Cindy, can you give us a hint as to the words? It's not the Skye Boat Song, is it, beginning "Speed, bonny boat, like a bird on the wing?" If it's that one, you should be able to find it if you click above on the "Lyrics search"

No, I don't think it's the Boat Song, but I am asking for someone else. I'll see if I can find out for sure, and maybe get a lyric snippet.

Stay tuned!!

No lyrics yet, but the recording the song is on is an old one by Calum Kennedy. Some words may be Gaelic. I'll hopefully have more info later.

It isn't the "Skye Boat Song", and the only reference I can find at the moment is to a recording by Kenneth McKellar, if that's any use:  Kenneth McKellar: The Decca Years 1955 & 1975

Here are the partial lyrics to the first verse...

Ah, the rugged misty Isle, the Isle of Skye doth loom, Jagged line of blue, ???? in the twilight gloom, And the water troughs, swift cutting ??? my boat to you, And tonight again 'twil lighten, ?????????

I hope this and the fact it was recorded by Kenneth McKellar will jog soneone's memory.

Thanks!

One source says the author is "Trad/Kennedy-Fraser". Another source gives the title as "Skye Fisher's Song (Tir-Nan-Og)". It's included in The Celtic Fake-Book published by the Hal Leonard Corp.

'High above the cuilin the Isle of Skye doth loom, and I will greet thee' this is a line from a song by Syney MacEwan

The sheet music can be seen in Songs of the Hebrides, Vol. 1 by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser and Kenneth Macleod (London: Boosey & Co., ©1909), page 121:

TIR-NAN-OG: SKYE FISHER'S SONG
Original Gaelic poem by Kenneth Macleod ; melody noted in a fishing boat off the Isle of Eriskay from the singing of Gillespie Macinnes, and fitted with English words and piano accomp. by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser.

Far the rugged misty isle, the Isle of Skye doth show
Jagged line of blue coolins in the ev'ning glow.
Purple water troughs swift cutting clean my boat cleaves through
And tonight again I'll greet thee, mo nighean dubh.

By the glimmer of thine eyes in blackest night I know,
By the light of love that's kindled when my love I'll show,
By the joy that leaps and laughs there like the dancing sea,
By all these I know, mo nighean, thou lovest me.

Nearer now, the misty isle, the Isle of Skye doth loom
And her lights shine softly seaward in the twilight gloom
Like the light of love that travels twixt my heart and thine
And tonight again 'twill light us, O heart of mine.

By the glimmer of thine eyes, I know, I know.

I've made a MIDI of the tune, and I'm sending it in for posting. I'm going to change it from F to G to make it easier for folk instruments.

The MIDI will cover two verses and the coda. The words to the coda are "By the glimmer of thine eyes, I know, I know."

The song has an amazing range - from the G in the bass clef to the high D in the treble.

Thanks, Joe. I think it would make a beautiful piece for wooden flute.
