Gee, sure is quiet around here. I logged on after a day off for church and goofing off, and find that it appears that only 19 messages were posted on October 8. Somehow, Jeri got on and posted a message at 11:24 AM, and that was the only message posted all day until Mbo started posting at 6:22 PM, followed closely by Katlaughing at 6:35 PM. I also see evidence at Pene Azul has been doing some late-evening housekeeping, getting things humming along again and reviving expired threads.
I had two e-mails from people asking what happened, and wondering what happened to Max. We try to give the poor guy weekends off.
It was a perfect autumn day here in Sacramento. Hope you all had perfect weather and a perfect day, wherever you are.
But we're back in business.

Consider it a short course in reality; every now and then we/they shut Mudcat down long enough for us to see if we still recognize our children; spouses; habitat, see if we can still carry on conversations without wiggling our fingers, you know, a reality check?
And, of course, it is also a test of our level of Mudcat addition. How many times did we each call up the forum today? How many posts did you make to the Trouble and Help Forum? How many fellow Mudcatters did you email?
Some of you may not have been around long enough to remember when it was a rare weekend that the 'Cat did not crash. If you do a forum search, you will find a number of parodies written on the subject, and lots of hand wringing threads.
Welcome home, fellow catters.
Blessings,
Barbara

Well, I'm not online at home so I never Mudcat at the weekends. This weekend I got muddier than a Mudcat cleaning out our pond, mountains of weed and woody waterlily stems removed for composting, about a foot of mud cleared out of the botton together with leaves, beechnut and shells, dead snails etc. Water returned, goldfish returned with more space to swim among the plants, frogs now returning from the shrubbey now they think its safe.
Oh, and on Saturday afternoon a surprise 'phone call from Rick and Heather Fielding. Great to speak to them in person, though my dear wife was a bit bemused by my transatlantic popularity![Tony Hancock:"Friends all over the world, none in this country...."]

Well, I must have tried about every half hour. I was sitting at my pc writing something and checking on the Mudcat is my way of 'having a break'.

But, to be honest, I'm quite grateful. I did manage to get loads of work done!

Just got to work and the first thing I do is to check Mudcat is back on line. What a relief!!!

Cheers all,

Catrin

My home connection is absolutely atrocious, only having a 10% chance of connection. So overjoyed was I, last night, at successfully getting in, that on finding Mudcat closed, I literally couldn't think of anything else to look at, so switched the box off, and played some tunes instead.

Relief!

Whew! I thought it was just me! And here I was, desparate for Catrin to mail me her cookie recipe so I could try to make some for Llanstock!

Hey, Roger. I had a teeny-weeny little pool (or to be posh, water feature) put in this summer. So, what do I do to/with the plants over the winter. I've got an iris, a dwarf bullrush and a miniature water lily ... I'd like to have frogs, but there are a lot of neighbourhood cats (boo hiss) and I understand this is not a happy environment for froggies... Hence no mention of cats in A Frog He Would a Wooing Go, I suppose. (To bring this back to Mudcatty stuff...)

Water feature? What real estate agent made up that term?
I take it this is not a swimming pool or Jacuzzi - but what we in the U.S. might call a "pond," right?

Interestingly enough, I didn't know the 'Cat was down until last evening when I was going to show a friend about HearMe. I had a bad line, so I dropped off pretty quickly there too. Had a nice day with friends though!

Sian,We reduce all the vegetation, especially dead leaves,in the autumn to avoid build up of noxious gases over the winter. Since I've been putting a little barley straw in a bag we get no blanket weed. The goldfish seem to survive OK if you keep an airhole when it freezes over (that rubber ball the neighbours' kids kick over the fence, floated in the pond in the winter, keeps one patch free of ice). The frogs either migrate to the rest of the garden or the mud at the bottom to hibenate. Sometimes they get caught by a late frost after they've come out of hibernation then I get casualties. I've lots of water snails that keep it pretty clean and we net it to keep leaves and herons out.
But despite my increasing weight, I'm no Charlie Dimmock! (We do have a solar powered fountain we put out in the summer to improve airation and use water-butt rather than tap water to fill the pond, chlorine kills to many of the things the beasties feed on.
We've 2 water lilies, irises and marsh marigolds, with astilbe, primroses, lemon thyme,(and other things my wife's planted I can't name) moss and ivy on the stone sides (the last 2 naturalised and have to be kept at bay as they hide all the pebbles we've brought back from holidays)

I assumed, when I checked in early Sunday morning, that since it was Sunday it would be off all day. I played the role of the charming daughter-in-law instead. Went to bed early.

Joe, yes, water feature! I realize that the British gardening programmes don't get major air time over there, but that's THE desired item of garden gear over here. To be said with nose held slightly skyward. I guess you don't understand Charlie Dimmock either. Not a big loss, je vous assure.

Roger, thanks for the info. I've no wild life to tend - yet - so that's not a worry. I am talking very small w.f. here - more a large puddle than anything else. So, I can leave the plants in? It rarely gets *really* cold here ... so we shall see if it ever gets more than a skim of ice. Ah, the changing seasons! Over to the almanac thread, I think ...

I enjoyed the little 'break' too. I found an old short story of mine that I'd been looking for, got down to the inlaws in Waxahachie and got fed real good, got some translation work done, and even had time for a walk hand-in-hand with Dear Hubby down a country road.

But, of course, what was the first thing I did when I woke up too early this morning? stumble, stumble, click of light switch, BUMP - Dang it!, where's that mouse?... ;-)

We ought to get a bit of mileage out of Charlie Dimmock.

Charlie is a lady. She is vastly famous in the UK for appearing on the elctric television WITHOUT FOUNDATION GARMENTS restraining her chesticles. This has appealed to the supposed mass popularity of 'Carry On' type humour in the UK, with lots of references to the 'puppies in a sack' sight of a moderatley pretty girl humping (UK meaning) paving slabs down a garden, fun bags in full swing.

Anyone notice her falling back on the liberty bodice when they did up Nelson Mandela's garden? That's respect!

Now there's NO WAY that the NAmericans are gonna understand THAT reference! And Skipjack, you didn't mention the fact that she always manages to get her T-shirt soaking wet - if not by rain, by some artificials means.

Rog, sian, try not to fill your pond from the tap,Rain water from a butt(UK meaning, a Barrel for collecting Rain) the thing that kills off daphnia and other micro-life is the presence of copper and heavy metals in tap water, to which they are very sensitive, we found this at work when we needed to keep daphnia for biologists. Also clear the pond of debris in the autumn as it generates gases that deoxygenate the water, especially if an ice skin forms, even if incomplete, you get a decrease in the ability of the water to hold oxygen.

Pond tending is in season. Yesterday, alison was the first to alert the musicmail list that Mudcat was down. It has been cold here, and yesterday had warmed up enought to make yardwork comfortable. I moved the pond plants inside to the over-wintering tub.

I cut down the hollyhock stalks and pruned the apricot tree - as Ryan was unloading the apricot branches from the wheelbarrow, a freak accident happened. The tip of a branch whipped around and went directly into his right ear, tearing the eardrum. I heard him screaming from the alley, and it was a trip to the Emergency Room. Painkillers and antibiotics. Hopefully, nothing deeper was injured inside the ear, and nothing permanently damaged. We have to go back and have it checked again today.

Joe...hehehe.
Aside from having enough time to search for various internet sites, I hooked up most of my stereo, which has been sitting in boxes since I moved in. The stuff takes up a lot less space when it's in the boxes, but I've found some nice albums at yard sales, and I can't play them. Still have the speakers to go. I also played outside in the garden, and yanked dead/dying weeds up. Poison ivy turns such a lovely color in autumn!

I had the most fun in my life this weekend. It was great to be free from z-inducing arguments about politics and folksong origins and how religion is a waste. At least there we all believe in the same thing, all love fun, agree on music, don't buy into Spaw's teenage-floozing theories...and you just feel the love in the air, even when we played "Mafia".

Camisu, I stand corrected. But also vindicated in my worry about keeping frogs in the garden. (See Catrin, we did have it music related...!) I'm trying to think if that's the Froggie version that I know. I shall have to give this some thought ...

So, will you be ordering a Charlie Dimmock Calendar for your wall, Joe? Very tasteful!

sian, as long as you have a large-ish planted area around your water feature for the froggies to rest and hide in, they'll be fine. I have a boggy area next to the pond, with Hostas, ferns etc. which provides plenty of moist shelter for the resident amphibians.

The only time our cat came across a frog, the shrieks coming from the 2-inch-long frog brought me running out from the house to find out who was being murdered!! The cat was obviously taken aback too, so don't worry, they can look after themselves!

Frogs have become so rare in our region that I haven't seen one for many years. I don't like being around snakes, and luckily my pond doesn't attract any of them. Birds are the main attraction, as well as our Samoyed, who uses the pond as his water dish. The flowing little waterfall attracts so many kinds of birds, there is a huge chorus outside my back door every morning (see, this IS music related).

FibulaM

At a singing session recently, a young girl of about 10 sang (very well) the rather harrowing Famine song "Skibereen". My partner, a few songs later, remarked how rarely we seem to teach children children's songs anymore - and promptly sang Miss Mouse's Ball! MOst people had never heard it before.

There's something scary about people NOT knowing songs of that ilk, if not that one in particular.

Is there a song about dogs preferring the slimiest water available? Mine will drink out of anything other than his water dish. I've had to leave a bowl outside to get all green and bring that in for him. It isn't a matter of not liking tapwater, 'cause he'll drink that ... as long as the bowl is all ick.

My dog, btw, prefers it when Mudcat is 'down'. He's got a better chance of talking me into playing rag-rag or tickle-tum.

So THAT's what WE did when Mudcat was down. (ta-da: to topic!)

It's a great song and my dear Uncle Metal-Detector (who appears here now and again in various helpful guises) used to sing it for me, and I hadn't heard it in ages, but have since heard it on Len Graham and Pádraigín Ní Uallachain's "When I was young" album.
