Subject: Mummer's Dance-not McKennitt'sversion From: GUEST,clare.brett@home.com Date: 03 Oct 00 - 01:16 AM I'm looking for a song called the Mummer's Dance. I'm told it is a maritime song maybe English celtic - definately not the one Loreena McKennitt wrote. I've had a number of requests for it at various gigs and would like to learn it. |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Mummer's Dance-not McKennitt' From: MMario Date: 03 Oct 00 - 09:02 AM google brought up 160 hits; 159 of them loreena's. one (that I can't get to, but suspect is mislabled) is at roswell.fortunecity.com/borley/382/wheel.html - that is shown as traditional english. Maybe someone can look at it and see if it is loreena's. I suspect it is, despite the "trad" label.

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Mummer's Dance-not McKennitt' From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 03 Oct 00 - 09:15 AM Loreena McKennitt's song was based on a traditional English song, often called May Day Carol, which was found pretty much throughout the country in a number of different versions. It turns up in American variants, too. Here are two examples on the DT: May Day Carol May Day Carol (2) I'm not aware of any traditional songs called "Mummer's Dance" (especially not maritime ones), so I rather suspect that we're not going to get terribly far without some more information. On the other hand, Poor Old Horse was occasionally published as "Mummer's Song". There is a short discussion in a thread from last year, here: Poor Old Horse (Mummers' Song) There is also another, quite separate song with the same title, which is a sailor's song, though it has no immediate connection with mumming. Have a look at it, here (2 versions): Poor Old Horse The Dead Horse Let us know if any of this is any help. Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Mummer's Dance-not McKennitt' From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 03 Oct 00 - 09:38 AM I found the missing Google hit by looking at their cached copy: one verse from the "May Day Carol" is quoted; it's one of several that Loreena McKinnitt (or however she spells it -I've seen so many versions in the course of searching that I'm now thoroughly confused) put wholesale into her song, which presumably accounts for the title. The rest of that page is fanciful neo-pagan stuff; therefore a dead end. Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Mummer's Dance-not McKennitt' From: GUEST,Trevor Date: 03 Oct 00 - 01:22 PM Could this be 'Rise Up Jock' - Mr Fox I think? If it is I have the lyrics. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Mummer's Dance-not McKennitt' From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 03 Oct 00 - 02:47 PM That's a possibility, of course; it's in the DT, here: Rise Up Jock though the words have been a bit mangled and it's not credited to Bob Pegg, who wrote it slightly before he started Mr.Fox. The trouble is, there's so much that could be what Clare is looking for that we really need her to come back and comment on what has been suggested so far, so that we can at least eliminate non-starters.
