I'm looking for lyrics to Give Me Your Hand (Tabhair Dom do Lamh) by Rory Dall O Cathain. I need it for a wedding. If anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it! If you have them, could you e-mail them to me as well as posting to this thread? Thank you very much!! Tara

We are drawing a blank on words to this, although there is a well-known air of the same title by O'Carolan. Can you reference a source at all? Where did you hear/hear of this?

We've got some pretty good resources, and will help if we can.

Tune, by Rory Dall O Cathain, c 1603, is usually found under its title in Latin, "Da Mihi Manum". I've never found reference to any words. A story of its composition is repeated by Nicholas Carolan in the reprint edition (1986) of the Neals' 'A Collection of the Most Celebrated Irish Tunes', c 1724.

I know this tune played by the Chieftains and by Christy Moore. But in both cases it was an instrumental. Are you sure there are any words at all?

Virginia,

The tune commonly attributed to O' Carolan is actually the one by Rory Dall O Cathain. Players of O' Carolan's music tend to play Give Me Your Hand as well, and it is often found in the same sheet music books.

I have never seen any words to it, but that doesn't mean a lot because the majority of my celtic harp music have the music but not the words.

The Wolfe Tones sing a popular version with gaelic and bearla (english) lyrics.

The dates I have for Rory Dall (Ruadhri Dall O'Cathain) are born c. 1590 and died c. 1650. Anyone know where he was from? The closest I have seen is north Antrim.

In the book Tree of Strings is quoted a tale from O'Neill's Memoirs how Ruairi Dall O'Cathain was visiting Scotland. He was in the house of 'Lady Eglintoun' and she demanded a tune, and he stomped off offended. The lady was conciliatory and he composed the tune for her.
The suggested date of the event is 1617. Another source of the same story is 1792 by Denis O Hemsey at the Belfast meeting of harpers.

A pop vocal version was a hit in Ireland sometime in the 70s, can't remember who by, but as you have the lyrics now, it doesn't matter

Also in the book "Tree of Strings [the harp] ["Crann nan teud" in Scottish Gaelic]: a history of the harp in Scotland" by Keith Sanger and Alison Kinnaird, Kinmor Music, 1992: is a warning not to confuse the Irishman "Rory Dall O'Cathain" with the Scotsman "Rory Dall MacMhuirich [Morison or Morrison]", the second being approximately a generation behind the first. According to the book, the Scottish Rory was a great musician but never composed original melodies. (Most of the blind ("dall") harpers lost their sight through smallpox in childhood. At least 7 of the 12 Belfast Festival harpers in 1792 were blind}.

The Irish "Rory Dall" is sometimes, wait for it, credited with composing "The Londonderry Air"!

Roderick Morison (Ruaidhri Mac Mhuirich) was born at Bragar in Lewis around 1656 and died about 1714, probably near Dunvegan in Skye. The standard work is William Matheson's The Blind Harper: The Songs of Roderick Morison and his Music (Scottish Gaelic Texts Society, 1970) -well worth a read if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Alan Stivell does a lovely version on his 70/95 Zoom album. He calls it Rory Dall's Love SOng. Its also on his harpes du nouvel age album. It was on Renaissance of Celtic Harp too as one of the selection of tunes.

Its a beautiful version on harp.
