Despite Alan saying it was posted, the Scotsman's Kilt has come up again.

It doesn't seem to be at either of the MIDI locations, either the Mudcat MIDI's here at Mudcat, or Alan's MIDI pages here at Mudcat. Strange.

Wonder if it was deleted for some reason?

Re. Tam Lin. The DT text is indeed a transcription from the Fairport Convention record, though it contains some mistakes. It isn't a traditional text, but a modern, very condensed, and extensively anglicised, re-write of Child 39A: which was originally printed in James Johnson's Scots Musical Museum, vol. V, 1796, no. 411 pp. 423-5; "communicated by Robert Burns". The tune used is not the one given in SMM; I don't know where they got it, but I think it was extensively altered from its traditional form, whatever that might have been. The chances are that it doesn't belong traditionally to this ballad at all; certainly there is no obvious resemblance to any of the examples in Bronson or the few others found more recently.

The tune with the DT file is the one to which Bert Lloyd sang the song; Frankie Armstrong and others got it from him. It's a mystery why it's been attached to a text very different from Lloyd's (which was also a modern re-write). Mind you, it's also a mystery where Lloyd's tune came from, though it does sound familiar from somewhere or other. Perhaps he took it from another song and forgot to say. The other DT file, incidentally, (TAMLIN) is an even more bogus collation (from a textual point of view) though the tune with it may be based on a genuine traditional one. Too tired just now to try to disentangle it.

This song was written out with harmonies in the book. I am guessing that the tune is in the upper voice, since I have never actually heard anyone sing this song.

There are quite a lot of duplicate files in the DT, but I hadn't spotted that one when I made the midi and added lyric corrections in the thread Tune Add: Missing DT tunes - Part NINE.

The thread we're in now was really meant for posting tunes to (abc format), while the other series was for notifications of tunes dealt with and related notes and corrections. In order not to duplicate effort, we might usefully return to that arrangement. Quite a few tunes in the current "missing" list have been dealt with, and listed there: and many of them added to the midi pages in the mean time.

"The Old Miner" is in Mudcat MIDIs here. This song is actually in the DT twice, once as OLD COAL MINER,
filename[ OLDCOALM, and the other as OLD MINER, filename[ OLDMINER. I don't know if songs ever get deleted from the DT, but in this case it might be considered, since (in my opinion) these two hardly qualify as two different versions, but rather two different transcriptions of basically the same song, OLD COAL MINER being the better one. At any rate it is the one that makes best sense, and is closest to Roy Palmer's Songs of the Midlands (1972), which seems to be the original source for the song (also apparantly the source of the MIDI); but the most common form of the title (there and elsewhere) seems to be "The Old Miner".

MMario, I just posted (today) the tune for "Singin' With The Big Choir" in ABC format, since you folks have been experiencing technical difficulties that so far have prevented my MIDI being posted. Please note that the MIDI is much better, since it includes the back-up vocals, trumpet and banjo parts. But if I did the ABC code right, it should show the BASIC tune.

And here comes another one: Elf Call by Steeleye Span. I couldn't find an existing thread for it, so I am posting it here. Steeleye Span does a somewhat elaborate arrangement where some of the words are sung by different voices, with plenty of harmonisation, so I have decided to make a simplified version based on my source (the songbook mentioned below).

2641 ON ONE APRIL MORNING

This was recorded by June Tabor on Aleyn, 1997, Topic TSCD 490, where it is called simply APRIL MORNING. The words are substantially the same as (but slightly fewer than) the version in DT.

APRIL MORNING

'Twas on one April morning just as the sun was rising
'Twas on one April morning, I heard the small birds sing
They were singing Lovely Nancy, for love it is a fancy,
Sweet were the notes that I heard the small birds sing.

For young men are false and are full of all deceiving
Young men are false and they never will prove true
For they're roaming and they're ranging, and their minds are ever changing,
They are seeking for to find out some other girl that's new.

Oh, if I had but my own heart in keeping,
Oh, if I had but my own heart back again
Safe in my bosom I would lock it up forever
And it should wander never so far from me again.

Why must you spend all your long time in courting?
Why must you spend all your long time in vain?
For I don't intend to marry; I would rather longer tarry
Young men, don't you spend all your single life in vain.

(repeat first verse)

3495 TRAINS OF WATERLOO

This is the tune sung by June Tabor and Lesley Davies on the Oranges and Lemmings CD. There are many 'Plains of Waterloo's, and there is no information on the CD as which this is based on, but it closely resembles the first half of 2773 PLAINS OF WATERLOO (1) , and may be the tune for that also. Or not.

1791 ISABEL MAKES LOVE

Thackray's actual title is the first line of the song: i.e. ISOBEL MAKES LOVE UPON NATIONAL MONUMENTS. (note Isobel with'o', not 'a').
The DT text has many minor differences from the 1972 Thackray recording I have, but no more than might be expected from a live performance.

Only two real errors are apparent: Wordsworth would be po-faced, and it's ticks in her National Trust catalogues, not dicks (although the ticks obviously do refer to dicks!).

As for place names there is no 'u' in the Forth Bridge, but there is an 'e' in Wembley, and I think the Cenotaph usually has a capital letter.

Tune (abc) for The Magpie (Dave Dodds) added to Magpie thread (285).

Words for Tony Rose's version of Young Hunting added to the tune (abc) that I posted (last version has the HTML correct!) in the Young Hunting thread (40615).

By the way - if you're going to put words to the tune, it would be nice if they were the right words. In 1905 JOY OF LIVING, all the place-names in the DT version are wrong. Here's a corected version of verse 1:

Farewell you northern hills, you mountains all goodbye
Moorland and stony ridges, crags and peaks goodbye
Glyder Fach farewell, Coulbeag, Scafell, cloud bearing Suilven
Sun warmed rock and the cold of Bleaklow's frozen sea
The snow and the wind and the rain of hills and mountains
Days in the sun and the tempered winds and the air like wine
And you drink and you drink till you're drunk
On the joy of living

You can also create MIDIs from abc files. The software is free. Look in the Mudcat Links for the ABC homepage which will give you links to the programs you neeed to download for your platform (PC/Apple/Unix/other)

midi files can be created with many different music notation programs. an easy and inexpensive one for the PC is Noteworthy Composer. Or many midi's can be downloaded from the web.

I have downloaded the proffered software, for which thanks. The accompanying instructions say "obtain or create the MIDI file by whatever means you can." I am not technically sophisticated. How does one create a MIDI file.

Sorcha - I would say for the present lets just match tunes with lyrics in the DT (where we can). If you want to do more, I doubt if anyone would object. 'cept possibly an anonymous guest

sooooo, you want me to post all 6 tunes and all 5 variants to Willie-O? Mario, you will understand the problem better when your book arrives......

Malcolm - I see your point. (and appreciate it) On the other hand - I'd just like to have tunes to the lyrics! *grin* Tho' it is nice when we can make a positive match between the lyric and the tune. Less variants would help - but we're stuck with the fact that there are probably MORE variations then we can shake a stick at!

We probably would!  None of the versions in volume 2 mention Miss M. Macmath, which is why I asked.  Perhaps she appears in addenda somewhere; I managed to find a (relatively) cheap set in Australia the other day, so I will soon be able to check without traipsing all the way to the library (airmail permitting).  You'll have noticed that I'm quite anxious to make sure that tunes and texts are matched as closely as possible, which is why I'm always asking for more information from people; that's just the way I am...

Malcolm

Malcolm, I honestly don't know, because the tune I posted is the one given by Child himself in the Appendix to Vol. 5. I am not currently in possession of Vol. 2, where Child's versions of 100 are.

Bronson gives 6 tunes, none of which are the one Child gives......but similar to the Group A, 1. tune. (Titled O Will Ye Marry my Daughter Janet--but no lyrics given)

Bronson also gives 5 lyric variants' If we're going to get into all Child variants and all possible/available tunes, I think we would have to start a whole new DT to handle it.......

A clue to the problem with  Arbutus  lies in the attribution: "trad/grater".  Apparantly, this should be [Paddy] Graber, who has taken some bits of Willie O' Winsbury and drastically rewritten the song.  The transformation into a tree business doesn't appear in any of Child's examples, or in any other version that I've ever come across; that, presumably, is entirely Graber's invention.  That being the case, it's also quite likely that he set it to another tune; all the traditional examples I know of (including the one Sorcha quotes) are sung to variants of the same melody, with the fourth line of each verse repeated as a refrain, which would be one reason why the Child melody doesn't fit "Arbutus".  There is an example, collected by Cecil Sharp in the early years of the 20th century, at  Willie O' Winsbury,  though the accompanying text is from elsewhere. Actually, the tune best-known nowadays for Willie was composed for that very set of words by (I think) Andy Irvine in the 1960s; it was almost instantly assumed to be traditional because it was so convincing, and Fairport Convention set  Farewell, Farewell  to it on that assumption.  That tune fits "Arbutus"...

Malcolm

P.S.  Sorcha: which of Child's examples does the tune you posted belong to?

PPS.  MMario: that means that "Farewell Farewell" needs to go back on the "Missing" list, as the "Willie" tune in the DT is the wrong one for it.

1460 THE HARP WITHOUT A CROWN
The DT version says it is from Hugill, but there are minor differences in the words, and one verse (Hugill's #6) missing. The DT entry also says tune Bonny Blue Flag (Low Backed Car) tunefile [BONBLUE, and has been cleared from the missing tunes list. But Hugill himself says:
The tune of the verse is similar to that of the Wearing o' the Green, but the chorus bears a marked resemblance to the American Civil War march The Bonnie Blue Flag.

John,
I've been back through all the missing tune threads to check, and am fairly certain that there is no mention of 'The Stone Outside Dan Murphy's Door' having been posted by anyone at all.
We're all working off Mmario's list and his updates on the threads. If people are posting stuff and not telling Mario, then we're going to get a lot more duplications.

Addendum to John's note: I have tried to find as many of the midi's that were posted to the forum as possible, but I keep finding more. If there is anyone out there who would like to concentrate on searching the forum for midi's feel free to volunteer! Finding one of the "lost" tunes in the forum and positng it's location is a valuable contribution, as it eliminates duplications such as we have found on occassion.

Likewise, I will gladly e-mail out the updated file of "songs without tunes" on request. I update daily at this point.

Congratulations to all those who've contributed so avidly in the last few months. I have a couple of extra points to make here:

I've seen a number of tunes posted that are repeats of previous work done. Sorry Snuffy, but The Stone Outside is a case in point. It's a pity if a labour of love could have been better used on something else. I can't remember if it was Alison or I who did the original posting, but I've only recently discovered that some of my earlier postings don't appear to have made it into the Midis. I'll review MMario's list, but I must admit I forget them fairly quickly after I've worked on them.

I was very interested to read the note about NWC at the top of this thread. I'll need some time to provide a more detailed response. What I will say briefly now is that asking contributors to do the little bit of work up front will (hopefully) save Dick a huge amount of work later on. More of this anon.

Regards, John

Remember that Dick Greenhaus is the only one who has the technical ability to add tunes to the database, and it's a tedious process. He does his best to match the first verse of the lyrics to the tune. It will be a long time before all these tunes can be incorporated into the database - but at least we have them available right here, right now.
Thanks to all for this great work. Keep it coming.

Subject: Please Post Tunes Here -2
From: MMario

for the first thread on this please see thread 23672
Note: We reserve the right to edit or delete messages in this thread, and we may delete tunes once they are available in the Digital Tradition.
There's an effort about to collect tunes for all the Digital Tradition songs. The missing tunes thread (click) has information about tunes that are needed, and about tunes that have been posted in other locations. The Mudcat Cafe has over 23,000 threads posted so far, so we have to take some care to ensure that we don't lose tunes and lyrics that are posted.
  • If you'd like to submit tunes in ABC or MIDITEXT format, please post them in this thread or, preferably, in the thread where the lyrics appear (and post a message here, telling us where the lyrics and tune are). Make sure you put the name of the song in the Subject title of your message in this thread.
  • If you'd like to submit tunes in MIDI format, please send them as e-mail attachments to Alan of Australia at Mudcat MIDIs (click to mail)
  • ***NEW:If you'd like to submit tunes in Noteworthy Composer format, please send them as e-mail attachments to me (Joe Offer) at this link (click to mail). I'll submit the Noteworthy file to the Digital Tradition, and also make sure a MIDI of the file is posted at Mudcat MIDIs. Dick Greenhaus says Noteworthy files are easier for him to work with when he's preparing the Digital Tradition, especially if you have the lyrics set up to match the notes of the tune.
  • If you'd like to send tunes in any other format, please e-mail them to Dick Greenhaus - digitrad@world.std.com. To send lyrics and tunes on that archaic substance known as "paper," click here for information on how to contact the Digital Tradition by mail.
If you e-mail or post tunes, please be sure to tell us where we can find the lyrics (if it's not in the thread where the lyrics appear, give us the DigiTrad filename at the bottom of the lyrics, or the URL of the thread where the lyrics are posted).

I hope that clears up what we need. I'm sure Dick Greenhaus will drop in from time to time to give us further instructions. If you post your tunes here in this thread or send them to Mudcat MIDIs or to Dick, it will make it much easier for us to make use of them. Thanks.
-Joe Offer-
