I've seen threads about UK catters' gathering, but they all seem to have been 'down south'and therefore hard to get to for us poor souls in the frozen north. I know there are quite a few of us catters up here in Scotland, so how about a Scottish gathering?

Ian, Real name is Scott Davies, Jock Morris 'cause I'm Scottish and a Morris dancer! Usually to be found at Dunfermline folk club, but occasionally in the Castle Bar Cafe on a Friday evening (very possibly tomorrow night!)and at various festivals throughout Scotland. I play anglo concertina and sing, but not both at the same time. Photo is in the Mudcat resources if you have a strong stomach:-)

Seeing as Wavestar doesn't have a car, how about us meeting in St. Andrews somewhere? Got to be some bar there that wouldn't mind a bunch of folkies. Looking at my diary, first weekend in November looks good; that gives plenty of time to get something organised.

Scott. Yup I was right. I think we may have met briefly at a recording session in Elie, when they were getting the Fife Folk Songs on disc. (Me 6'3" bearded male with cheap Takamine guitar/we spoke about strings in USA/I sang a song about Darien, but it didn't make the album)
Anyway, there's a session on tuesday nights in St Andrews, Wavestar knows all about it, maybe we could take over that?
After further thought, maybe make it a private affair?

The first weekend in November 3rd/4th/5th will be a Music Weekend hosted by the Campsie Folk Club at tHe Kincaid House Hotel, Milton of Campsie, near Glasgow.

At least one night, maybe the Sunday will be an open session. I know that all regular attenders would be happy to see anyone who wanted to come along and have a bash... I'll speak to the "organiser" (ha!) if anyone would like to make more of a Mudcat event of it....

Im sure that all would be welcome...

'Fraid he's rarely seen in Dunfermline these days, but he is still active on the folk scene singing and playing with Kinrick, in a duo with John Blackwood and another duo with Sandra McCleland(?). Think there's also another group he plays with occasionally which includes Bruce Davies. Busy chap!

I'm surprised your name doesn't ring a bell with me as I've been a regular at Dunfermline Folk Club for about 8 years now. Mind you, my memory for names is appalling.

Scott; sorry about the conusion with yourself. It was Bruce davies that I met in Elie.
I'm a regular at Leslie Folk Club and we visited Dunfermline folk club en masse last year, maybe you were there.
I've met Gifford at various venues in Fife.
St Andrews or Glasgow seems fine to me.
Glad to see you're around Wavestar; the session night on Tuesdays are out for me till xmas, I'm doing piping classes till then (to enhance my Jack-of-All-trades/Master-of-None reputation). Weekends are best, when I think about it.
Keep organising, you're doing fine Scott.

Tomorrow (Sunday 15 Nov) evening from about 8:30 pm is the regular Sunday fortnightly session at the Kincaid House Hotel in Milton of Campsie. It's mostly a song-based session, but all instrumentalists also welcome. We have fiddlers, whistle players, bodhran players, mandolins, and a shed load of guitars.

If anyone wants to pop in, we'd be glad to see you...

It'd be great to have a Caledonian Mudcat event...

Great idea! I'm Penicuik based, so any others in the Edinburgh area, please get in touch. Might make St Andrews once in a blue moon, if it becomes regular. Cookin' session this Saturday (21st) and 3rd Sat of month, in the Leadburn Inn, on A701, 15 miles south of Edinburgh, 8pm - camper vans welcome in car park, b&b £20 (haggleable for musos) 01968 672952. The Taybank in Dunkeld is also a must, if you're passing. Last time I passed, I didn't go in, and found out later that I'd missed a Monday afternoon sess with Dougie MacLean, Graham Mulholland, Pete Clark, Leo McCann, and John Morran! It would make an ideal meeting place - it's got a rail station, and £17.50 B&B. 01350 727340. If we can't arrange one place suitable for us all, how about we get together in smaller local groups to start with? There's a Public Meeting on the future of Traditional Arts in Edinburgh/Lothians in the Pleasance Cabaret Bar, Edinburgh on Mon 30th Oct, 6.30 pm. As it turns out that was one of the quietest Sunday evening sessions known to man ( or wummin, come to that), but the crack was good...

Umm that weekend music thing in November will go ahead.. linked with a brewery beer promo, I believe..

There will be sessions over the Saturday and Sunday. Come on all you Eastcoasters - (and Westcoasters come to that...) 4th and 5th November.. all welcome, free admission. Kincaid House Hotel, Milton of Campsie, just up from Kirkintilloch...

Date: Saturday 11th of November ( so as not to clash with Scabby Doug's do) Venue: Wavestar, can you find us a venue in St. Andrews? Failing that, anyone got contact details for the Taybank Inn in Dunkeld? Format: meet after lunch (2pm?), session all afternoon, dine together at some hostelry, session till we drop/get chucked oot of the venue.

Collection from the Taybank possible at chuckin' oot time. Hostel run by musicians Ian and Katy. No number to hand, but they'll have it at the pub. I can't make it to either, until the evening, but I'm sure we'll continue on the Sunday!

Hey guys, this is getting interesting!
Like the idea of a groundswell of interest in the first Caledonian Mudcatters Shindig, but thinking that we may get lost in the general swell of things at the Taybank Hotel. They've usually got somebody performing at weekends and that makes the session part and the accomodation part difficult and expensive. If you can't get a hostel nearby, the Hotels are £35.00 per night.
Also, the Taybank's geography may alienate the mudcatters from Campsie and Dumfries; surely there's something more central?
Also, just a thought; maybe we DONT need to be BIG on our first meeting, just a few little evenings to begin with, to get to know each other before planning an event, per sae. (maybe I'm just being stupit, but slap ma face if you think so!)

I share your concerns about the Taybank; it's only worth doing if we decide to do a whole weekend and manage to get the hostel that MaxTone mentioned. If we just want an afternoon and evening session then St.Andrews (assuming we can find a venue) would be better. Edinburgh would be good from a transport point of view and being central, but finding a good venue might be difficult (the Tass?). Anyone got a big enough house we could all crash at for a weekend, oh and with a good local pub we could use as a venue?

A suggestion for the FIFERS is the Millenium Song Weekend at House of Falkland this Fri/Sat/Sun (20-22/10). Concerts, Medieval stuff, singarounds, workshops, TMSA, seminars on song collections from Howard Glasser (USA based, but collects Scots stuff), and from Emily Lyle (School of Scottish Studies, talking about the Greig Duncan Coll). Don't know who's on the bill, but I'd expect to see Elspeth Cowie, Doris Rougvie, and the Auchtermuchty crowd in attendance. Details from 01337 858367, fax 858348, E-mail [e-mail] Sounds good, but I'll be at Leadburn! Pass the word around. Ian/Scott -- I reckon Dunkeld's easier to get to than St Andrews, from almost anywhere in Scotland, apart from Fife! They don't generally put on stuff on Sat, I think, but the bar gets busy at night. They do have a good room upstairs, though, which we might get to use. Alternatively, basing ourselves at the hostel (see above) might be an idea - I doubt if they're busy, and I can vouch for the atmosphere in both places!

There are other music friendly Country House education centres with cheap (c. £15) B&B at Blairgowrie (Kindrogan Lodge, Kirkmichael), Biggar (Wiston Lodge, Wiston), Dalbeattie (Orchardton House, Auchencairn), for future reference. I'd suggest Edinburgh as the most central to us all, but accommodation's not easy.

Wavestar ---- Any crashing space in St Andrews + venue possible? I won't be able to get up until 8.30 or so, if at all, on the second Sat. Nov., as I'm only kid free alternate W/Es. I'd rather try to make a weekend of it, to make the travelling worthwhile for everybody and make sure we've got cheap crashes (convenient for the pub, or upstairs!) well sorted in advance. But if you want to make the first meet in St Andrews, 11/11 go for it & I'll try to get there. Scott ----Our last set of messages crossed in the post -nothing changes! I'll chip in my pitch as a possible base for a future weekend. 10 miles south of Edinburgh, wing of a 1702 Sir William Bruce mansion, wi' music friendly Laird next door! I can put up 4-6 in the house, if some make do with the floor, plus 3-5 in my camper (heatable!) + tent space for the hardy. Possible extra billeting with other musos on the farm, but there only seem to be about a dozen of us regulars. My old buddy Gordon Menzies of Gaberlunzie might be able to help you with finding a venue . He and Robin have been all over the country for years performing. I dont suppose any of you lot would remember me? 10 years ago, I did a tour of Scotland, places such as the Glenfarg folk club, the Star in Glasgow, the Black Bitch in Linlithgow, and the Ullapool folk club?? Man, would I love to be there for your gathering..

Ack! I haven't been paying attention. I can try and get us a venue, but if I'm not mistaken, I'll be either is Spain or flying back from Spain on the 11th of November. Although I haven't bought my tickets yet, so hmm.. perhaps I could reschedule. In any case, it probably wouold be better to have someone else organising, in case something goes wrong in the last week, and I'm not around!

Max Tone, I live in a small student flat, so I won't have much crash space, but there are dozens of B&Bs in town for not that much. (between 15 and 25 quid).

Even if we can't all make it to the first one, there's no reason why we can't slot a wee tour based round our own local fave sessions/pubs, through the winter/spring, (free/cheap crashes preferred)and we'd all meet each other eventually. We can discuss a more major event for next year when we meet, if we can be bothered. I mailed the Post-Llanstock thread (yeh, I know I must learn Blickies!)and they seem interested. Hell, they only got 18, with 10 times the population of Scotland, so we only need 1.8! Calach - you wanna chase up your BS Edin MC thread(s)from the summer and see if any are still in town/ refresh? Max Tone (Rob)said the Leadburn session is on the Saturday night, which my calendar says is the 18th. So that make the plan 11th in St. Andrews for afternoon session, group meal, evening session and either crash at b&b or head home sober. 18th, evening session at Leadburn followed by crashing at Max Tone's and then a Sunday session?

I'll start a new thread with these dates sometime today, but I've got work to do now:-(

Well your gathering seems to be taking shape and I would like to go but Novemeber is just the wrong time for me. If I were you I would speak to Lainfair as to any tips to havein the gathering etc I say this because The Lainfair Gathering was such a success.
