Subject: Buffy St Marie - Ananais, ... From: CBjames Date: 01 Oct 00 - 10:57 PM Ananais, Ananais Tell me say What kind of man my Jesus is I think this was on the first album she did. I don't suppose anybody else out there remembers it better than I do ? Oh Lord it's hard to be fifty - when yer perfuct in every way. Furst the body goes and then the mind - or maybe the other way around. Still it's a lovely song. And Atheist that I am, I still love belting out spirituals. Know the words? Share them?

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ananias (Buffy Sainte-Marie) From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Sep 09 - 03:39 AM Now, I wonder what Ananias she's talking about. The one I know of, is in Chapter 5 of Acts, known as a liar. He and his wife pledged to sell their home and give the proceeds to the common good of the Christian community, but they held back part of the profits and were struck dead for their deception. Makes you wonder what Buffy's back-story is for this song. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ananias (Buffy Sainte-Marie) From: bubblyrat Date: 29 Sep 09 - 05:43 AM For me,Buffy was the one person who had the greatest influence on me,musically that is.I bought a LP record in,I think ,1967,featuring such joys as Piney Wood Hills,Groundhog, and Many a Mile : I decided there & then that I wanted to play guitar like she (and "Daddy Bones") did.I guess I'm still trying---I am currently learning "Here in California",which is just the kind of song Buffy could have written if Kate Wolf hadn't ! Can't say I recall the song "Ananias" 'though.....must be gettin' old ! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ananias (Buffy Sainte-Marie) From: cetmst Date: 29 Sep 09 - 07:38 AM In The Buffy Sainte-Marie Songbook it is 'Ananais' and on the preceding page 'Ananais, a gospel song'. On that upper right hand corner spot where muusic acknowledgement is given it says Arrangement, New Words and Music by Buffy Sainte-Marie, suggesting there is an earlier poem or song. Googling using the Ananais spelling brings up a mere 193,000 entries. I'm sure some Mudcatter with more basic knowledge, time and patience than I have will answer Joe's question. - Charles |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ananias (Buffy Sainte-Marie) From: GUEST Date: 29 Sep 09 - 09:00 AM There are three men named Ananias in the book of Acts. One, along with his wife Sapphira, held back part of a gift to the church so his name became a synonym for liar. The second was the follower of Christ who lifted the scales from the apostle Paul's eyes. The third was a high priest opposed to the Christians. I always assumed the Ananias in the song was the second one and that the singer was the Apostle Paul asking the questions, but that is just my opinion. Google reveals that Ananias was also the Greek name of Shaddrack of firey furnace fame in the book of Daniel. - Phil |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ananias (Buffy Sainte-Marie) From: cetmst Date: 30 Sep 09 - 06:50 AM In The Buffy Sainte-Marie Songbook the spelling is 'Ananais' and it noted as a gospel song. On the right upper corner where musical acknowledgment is Arrangement, New Words and Music by Buffy Sainte-Marie. The words are certainly consistent with what Paul (Saul) would ask of Ananias at the time of his conversion. Where can the original song be found? - Charles |
