Subject: RE: Dick Gaughan 18th OCT BBC Radio 2 From: Jeri Date: 11 Oct 00 - 06:43 PM Go directly to BBC 2 onReal Audio, or The BBC 2 web page. Mike Harding Show's own page. Looks like the show is on from 2000-2100 (8PM-9PM) in the UK. This translates to 3PM to 4PM Mudcat time, unless folks in the UK turn their clocks back before we in the US or anywhere else do. |

Subject: RE: Dick Gaughan 18th OCT BBC Radio 2 From: Sean Belt Date: 13 Oct 00 - 02:55 PM I stumbled across Dick Gaughan playing at a local folk club (good job I didn't fall!) here in St. Louis a couple of weeks ago. Couldn't understand almost anything he sang, but it was beautiful, nonetheless. - Sean |

Subject: RE: Dick Gaughan 18th OCT BBC Radio 2 From: Jeri Date: 13 Oct 00 - 03:13 PM His web page probably can say it better than I can, although it leaves out the hyperbole. Scots singer who also writes songs. Does traditional songs and a lot of newer songs. Fantastic guitar player. Includes a lot of political material, mainly about stupid government tricks, unions, and people coming together. Incredibly powerful performer and nice guy with a sense of humor. |

Subject: RE: Dick Gaughan 18th OCT BBC Radio 2 From: GUEST,Bob Green Date: 14 Oct 00 - 08:58 AM To Bflat His name is pronounced, Gockun the vowels are short and the emphasis is on the Gock, Having said that Dick himself would probably say that me telling you how to pronounce his name was an act of Facist, dictatorial, Imperialist, suppression... and do it in such a way that I agreed with him |
Subject: RE: Dick Gaughan 18th OCT BBC Radio 2 From: GUEST,zuch@ix.netcom.com Date: 14 Oct 00 - 12:23 PM He is, simply put, one of the kindest and most caring people I have ever met. He played in Hartford CT a while back for WWUH (a fine radio station I did the Celtic show for a while back), and I got a chance to talk to him before the show. He likes to sing about _people_. The songs have a story and a moral, and he's not afraid to "say something"; to tell you about more than -- say -- your own inner angst, as some of the current singer-songwriters have a propensity to do. I first ran into his recordings back in the early eighties, and liked them. Then there was a long silence, and as I understand it, he was quite ill during that time. But he's recovered, and is back at it, with even better stuff (one of my newer favourites is the "41st Highlanders' Farewell To Sicily", where he's not only got a good song, but is quite musically innovative). He plays wicked guitar, and uses all kinds of strange tunings (which he's nice enough to tell you about in the album liner notes). Probably the best album of his (IMNSHO) is "Another Kind Of Love Song". _Buy_ it, and check out the title track. Cheers, -- Arne Langsetmo |
