Side Story" (other than the 60's Mad Magazine parody, which had a Cold War theme), or are you all just making this up on the spot?

Well, of course there is...have we ever been less than truthful to you, Gary?

East Side Story was the original musical, written by Don Martini, an obscure playwright from Schenectady. It chronicled the adventures of some lower middle class airhead type teenagers in a suburb of Schenectady in the late 50's, and their attempts to deal with love, lust, school, social angst, and acne. The heroine was named Beulah, and the hero was named Wilberforce. Beulah and Wilberforce fall in love despite the fact that their parents belong to different lodges...one family is in the Lions Club and the other is in the Loyal Order of Moose. This, of course, leads to tragic and ultimately fatal circumstances, but I don't want to spoil it by telling you too much.

For some unfathomable reason this brilliant musical went nowhere on Broadway or anywhere else...BUT...it did inspire a lacklustre imitation shortly afterward, which we all know as West Side Story. Such is life.

Ha! Ha! I figured you wouldn't be able to resist posting to this thread, Hespy.

I am truly gratified that the Mudcat crew are helping me in unearthing the superb songs from East Side Story. We may yet get it on Broadway where it belongs...and vindicate Don Martini at last. I personally know his surviving sons, Fester and Karbunkle Martini, and they are very happy about the whole thing.

....DAWWWWK!

But there's also a serious movie titled East Side Story, which is a documentary about the genre of Soviet girl-loves-boy-loves-tractor propaganda musicals in the 40's and 50's.

Didn't Stephen Soundbite write the lyrics? The music by Dullard Beerstein was an important part of it, not to mention Jibboom Throbbins' choreography.
