Who sang a song called "My Faithfull friend the tortoise" I heard it in a folk club years ago and I can only remember the chorus.

"He's a faithfull friend the tortoise, who'll love you 'till the end, 'cos you don't need a person with a tortoise as a friend" The words or the title might not be quite right.

Tortoise song used to be sung by Bobby Eaglesham, (Five Hand Reel). He recorded it on an "Xtra" albom in the 70's.

"My Name is Morgan, But it Ain't JP", was recorded many years ago by the Chad Mitchell Trio, and within the last five by Anne Hills and Cindy Magnesen (I think with Tom Paxton) on the CD Precious Memories.
Guests Seth and Dita/john, in general is a good idea to start a new thread when you are looking for a different song and put a key phrase in the thread title. A lot of people tend to skip ones like this with generic names.
Blessings,
Barbara

Well, Guest, if you're at kent.edu, then you know that all of the place names in your version are in the Cleveland, Ohio area, but that's something only us locals would pick up on. Sounds to me like a local parody of the song the other folks are discussing. I'd try asking Jim Bloom, the folk DJ at WKSU (when they've recovered from their fund drive), some old-timer regulars at Brady's Caf (you never know), going to the Arabica coffeehouse in Cleveland (if it's still there; after all, they're mentioned in the song)(I think it;s in the University Circle area), or putting the question to Dr. Demento's website.

Nygil Sade,

The artist was Dermot Somerville

The cassette was "For A Laugh"

1992 Skylark Records SRT-1002

Playlist;

Phil the Fluther's Ball, Sister Josephine, Neil Flaherty's Drake, The Bantam Cock, The Bonny Black Hare, The Train To Morrow, The Portugee's Murder, Drink The Old Jug Dry/General Guiness, The Devil & The Farmer's Wife, A Stitch In Time, The Limerick Rake, The Calabar.

I did a show with him about 8 years ago and bought the tape directly from him. I noticed however, you have a Kent State email name--I met him in Medina Ohio (Just south of Cleveland). Good Luck.

John

The Killdares, a celtic-rock band from Dallas, TX used to perform this song. They also recorded it on their first album called "Killer Keltic".

Reference MY FAITHFULL FRIEND THE TORTOISE. I remember this song being sung by a friend Brian Whitmee from Catterick in North Yorkshire while I was stationed at RAF Leeming (73-77). I have a vague recolection that it was written by Johnny Handle of The High Level Ranters.

Of course, there's also Les Barker's wonderful parody about Myrtle the Turtle, "Will the Turtle be unbroken" to the tune of "Will the circle be unbroken". I think it may be in the DT or lurking in a thread somewhere.

The correct title of the song requested at the beginning of this thread is THE TORTOISE. It was recorded by The Corries and appears on 2 of their albums: "Comedy Collection" (2003) and "Barrett's Privateers" (2007).

Lyrics have been posted at least 3 times at Mudcat:

There was a young lady called Myrtle
Who had an affair with a turtle
The result of her sins,
Was triplets, not twins.
Which proved that the turtle was fertile {And Myrtle!)
