First heard it on an LP made by Jimmie Rodgers - 'Twilight on the trail' - that I purchased back in 1960, or a year either side.

Folk Music Index also confirms the Stuart/Gilkyson authorship, and lists a recording by Art and Paul on a 1960's Columbia album called Hangin', Drinkin' and Stuff. I know of an Art and Paul who recorded on Columbia in the 1960's, but not the ones that recorded this song.

Thank you! I learned it from a record by the "other" Jimmie Rodgers and he didn't sing the last verse. Never knew anything of its history before although I've been singing it since I think 1957 or 58.

Several sources (including Warner Chappell Music) say GIRL IN THE WOOD was written by Neal Stuart and Terry Gilkyson. It was recorded by Frankie Laine in 1951, and sung by him in the film "Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder" 1952.

From my copy of "900 Miles: The Ballads, Blues, and Folksongs of Cisco Houston" which is an Oak Publication with a 1965 copyright, here are the words to the haunting song you've asked for.

I used to have lyrics to a Cisco Houston song called "The Girl in the Wood"
