My grandmother said something similiar: "It's always better to push a pencil" than to work in the mines like her husband and everyone else around.

Like everything else, it's true and not true at the same time.

As a 60+ year-old the only advice that I can remember being given before I was 18 was from a black-smith, my uncle, who said "Get a job that does'nt get your hands dirty" - thats a translation what he actually said was "git a joab that disna git heants diarty". I followed his advice and have enjoyed my work all my life.

Oh what's the point. No matter what you tell them, they will go their own way, make their own mistakes and hopefully learn from them or not depending on how hard headed they are. As we all did. So the best advice:
"Learn from your mistakes"

My son received a little red plaid book for his 18th birthday. I think it's called "Life's Little Rule Book". I will have to look. It covers all of the above and more and sells in paperback for about $5.

Banjer - Mr. Hankey? Is he related to South Park's Mr. Hankey or just an unfortunate coincidence?

How about a copy of "If". I always liked the line "If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you..."

Guest must not remember that they did lower the drinking age to the go out and die for you country age (18, which was actually lower that the draft age, which was 18 and 6 months) and they got tired of kids going out, getting drunk, and killing themselves and others--and raised the drinking age up again--

Anyway, these days, no one gets drafted into the Army, and they don't really even want the average drunken 18 year-old--they prefer older, better educated types--they don't want anyone who isn't as smart as the smart bombs

You cannot achieve the impossible without attempting the absurd. -- ???

I want to live my life so that my nights are full of regrets. -- Fitzgerald (F. Scott?)

On a more realistic level: If you're a U.S. citizen, I would lobby all my friends and get the drinking age changed to 18 nationwide. It makes no sense that at 18 you can be involuntarily pressed into the service of your country to risk your life for whatever special interest the President and Congress deem appropriate, but you can't walk into a bar and legally buy a beer.

That or raise the mandatory age for draft registration to 21.

My mom's words of wisdom for the parents of eighteen year olds is "just because they tell you they're not listening doesn't mean that they didn't hear you say it."

My own take on this, recently, to a nineteen year old nephew, is that the difference between nineteen and forty isn't intelligence, it's experience. The forty year old has already pulled that dumb stunt and remembers how not to do it again.

At least, most forty year olds. [grin]

Be yourself, and you will have no competition. Just try to get closer and closer to that essence.

Super Grover (from Sesame Street) once flew to the rescue of a little girl in a zoo. when she wanted to leave, she only saw the fence and no way to get out. Super Grover obliged her by taking the next half an hour to bend the bars of the gate to let her out. As he did this, she found the sign that said, "EXIT" and thanked 'ol Supe as she left. By the time Super Grover was done sweating over the bars, she was gone...

The moral is: We must trust God for the impossible, like providing a way out of a jam for us... But we must not expect God to do the possible... We must do what is possible (read the sign) before asking Him to bend the bars...

That last comes from my parents. A Chinese man was carrying his old father on his back in a large basket, when his young son saw him and asked what he was doing. The man said, "Your grandfather is old and feeble and blind, and his life is no good to him or anyone else any more. As an act of filial kindness, I am carrying him to the river, where I will let him drown and put him out of his misery. I hope this doesn't distress you too much, son." The son replies, "That's fine, father. Save the basket."
