I'm still looking for the lyrics for "Almost Degraded". This was done by a group called "Cornball Express", though I do recall someone saying this was a name used by the "Buckeroos" doing the recording without Buck Owens. It used to be quite popular on the early Doctor Demento Show.

The number one hit version of Almost Persuaded in the mid 1960s was by singer David Houston. The song was a blockbuster and I saw Houston perform it live in I want to say 1966 in a package show at the Medinah Temple in Chicago that was sponsored by radio station WJJD. I distinctly remember Houston and that this was his hit, not Wynette's. On this show also was Sonny James and the Southern Gentlemen, Jim & Jesse and the Virginia Boys, and a very young Waylon Jennings, whom I just had to meet afterwords and did.

Another great countrysong popular about the same time was "There Goes My Everything" by Jack Greene, former drummer with Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadors who still sings it occassionally on the Opry.

David Houston passed away not too many years ago.

Ben Colder commentary here inspires a little worthy thread-drift here. Anyone who remebers Henson Cargill's country hit "Skip a Rope," a sad song about a dysfunctional family, might appreciate Ben's take on the whole thing: "Mommy and Daddy had a baby last fall/ I guess that they weren't fighting after all..." He also had a take on Conway Twitty's "Fifteen Years Ago," "Fifteen beers ago, and I still feel the same..."

I think the others you're thinking of Mark are "Make the world go away, Take it off of Ben Colder." The other may have been the one to "Still" which was a number one record, but as I recall the parody sold more.

Of course "Almost Persuaded" is a much older song than the Wynette one (written in 1965); there was a tent-meeting hymn that appears in an 1871 hymnal under that name (by Philip Paul Bliss).

And of course the phrase "almost persuaded" is much older than even that, coming as it does from the Book of Acts.

I've heard a spoof, "Almost Degraded", on Dr. Demento. Is that the parody you meant, Spaw?

What was the parody that Ben Colder had on the country charts at about the same time that "Almost Persuaded" was popular? I remember it had Ben sitting down at the girl's table saying "Ben Colder here." She said "Ain't been no colder here than anywhere else."

Is that the same parody?

Yes Spaw, I agree with Murray.....you need to find us those lyrics please!!!
I have just spent two hours searching and have only found recordings and listings but no lyrics. Only lyrics were Purple people eater and Rawhide. I've never heard of Sheb Wooley but he has a web-site that apparently he contributes to himself so will send an e-mail if no-one else knows them.....when the 'Cat is up and running again!
I had to laugh though when I saw Sheb's discography....he wrote a song called Yvonne Calling......

Spaw, you need to post the parody version of this. My first ever gig in Edinburgh was in a pub where the landlady used to get progressively drunker through the course of the evening, and would insist on coming up to my microphone to sing. This song was her piece de resistance. If I close my eyes I can still hear her now .....( and see all the drunks lurching about trying to waltz ....)

I notice you're in a sentimental mood tonight, but this song here always makes me think of the Sheb Wooley parody of it. I wish I could remember the words to it. He became very proficient at doing the paody version of a lot of big country hits. Good song though.........
