Subject: Lyr Add: THE CURSE (Larry Groce) From: cnd Date: 27 Apr 20 - 08:44 PM GUEST, your verses here helped me find it! Glad I did find it cause this one's been bugging me. Couldn't find it last time, but with your expanded lyrics, I was able to find it. From the Mudcat thread "Songs that Haunt You" the song is The Curse by Larry Groce (listen) Way back in the hills where the ginseng grows, Back in a hollow where nobody goes, There lives an old man that you never will see. He lives in a hollowed-out sycamore tree. Deer hunters tell of an awful fright, Waking up cold in the middle of the night. Far, far away comes the mournful tune Of the old man's fiddle in the light of the moon. When the man was a lad, so the stories all go, A better fiddler never lifted a bow. Every dance, every party for miles around, Well, they hopped to the tune of his fiddlin' sound. He met a young lady one night in June, Sweeter than the sweetest fiddlin' tune. After the night had passed away, They swore they'd marry on the very next day. Well, the music rang out for the bride and the groom, The fiddle and the bell and the dulcimer too. An old woman stood when the party had done. She said: "Beware of the settin' of the sun." The young man laughed and he took his bride. They went to the hills for their weddin' night. They soon forgot what the woman had said, And when the sun went down, his bride was dead. Way back in the hills where the ginseng grows, Back in the hollows where nobody goes, There lives an old man that you never will see. He lives in a hollowed-out sycamore tree. Deer hunters tell of an awful fright, Waking up cold in the middle of the night. Far, far away comes the mournful tune Of the old man's fiddle in the light of the moon. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old Man's Fiddle? Back in the Woods From: GUEST,Old campfire song Date: 27 Apr 20 - 07:31 PM I just found this question while trying to find out more history on this song. I know it is 20 years late but here are the lyrics to anyone else trying to find this song: Back in the hills where the gensing grows, Back in the hollow where nobody goes, hollowed out sycamore tree, Deer hunters tell of an awful freight, Waking up cold in the middle of the night, Far far away comes the mournful tune, Of the old man's fiddle in the light of the moon, [Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah] There was a young man, as the story goes, A better fiddler never lifted a bow, Every dance, every party, For miles around, Hopped to the tune of his fiddlin' sound, He met a young lady, one night in june, Sweeter than the sweetest fiddlin' tune, After the night had passed away, They swore they'd marry on the very next day, [Nahs chorus here] Well the music rang out, for the bride and groom, Fiddle and bells and dulcimer too, Well an old woman stood when the party was done, She said beware of the setting of the sun, The young man laughed and he took his bride, They went to the hills for their wedding night, Soon forgot what the woman had said, When the sun went down, his bride was dead, [Nahs here] Repeat first verse |
Subject: Lyr Add: WHERE THE GINSENG GROWS (Kevin McClung) From: cnd Date: 07 Mar 20 - 07:27 PM I don't think the song GUEST was after was the one added by Peace. I recently had the chance to listen to "Where the Ginseng Grows" by Kevin McClung and it's not quite it either. I'll share the lyrics here though. As printed in the CDs liner sleeve: WHERE THE GINSENG GROWS (Kevin McClung) Just a feelin' I have Don't ask me to explain Couldn't in a month of Sundays Cleansing as a pouring rain Led me deep into the woods For a wildflower bloom Had me huntin' day and night Howlin' at the moon In the shadow of the laurel 'Neath the moss bed on the hill She kept her heart hidden Better than a moonshine still But true love, I found After years of traispin' round Windin' with the creek on down Where the ginseng grows The glow of the foxfire Shimmered in her hair The smell of sassafras Lingered in the air A sip of that celestial tea And we were lost in space Hitched a ride on a shooting star Disappeared without a trace |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Old Man's Fiddle? Back in the Woods From: GUEST,Audi Date: 13 Oct 00 - 04:02 PM Thanks for the refresh. I may be misleading you to call it a "ballad." It is a fast-paced ghost/lover song with a back-hills flair, but very spooky. I've been stuck on the ner-ner-ner's for days. |

Subject: Old Man's Fiddle? Back in the Woods? From: GUEST Date: 10 Oct 00 - 08:26 PM I'm haunted by an eerie ballad and need the rest of it to be released from it, please. It's about a young woman who dies (in the woods?) and her lover (or father?) haunts the place by playing his fiddle. I believe the setting is Tennessee hills, but can't recall. This much is all I can remember: Back in the woods where the ginseng grows, Back in a holler where nobody goes, There lives an old man that you never will see, Lives in a hollowed-out sycamore tree. Deer hunters tell of an awful fright Wakin' up cold in the middle of the night, From far, far away comes the mournful tune Of the old man's fiddle in the light of the moon. Then a bunch of "ner-ner-ner-ner's" follow to the same tune. |
