Local Radio Folk Programmes

As I scan through the list, I am listening to Folkwaves produced by BBC Radio Derby and relayed via several other BBC Local Radio Stations in the East Midlands. How many other parts of the UK have regular Folk programmes on their local radio stations? Also, what is the situation across the Big Pond? Sapper

Sapper,
BBC Radio Berkshire has "Irish Eye" with Henry Wymbs on Sunday afternoons 2-5pm. It's all Irish with a lot of Dubliner's, Furey, Dublin City Ramblers etc.

Don't forget Mudcat Radio on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm Eatern Time US. Can't get any more local than our own little spot here in cyberspace.

Cornwall & Devon have John the Fish every Sunday evening 6pm includes a diary listing of clubs and performers.

Radio Scotland....810khz MW, audible but noisy in winter down to English midlands, ok at night. Their Celtic connection which is on 2 - 3 times a week, something like 9pm to midnight is really good. The also have loads of other related progs. RTE...567khz, audible over most of UK. Sat night 9.15 - 10 ish, Ceilidh House....brilliant. Sun 8.10am - 8.50 ish...songs, poems, stories, music...very good. Also loads of related progs. R.Lancs 95.1mhz (or95.5mhz, I'm not sure which) Thurs 8 - 9pm. R. Merseyside (don't know freq) Thurs 7 - 8pm I think. There's loads more, just tune around! John

I can get a couple. The Radio Shropshire (96 FM) show on a Sunday night (which I think is broadcast across the West Midlands), and John and Yvonne Hart do a good show on a Monday on Radio Maldwyn (700 & something on AM, although I think you have to live in the back of beyond to get it).

Re: Radio Maldwyn, it's audible in S Manchester, but not brilliantly. If you have a decent receiver with a decent (outside) aerial, it's fine. I can hear it on my car radio depending on the time of year. Propogation at that frequency (738khz I think) varies tremendously with time of day / year. If you have problems with interference from stations on the same frequency, it may be possible to 'null out' the offending station if you have a DECENT portable radio which will have an internal directional aerial. To help with medium wave reception, keep your radio well away from TVs and computers, better still make sure they're switched off. The amount of radio frequency crud they generate is phenomenal (and often illegal). If you ever get over to Britanny, there is a local FM station playing loads of celtic / breton stuff nearly all the time. I loved it. My kids weren't too keen! Good luck, and good listening. John

Keep track of BrodcastEurope.com and BrodcastAmerica.com. These companies put local radio onto the net, so you can hear those hard to get local stations where ever you are.
